-LC
The rivalry between the two main characters start among the street gangs, then continue in a submarine during WWI, in a boxing match, and in a final confrontation against drug dealers. "It is full of action, human interest, and keeps the spectator in suspense from the beginning to the end". (Harrison's Reports, September 18, 1925). The John Ford trademark is visible in the flair for military codes, the passion for crowd scenes, the attention paid to supporting characters, the mixture of admiration and comtempt for machismo, and a touch of ironic faith in the pacifying power of the Catholic Church. -LC
HANGMAN'S HOUSE / LA CASA DEL BOIA (Fox Film Corp., US 1928)
Dir.: John Ford; cast: Victor McLaglen, June Collyer, Larry Kent, Earle Fox, Hobart Bosworth; 35mm, 6518 ft., 66' (24 fps), Museum of Modern Art. Didascalie in inglese / English titles.
-DR
One of Ford's last silents, the critics of the day considered the picture a breakthrough in that it used Ireland and the Irish for serious dramatic purposes instead of just for comedy though in fact two years earlier Ford had already declared his lasting love for a somewhat romanticised Ireland (and for Irish horse-racing) in The Shamrock Handicap. In his second film for Ford, Victor McLaglen plays an Irishman who returns home on leave from the French Foreign Legion to avenge a wrong done to his sister by a dastardly villain. Ford's staging and Schneidermann's fine visuals elevate a rather conventional melodrama. The horse-race anticipates The Quiet Man, though Peer Bogdanovich thought this one superior. John Wayne makes his first appearance in a Ford film in this scene, as a spectator who gets so excited he smashes up the picket fencing. Ford told Bogdanovich though, "The only shot I remember is of the Gaelic cross, with the people passing in front of it". At the time Malcolm Stuart Boylan's titles were much admired. -DR

THE CRADLE SNATCHERS / AMANTI PER BURLA (Fox Film Corp., 1927)

At first sight, this may look as the weakest of the four splendid pictures directed by Hawks for Fox and selected for our retrospective. We believe this is a hasty judgement, mostly due to the mediocre condition of the only surviving material; a close look would reveal a whirlwind of slapstick, sexual innuendos among the three married couples, and a wealth of titles filled with double entendre. Fox tried to provide a remake to this feat with Why Leave Home?, directed by Raymond Cannon. We would love to compare the two versions. -LC

ST KILDA, BRITAIN'S LONELIEST ISLE (Topical Productions, UK, ca. 1928)
Dir.: ?; 35mm, 1080 ft., 18' (16fps), Scottish Film & Television Archive. Didascalie in inglese / English titles.
-DC
A promotional film for Macallum-Orme steamship operators. Tourists on a voyage from Glasgow, out through the Hebrides to the remote island group of St Kilda, the most westerly island in Scotland to see for themselves the unique and spartan lives of the Gaelic-speaking inhabitants. Even as the film was being taken, their traditional way of life was already nearing its end. Within two years St Kildans relinquished the struggle and requested evacuation to the mainland. On 29 August 1930 the thirty-six remaining islanders departed, ending a continuity of habitation believed to have spanned 4,000 years. -DC
YOUNG LOCHINVAR (Stoll, UK 1923)
Dir.: W.P. Kellino; cast: Owen Nares, Gladys Jennings; 35mm, 5061 ft., 84' (18fps), National Film and Television Archive. Didascalie in inglese / English titles.
-DC
Based on a story by J. Preston Muddock inspired by Sir Walter Scott's famous romantic ballad, Young Lochinvar presents a tale of Border feuds, treachery and romance set in fifteenth century Scotland featuring stirring battle scenes and enlivened by the antics of Lochinvar's comic grotesque servants. This production was accepted by the trade press Kinematograph Weekly as "a worthy successor" to Kellino's earlier Rob Roy (1922) despite criticism of the poor performance of its leading male character, Owen Nares. A commercial success nevertheless, particularly in northern Britain, Young Lochinvar was presented to audiences with an accompaniment of Scottish music and, where possible, bagpipes. -DC

-TG
Mr. Cullison has responded to a false note telling him to meet his mother-in-law at the train station and left his wife and daughters alone in their large country house. The note was sent by a gang of thieves to draw him out, and they have proceeded to burglarize the villa. The wife and daughters hear unexplained noises and discover the attempt to break into the house. At that very moment, the husband calls to say he has car trouble and learns of their plight. As he speaks to his wife, the burglars cut the telephone wires. Desperate, the husbands enlists the aid of a policeman and, his car still out of commission, commandeers a gypsy wagon for a race to the rescue. Meanwhile, the burglars have broached the doorway and penetrated into the various rooms of the villa, and burst through the doors the wife has barricaded. They clear the last obstacle and are snatching the pearl necklace from Mrs. Cullison's throat when the father arrives with the policeman and the family is saved. -TG [DWG Project # 150]

