FAZIL / OASI DELL'AMORE (Fox Film Corp., US 1928)
Dir.: Howard Hawks; cast: Charles Farrell, Greta Nissen, Mae Busch;
35mm, 6800 ft., 76' (24 fps), The Museum of Modern Art. Didascalie in
inglese / English titles.
-DR
Adapted from a French play, L'Insoumise, by Pierre Frondaie (1922),
the film is the story of Prince Fazil, an Arab chieftain, who having
apparently adapted his ways to Western-style sophistication, marries
a Parisienne. Back in the desert, his bride finds her situation very
different, and her efforts to assert her independence and escape from
the role of an Arab subject-wife eventually result in tragedy. The mixture
of racism, opposition of nascent feminism and the Arab's oppression
of women, and the persistent theme of amour fou make this a rather problematic
film, though Hawks on the eve of directing A Girl in Every Port and
The Dawn Patrol tackles it with some confidence. Dark-skinned, moustachio'd
and romantic, Charles Farrell is barely recognisable. Movietone Score
and sound effects: Unfortunately the soundtrack is missing from reels
1 and 2 (the first double reel). The musical arrangement is credited
to S.L.Rothapfel, with the Roxy Orchestra conducted by Erno Rapee. What
remains is the least distinguished of the Movietone scores I have heard,
but does have one or two points of interest: it is apparently the only
surviving score arranged by Rothapfel, who did on occasion do very interesting
musical presentations (cf. Caligari). -DR

THE RIVER PIRATE / GLI AVVOLTOI DELL'HUDSON (Fox Film Corp.,
US 1928)
Dir.: William K. Howard; ph.: Lucien Andriot; cast: Victor McLaglen,
Lois Moran, Nick Stuart, Donald Crisp; 35mm, 6733 ft., 68' (24 fps),
George Eastman House. Didascalie in inglese / English titles.
-DR
Based on a novel by Charles Francis Coe, the story centres on a young
waterfront urchin (Nick Stuart) who is unjustly sentenced to reform
school. There he is befriended by a hardened criminal (McLaglen) who
arranges his escape and endeavours to involve him in warehouse robberies.
The boy however endeavours to go straight and earn the trust of the
daughter of a detective. The plot is interesting: the criminal's friendship
for the boy transcends his own self-interest in wanting the boy as an
associate in crime, so that he finally sacrifices himself to help the
lad go straight. Howard, with the admirable collaboration of Lucien
Andriot, creates a wonderfully atmospheric world of the waterfront and
its buildings, with a dramatically-lit nocturnal boat chase. The performances
notably Donald Crisp as the detective and Victor McLaglen as the amiable
rogue are restrained and modern in style. The Rumanian-born Nick Stuart
(1903 or 1906-1973) as the boy has something of the look of a young
John Garfield. - DR
THE RED DANCE / THE RED DANCER FROM MOSCOW / LA DANZATRICE ROSSA
(Fox Film Corp., US 1928)
Dir.: Raoul Walsh; cast: Charles Farrell, Dolores Del Rio, Ivan Lonow,
Boris Charsky, Dimitri Alexis; 35mm, 8838 ft., 108' (22fps), The Museum
of Modern Art. Didascalie in inglese / English titles.
Reports, ma "there is nothing extraordinary about it. It is not easily
believed by the spectator of average intelligence that a proud Russian
Grand Duke would marry a girl that had sprung up from the working classes."
elementi reazionari dell'armata zarista di assassinare il principe Eugenio;

After the Soviet Revolution, a country girl - now a famous dancer
- is hired by a reactionary clique of the Tzarist army in order to kill
Prince Evgenij. She loves him, though, and will manage to steal his
heart and save his life with the help of a young general. The print
shown here is silent, but the film was also released with a Movietone
system soundtrack. With the help of some Russiam emigrés and Maurice
Tourneur's art director Ben Carré, Raoul Walsh presents a first-rate
work, although the Harrison's Reports argue that "there is nothing extraordinary
about it. It is not easily believed by the spectator of average intelligence
that a proud Russian Grand Duke would marry a girl that had sprung up
from the working classes." Walsh makes no mention of this film in his
autobiography Each Man in His Time, but the subtle acting and the effective
mise en scène make this melodrama a work well worth remembering.

Dir.: John Ford; cast: George O'Brien, Madge Bellamy; 35mm, ???? ft.,

John E. Allen di Cinema Arts, in New Jersey,
A differenza
- rispettivamente come direttore d'orchestra e ballerino - molti anni
prima. -KB-PS
For the Channel Four Silents Presentation we had access to 20th-Century
Fox's safety preservation negative, wich was the European release version
(so the film is dedicated to George Stephenson rather than Abraham Lincoln!).
John E. Allen of Cinema Arts in New Jersey produced a colour print.
Althought we did not trace any original tinting records, it was clear
that some scenes were shot day for night, so the conventional plan of
amber and blue was used. Following his success with The Birth of a Nation,
John Lanchbery was commisioned to write the music. Unlike Birth, this
was an entirely new score, althought it drew upon songs of the period,
as Ford himself was to do in his sound westerns. The Live Cinema premiere
was held to great acclaim at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London in November
1994 a fitting venue, for this was where John Lanchbery and David Gill
had worked as conductor and dancer so many years before. -KB -PS
