RIVALINDER [FEMALE RIVALS / LE RIVALI]
(Nordisk, DK 1906)
Dir.: Viggo Larsen?; cast: ?; 35mm, 98m, 5’ (16fps), Norsk Filminstitutt. Didascalie in tedesco / German titles.
-BB
Rivalinder is, at the time of writing, the oldest Nordisk fiction film that has survived. A man meets his mistress, and they are both observed by the gossip; she hurries to the man’s wife and tells her what she saw. With the help of the gossip the wife challenges the mistress to a duel. The man is informed about the duel by a letter from his wife. When he arrives at the duel, the mistress has just killed his wife. In despair he rejects his mistress who then shoots him down in cold blood before shooting herself. Three deaths within a minute! Strong stuff indeed! -BB

FALLITEN [THE BANKRUPTCY / IL FALLIMENTO]
(Nordisk, DK 1907)

Dir.: Viggo Larsen; cast: ?; 35mm, 87m, 5’ (18fps), Norsk Filminstitutt. Didascalie in danese / Danish titles.
-BB
By the discovery last year in Norway of both this film, released in January 1907, and
Rivalinder, the amount of surviving fiction films from Nordisk’s first production year 1906 was suddenly doubled. A clerk courts a shipowner’s daughter but is rejected. She and her intended, an officer, laugh at the poor clerk. The shipowner, having lost his ship and cargo, suddenly pulls out a gun and tries to commit suicide but is saved in the nick of time by the clerk. The officer, not wanting to marry a pauper, breaks off his engagement to the daughter. We then see a family idyll a year or two later: the clerk and the shipowner are now the proprietors of a grocery store; the clerk and the daughter are married and they have a child. -BB

DRENGEN MED DEN SJETTE SANS [THE BOY WITH A SIXTH SENSE
/ IL RAGAZZO CON UN SESTO SENSO] (Nordisk, DK 1907).

Dir.: Viggo Larsen; 35mm, ca. 100m, 5’ (18fps), Swedish Television Archive. Senza didascalie / No titles.
Uno strano, piccolo film recentemente ritrovato presso l’archivio televisivo svedese. -CT
Recently rediscovered at the Swedish Television Archive. An odd little film; the first shot of the print has nothing to do with the rest and probably comes from another film altogether. The rest is a story of a little girl who wanders off in the woods and gets herself lost; her parents must race to find her before a brutish tramp can harm her. They find her with the help of a young boy who happens to pass their house, and who fortuitously (!) has psychic abilities. His clairvoyant visions are shown with a white iris around the image.

ROSEN / [THE ROSE
/ LA ROSA] (aka FRA ROKOKOTIDEN / [FROM THE ROCOCO PERIOD / IN EPOCA ROCOCÒ) (Nordisk, DK 1907).

Dir.: Viggo Larsen; 35mm, ca. 100m, 5’ (18fps), Swedish Television Archive. Didascalie in tedesco / German titles.
-CT
Recently rediscovered at the Swedish Television Archive. This little costume piece tells a simple story of a young nobleman who wins the hand of his lady love even though her father wants her to marry a wealthy but aging and unshapely suitor. The film was largely shot on location at Frederiksborg Castle north of Copenhagen and makes good use of the castle and its gardens as background. The film’s titles were printed from flashes in the print and are probably original German-market title cards.

JE’ SKU’ TALE MED JØR’NSEN / [I’M HERE TO SEE JØRGENSEN
/ SONO VENUTO A TROVARE JØRGENSEN] (Nordisk, DK 1916)

Dir.: Lau Lauritzen; sc.: Kaj Allen; ph.: Hugo J. Fischer; cast: Rasmus Christiansen, Charles Willumsen, 35mm, 407m, 20’ (18fps), Det Danske Filmmuseum. Didascalie in danese / Danish titles.
-CT
Lau Lauritzen made something like 200 short farces for Nordisk in the years from 1914 to 1919, gathering a team of popular comics and providing the company with a steady string of popular films. The heroes of this one are tram-rail-honers (keeping the tracks for the streetcars smooth and even). One of them gets the D.T.s and is put in the loony bin; his partner goes looking for him. A cruel but hilarious farce, with the wonderful Rasmus Christiansen, who also appears as Uriah Heep in
David Copperfield. -CT