An invitation to a reception for a foreign prince causes Mrs. Kendrick to need not only a new gown, but a necklace to go with it. A friend lends her a beautiful jewel necklace, and Mrs. Kendrick makes a strong impression at the reception. Returning home, however, she finds the necklace missing, having been stolen by a thief at the banquet. Mortified, the Kendricks buy a duplicate necklace at huge expense, which they can pay only by taking out large loans. Meanwhile, the thief attempting to pawn the necklace discovers it is merely costume jewelry. Unaware of this, the Kendricks both take on extra work in order to repay the loans, which destroys their health. After twenty years of labor they have paid off their debts, but are now too broken in health to work and they contact their friend for aid. WHAT PRICE GLORY? / GLORIA (Fox Film Corp., US 1926)
Dir.: Raoul Walsh; cast: Victor McLaglen, Edmund Lowe, Dolores Del Rio; 35mm, 11085 ft., 135' (22fps), George Eastman House. Didascalie in inglese / English titles.
Le scene di battaglia sono spesso d'un realismo sconvolgente (Kevin Brownlow in The War, The West and the Wilderness rievoca come vennero girate). -DR
The play by Maxwell Anderson and Laurence Stallings had been the major hit of 1924, convincing Hollywood that the time was ripe for films about the Great War. Fox bought the rights in the play, while MGM determined to steal their glory and embarked at speed on The Big Parade, confirming the renewed interest in the war affected film audiences also. The powerful pacifist message of the original play is obscured in the film, which centres on the sexual rivalry and ferocious conflict of Captain Flagg (McLaglen, who stole the role from its original stage creator, Louis Wollheim, whose big chance was to come in All Quiet on the Western Front) and Sergeant Quint (Lowe). Largely thanks to McLaglen's charismatic performance, the film successfully juxtaposes drama, sentiment, potent eroticism and raucous comedy (lip-readers may pick up some pretty strong language for those times). The pathos of the death of the "mother's boy", with the title attributed to him, "Captain Flagg stop the blood!" is masterfully brought off. The battle scenes (see Kevin Brownlow's description of their shooting in The War, The West and the Wilderness) often achieve astonishing realism. -DR

BLACK MASS / MESSE NOIRE (?, D 1928)
35mm, 181 m, 8'(20fps). Collezione Lobster Films/Ripley's Film. Didascalie in francese / French titles.

Dir.: ?; didascalie/titles: Gabriele D'Annunzio, VHS da/from 35mm, l.o.

venne ripresa l'intero episodio. Le cinquanta didascalie del film, di
cui probabile esecutore fu Luca Comerio, vennero composte direttamente
da D'Annunzio. Presentato in censura, vi furono perplessità proprio
-VM
The Fiume affair was documented in a feature length film, Il paradiso
nell'ombra delle spade (Paradise in the shadow of the swords), produced
by the Cinema Section of the Fiume Command for Monopolio Internazionale,
which recorded the entire episode. The fifty titles of the film, which
was probably executed by Luca Comerio, were no doubt directly composed
by D'Annunzio. It was precisely these titles which presented problems
when the film was submitted to the censors, which considered them dangerous.
The film was not allowed to be shown until June 1921, and then only
after the suppression of certain scenes and related scrolls. The omitted
elements included those which made reference to the daring, with appropriate
and persistent waving of daggers and above all the finale in which "the
soldier-poet, fired by his holy passion, asks the legionaries of Fiume
and the city of Fiume to resist the application of the treaty which
does not recognise the regency". -VM
NON E' RESURREZIONE SENZA MORTE (Sangro Film, I 1922)
Dir.: Eduardo Bencivenga; sc.: Vladimir D. Popovic; cast: Elena Sangro,
Carlo Gualandri, Ratimir V. Popovic; Betacam SP, 30', Jugoslovenska
Kinoteka / Cineteca del Friuli / Collezione Attilio Giovannini. Didascalie
in italiano / Italian titles.
governo montenegrino in esilio in Italia.

The feature film Non è resurrezione senza morte (There's No Resurrection
Without Death, 2,050 m.), dealing with a Montenegrin subject, was produced
in Italy in 1922, on the initiative and based on a script of Vladimir
D. Popovic, a lawyer from Cetinje (old capital of Montenegro) and President
of the Committee of Montenegrin Refugees and the Minister of Justice
(to the year 1922) in the last Montenegrin government in exile in Italy.
The film was produced by Sangro Film, the studio owned by the renowned
Italian silent star Elena Sangro, who has the leading part in it. The
film was meant to bring out the role and merits of Montenegro in World
War I and consequently contribute to "amending the allied-imposed injustice
against Montenegro and the Petrovic Dynasty", and influence the change
of the decision to unite Montenegro with Serbia. The Italian poet Gabriele
D'Annunzio collaborated on the final version of the script and engaged
himself in other work preceding the shooting. A large number of Montenegrins
exiles also took part in the film playing smaller roles or acting as
extra, thus, in their authentic costumes, recreating vividly theatmosphere
of Montenegro. -DK
