PRIDE OF THE CLAN / LA FIGLIA DELLA SCOZIA (Artcraft, US 1917)
Dir.: Maurice Tourneur; cast: Mary Pickford, Matt Moore, Warren Cooke;
16mm, 2075 ft., 70' (18fps), Cineteca del Friuli. Didascalie in inglese
/ English titles.
paesaggisti come Caspar David Friedrich, John Martin e J. W. M. Turner.
-PC
Pickford gives a strong sombre performance in the rather pedestrian
story The Pride of the Clan a tale of a young fisherman and a clan chieftain's
daughter set within a rocky northwestern Scottish fishing community
and its culture brings a personal conviction to the changes of class
distinction betwen her and her lover demanded by the story, making it
more drammatically convincing than it has any right to be. Director
Tourneur (and his art director Ben Carré) used carefully-arrsanged interiors
and naturally landscapes to create a special, stylised world, which,
through John van den Broek's magnificent photography, shows marked affinities
with both the genre scenes of 17th century Dutch masters such Frans
Hals and Jan Steen, and the landscape artists such as Caspar David Friedrich,
John Martin and J.W.M. Turner. -PC

sotto grandi pannelli pubblicitari assomiglia in modo impressionante
maltese. -DR
This stylish gangster picture looks firmly forward to the early sound
masterpieces of the genre: the shooting-down of the gentleman-gangster
protagonist, "Mile-Away Barry", beside giant poster-hoardings, has a
quite startling resemblance to the end of Little Caesar. Mary Astor's
performance her first in a gangster film as the enigmatic young beauty
who ingratiates herself with the gang, her true motives only gradually
being revealed, also anticipates aspects of her later career including
The Maltese Falcon. -DR

architetture veneziane, tendaggi, nani e piccoli schiavi negri, e un
tocco macabro e misterioso nelle repliche del mago e nell'ombra sinistra

in the manner of the impressionist German films, with unexpected angles
on the picturesque Venetian architecture, draped curtains, dwarfs and
little negro slaves, and with a touch of the macabre and mysterious
in the magician's retorts and the sinister shadow of his hand weaving
spells over the beautiful face of the sleeping hero". The "sleeping

che lui li butta dalla finestra. Lei crede che li abbia mangiati tutti;
I letali biscotti causano l'indigestione agli attori; a casa Jones,
poliziotto. -SS
Mrs. Jones bakes for her husband a batch of biscuits, which prove
so inedible that he tosses most of them out the window. Seeing how many
he has apparently eaten, Mrs. Jones is flattered and brings more to
his theatrical booking office. Indigestion caused by "the pernicious
pabulum" fells actors in the office and, back home, an iceman, a burglar,
and a policeman. -SS [DWG Project # 138]

A young couple's romance is thwarted by the violent disapproval of
the woman's father, who breaks a free-standing mirror by swinging his
cane at the persistent suitor. Before the father can ship his daughter
off to Europe, the suitor follows the guardian aunt to a department
store and buys an identical traveling outfit. Caught in his disguise,
he stands in the now-empty mirror frame and convinces the woman that
he is her image. The father sends his daughter off with the fake aunty
and the two are married before the family untangles the deception.

Dir.: D.W. Griffith; cast: Herbert Prior, Mary Pickford, Owen Moore;

stanza. -SS
Filippo, a "cripple" but the best young violin craftsman in old Cremona,
pines secretly for his master's daughter, Giannina, but she and another
apprentice, Sandro, have eyes only for each other. In the city contest
for the best violin, the autocratic ruler adds the additional prize
of Giannina's hand in marriage. Filippo contrives a self-sacrificing
ruse by secretly exchanging his superior violin for Sandro's, but then
the desperate Sandro undoes the sacrifice by stealing back what he mistakenly
assumes is Filippo's violin. When Filippo wins the contest, he sees
Giannina's repulsion and smashes his violin, handing over his prizes
to Sandro and retreating to his room alone. -SS [DWG Project # 141]
