Dir.: Larry Trimble; cast: Florence Turner, Maurice Costello; 35mm ,
771 ft., 10' (16fps), National Film and Television Archive. Didascalie
in inglese / English titles.
-DC
Based on the ballad of the same name by Lady Anne Barnard, Auld
Robin Gray tells the sentimental tale of a young Scottish girl forced
to marry an elderly gentleman for financial reasons when her lover is
thought lost at sea. The lover returns to claim his betrothed but discovers
that she intends to remain loyal to her kind yet aged husband. This
film, in its representation of Scottish people as tartan clad country
folk occupying small, inward looking villages isolated from the outside
world and untouched by modernity, is a prime example of the 'kailyard'
discourse, one of the principal modes by which Scotland has historically
been portrayed. Such portrayals can be traced through 19th century Scottish
literature, most notably in the work of J.M. Barrie and Sir Walter Scott,
and 19th century art, and were to feature prominently in filmic representations
of Scotland. -DC
I LOVE A LASSIE: A SIMPLE TALE OF SCOTS FOLK (aka

Dir.: ?; cast: Harry Lauder, Effie Vallance; 35mm, 1409 ft., 20' (20fps),
National Film and Television Archive. Didascalie in inglese / English

intitolato All for the Sake of Mary (o Mack's First Love), su uno scozzese
-DC
Inspired by the legendary Lauder song of the same name. This footage
appeared in Lauder's estate in the early 1970s amongst a collection
of incomplete, unreleased film sequences produced around 1920 and starring
Lauder and Effie Vallance. The majority of the footage seems to have
been intended for a feature film under the title All for the Sake of
Mary (aka Mack's First Love) concerning a Scotsman who travels to South
Africa to seek his fortune in the gold mines. Why Lauder chose to abandon
this venture and suppress the release of the film can at present only
be a matter for speculation. In neither of his published memoirs (1928
and 1931) is there any reference to this earlier film-making activity.

speciali e a viraggi molto efficaci.
-LJ

upon your mind will be just the same." (Harrison's Reports). "This
is a vivid production in which the genius of the manufactures of stage
settings and excellent photography are marked. Is is also an artistic
effort, but, nevertheless, one which we suggest should be seen when

Beatrice Burnham, Wilfred Lucas; 35mm, 5021 ft., 66' (20 fps), The Museum
of Modern Art. Didascalie in inglese / English titles.
Tutto girato in bellissimi scenari naturali e
leggendario cowboy dello schermo: è un fenomeno di costume, molto duraturo;
questi film? Gli Harrison's Reports sostengono che "the material
is good enough to have made an excellent western entertainment, but
poor construction of the plot has killed it; the continuity is so uneven,
and the logic so offended, that one cannot help asking if the person
who wrote the scenario was not an amateur. One cannot lay the blame
on the director, because Mr. Lynn Reynolds is too good a man to have
done this damage." In realtà Riders of the Purple Sage si eleva
"Please take notice: The sequel to this story will be told in the
next Tom Mix picture The Rainbow Trail by Zane Grey. Coming soon to
this theatre." -LJ
One of the best and most celebrated Mix westerns, adapted for the
second time by Fox (the first version starred William Farnum) from the
famous novel by Zane Grey and shot mostly in gorgeous natural exteriors
on a relatively modest budget. Both Variety and The New York Times tried
to be neutral towards the legendary cowboy, acknowledging his status
of a cultural phenomenon. Theaters are filled with kids who would like
to be Mix, with young girls who would like to be his fiancés. What's
the point in dismissing these movies? According to the Harrison's Reports,
"the material is good enough to have made an excellent western
entertainment, but poor construction of the plot has killed it; the
continuity is so uneven, and the logic so offended, that one cannot
help asking if the person who wrote the scenario was not an amateur.
One cannot lay the blame on the director, because Mr. Lynn Reynolds
is too good a man to have done this damage." In fact, Riders of
the Purple Sage is way above the average Tom Mix fare, and should actually
be seen as a classic of the Frontier legend on screen. One of its supporting
characters is Dawn O'Day, one of the four children who performed for
Disney's Alice Comedies series during the same period. Note the title
at the end of the film, "Please take notice: The sequel to this
story will be told in the next Tom Mix picture, The Rainbow Trail by
Zane Grey. Coming soon to this theatre." -LJ

I primi venti minuti esaltano

in un apologo sull'amicizia maschile. Attenzione: lo stesso Wyler appare

If it's not a masterpiece, this rediscovered Wyler falls really short
from being one. The film opens with twenty minutes of breathtaking camerawork
- and eerie echoes of Paul Fejós Lonesome: Barbara Kent in an

drill worker, ending up as an unlikely tale of male bondage. (Check

Topical Budget (see above) held the exclusive rights to the filming
of the 1921 F.A. Cup Final, and made good advantage of the fact. Their
rivals Gaumont Graphic were forced to `pirate' illicit footage of the
event, including awkward shots between heads in the crowd and some shots
of play which are clearly not in the Stamford Bridge stadium. -LM

per mendicare. Chiede un tozzo di pane in un ristorante, glielo rifiutano;
-BBR
Dismissed for chastising his boss after the latter tried to break
up a factory-floor brawl, Tim Noonan cannot find another job and is
reduced to begging. Refused a bite at a restaurant, he steals a sandwich
and runs off, pursued by the restauranteur, who calls in the aid of
a policeman. Tim isolates the policeman, knocks him down, steals his
uniform, and escapes under the noses of his pursuers. An abused wife
approaches the supposed policeman asking him to deal with her drunken
and abusive husband. Reluctantly, Tim arrests the drunkard and takes
him to a police station. He is congratulated, but the superintendent
discovers the fraud. They are soon joined by the angry policeman whose
uniform Tim stole. However, the superintendent sees the funny side,
and takes Tim on as a police recruit. -BBR [DWG Project # 135]

proposta e permettono all'uomo di godersi l'eredità. -BBR

-DE
Using both archival material and clips from classic pics, plus interviews
with relatives of long-dead moguls, this fascinating though sometimes
oversimplified item shows how the American Dream, as proselytized by
Tinseltown, was in fact the creation of a bunch of Jewish immigrants
from Central Europe, some of whom came from towns within a few miles
of one another: Carl Laemmle (founder of Universal) from Germany, Harry
Warner and Sam Goldwyn from Poland, William Fox and Adolph Zukor (Paramount)
from Hungary, and Louis B. Mayer from Russia. -DE
