PROGETTO GRIFFITH II: GENNAIO-GIUGNO 1909
THE GRIFFITH PROJECT II: JANUARY TO JUNE, 1909
Programma 1
THOSE AWFUL HATS (Biograph, US, 11/12 Jan 1909)
Dir.: D.W. Griffith; cast: Flora Finch, Linda Arvidson, Mack Sennett; 35mm, 172 ft., 3' (16 fps), The Museum of Modern Art. Didascalie mancanti / Missing titles.
-KT
A film is being projected in a typical small theater. Ladies with large hats, one escorted by a disruptive, comic man in a checked suit, enter and find seats. Spectators seated behind these ladies plead with them to remove their hats, and a huge mechanized scoop descends, first plucking a hat up out of sight and then lifting a lady along with her hat. -KT [DWG Project # 97]

THE BRAHMA DIAMOND (Biograph, US, 14/19 Jan 1909)
Dir.: D.W. Griffith; cast: Harry Solter, George Gebhardt, Florence Lawrence; 35mm, 476 ft. (incompleto/incomplete), 8' (16 fps), Library of Congress. Didascalie mancanti / Missing titles.
-KT
The extant scenes include the early one in which the tourist visits the temple and sees the "Light of the World" diamond in the Brahma idol. The next shot apparently shows the changing of the temple guard for the night. Scenes set up the heroine's home and the tourist's intrusion to force her to participate in his plot to steal the diamond. Much later, the guard visits the hotel, becomes employed as a servant, and vainly searches for the diamond, which the villain has sewn into a valise handle. Shots of the heroine in jail are intercut with a scene in which the guard regains the diamond by mystical means as the tourist tries to sell it to a dealer. The guard returns just in time to save the heroine from execution. -KT [DWG Project # 99]

CACCIA ALLA FOX / FOX - THE SEARCH
7TH HEAVEN / SETTIMO CIELO (Film Fox Corp., US 1927)
Dir.: Frank Borzage; cast: Charles Farrell, Janet Gaynor; 35mm, 10807 ft., 120' (24fps), La Cinémathèque française. Didascalie in inglese / English titles.
-DR
Frank Borzage transmuted the kitsch melodrama of Austin Strong's 1922 stage success into one of the most exquisite poetic creations - thanks to "the archetypal simplification and the universality of silent cinema" (Hervé Dumont). Significant to this achievement was the magical visual texture attained through Ernest Palmer's photography, Harry Oliver's production design, and perhaps the influence of F.W.Murnau, then also working at Fox. Jean Mitry found in the film "some of the most beautiful scenes in the cinema"; while for the surrealists the climactic, supernatural triumph of love in the thrilling finale was the ultimate expression of "amour fou". 21-year-old Charles Farrell and 20-year-old Janet Gaynor, as the sewerman and the orphan who find a private heaven in their Parisian attic, remain the most enchanting of the cinema's romantic couples. The musical score is by Hungarian-born Erno Rapee (1891-1945), who had come from Berlin's UFA-Palast to head the Roxy Theatre Symphony Orchestra, which recorded the surviving Movietone track. Modern spectators, for whom the Rapee-Lew Pollack theme "Diane", persistently repeated on the track, has become too familiar and hackneyed, must make the effort to imagine the effect upon audiences of 1927, hearing this haunting romantic melody for the first time. -DR

EISENSTEIN COMPIE CENT'ANNI
EISENSTEIN: A CENTENNIAL TRIBUTE
STACHKA / SCIOPERO (Goskino, USSR 1925)
Dir.: Sergei Eisenstein; cast: Aleksander Antonov, Grigorij Aleksandrov; 35mm, 6351 ft., 95' (18 fps), Gosfilmofond of Russia / George Eastman House. Didascalie in russo e in inglese / Russian and English titles.
-PCU
The texture and detail of this brand new, full-aperture print - directly struck from the Gosfilmofond's archival negative, and with a somehow different editing from the release prints currentlyu available - brings back to life Eisenstein's feature debut. Its freshness of invention and enthusiasm for stylistic discovery is matched by the Alloy Orchestra with its unique blend of melody and concrete sounds, an ideal follow-up to the 1995 smash hit score for the Man With the Movie Camera. The event is co-produced by Pordenone with our longtime partner, the Telluride Film Festival. -PCU

CACCIA ALLA FOX / FOX - THE QUEST
THE SHAMROCK HANDICAP (Fox Film Corp., US 1926)
Dir.: John Ford; cast: Janet Gaynor, Leslie Fenton, J. Farrel McDonald; 35mm, 5685 ft., 72' (21 fps), The Museum of Modern Art. Didascalie in inglese / English titles.
Here is much of [Ford's] fifties compositional style, painterly, spacious and balanced, deep in field. Here a large cast and wealth of inventive incident create breezy pacing (where earlier Foxes meander). Stratifications of class (Irish, black, Wasp, Jew, doctor, etc.) function not solely as themes but as motifs to be juggled playfully. Typically for Ford, downbeat material receives comic treatment, and humor has a wacky quality uniquely his: a doctor tells laid-up Neil he's done what he could, then walks out with a golf bag on is shoulder; jockeys bring flowers "got cheap at the undertakers"; Finch shrugs off adversity by biting a banana. Contemporaries cheered the Kildare marketplace, wich comes alive midst ruins, dusty roads, barefoot boys in maxi-skirts and jackets, children carrying geese and sheep, donkey carts, jigging couples, and a "corker" of a steeplechase. -Tag Gallagher, John Ford: The Man and His Films.