FOLKETS VEN / [A FRIEND OF THE PEOPLE / UN AMICO DEL POPOLO]
(Nordisk, DK 1918)

Dir.: Holger-Madsen; sc.: Sophus Michaëlis; ph.: Louis Larsen; cast: Gunnar Toln s, Lilly Jacobson, Frederik Jacobsen, Svend Kornbeck, Holger-Madsen, Clara Schønfeldt, Carl Laurizen, Adolf Jensen; 35mm, 2100m (orig.: 1677m), 101’ (16fps), Det Danske Filmmuseum. Didascalie in danese / Danish titles.
-CT
A political drama about three brothers named Kamper ("Struggler"): the handsome Ernst (Gunnar Tolnæs) is a printer and strives for social justice through democratic means; the broad-shouldered, impetuous steel-worker Waldo (Svend Kornbech) means to smash the established social order; and the hunchbacked watchmaker Kurt (Holger-Madsen himself) is given to overblown, deluded speculation. Ernst embarks on a career in politics and distances himself from Waldo’s revolutionary agitation. The unbalanced Kurt attempts to assassinate the reactionary prime minister, and Waldo is outraged when Ernst hands him over to the police. He gets even more furious when Ernst falls in love with the prime minister’s daughter Irene (Lilly Jacobsson) and marries her in defiance of her father’s objections. While Ernst makes an impassioned plea for gradual reform and social improvement, the revolutionaries turn to violence; but in the end, they come to recognize its futility.
When this film was made, there was a great deal of worry that the Bolshevik revolution would spread from Russia to the rest of Europe, and
Folkets Ven was conceived as a response to the rising tide of revolutionary extremism. Ole Olsen, the general director of Nordisk Film, was credited as co-author of the screenplay, putting the full weight of his own and his company’s prestige behind the film.
Folkets Ven is a truly remarkable film: it engages directly with highly topical political issues in a big-budget commercial production, and it manages to make moderate, democratic politics exciting and appealing. At the same time, it does not demonize the revolutionaries in the way it happens in other films from the same, turbulent period. The splendid cinematography and intelligent use of locations add to its force. A number of leading Social Democrats saw Ernst as a portrait of themselves, and the German Social Democratic party used the film for propaganda screenings. -CT

MOD LYSET / [TOWARDS THE LIGHT / VERSO LA LUCE]
(Nordisk, DK 1918)

Dir., sc.: Holger-Madsen; cast: Asta Nielsen, Augusta Blad, Anton de Vardiar, Lilly Jacobsson, Alf Blütocher, Frederik Jacobsen, Charles Willumsen, Elith Pio, Harry Komdrup, Nikolai Neiiendam, Hans Dymsesen; 35mm, 1250m (orig.: 1445m), 68’ (16fps), Det Danske Filmmuseum. Didascalie in danese / Danish titles.
-CT
Asta Nielsen plays an alluring and coquettish society lady who marries for love, only to be instantly and tragically disappointed. She subsequently becomes infatuated with a saintly slum evangelist. She tries to tempt him, but he resists her, and she ends up converting and becoming a white-gowned evangelist herself.
A film of many striking effects, particularly in its use of symbolic inserts, which may perhaps seem somewhat overdone at times (the temptation scene is intercut with shots of Christ tempted by Satan), but are nevertheless fascinating to see. It is highly entertaining, with a spectacular fire that ravages the evangelist’s island colony. One can look at it as a late example of the type of film that had been the mainstay of the production company Nordisk Film before and during World War I: technically polished, passionate melodramas, set in an unspecified, "international" upper-class world.
The director Holger-Madsen’s visual sense much in evidence. His name was originally plain Holger Madsen, but he changed when he became an actor, earning him the affectionate nickname of Holger Hyphen. He was a celebrated character actor, with a particular gift for elaborate makeup, before becoming a film director, making a number of notable films like
Evangeliemandens Liv and Himmelskibet. He moved to Germany when a severe post-war downturn hit the Danish film industry, but was confined to making routine pictures there. Much more successful in Germany was Asta Nielsen, of course. Mod Lyset is the only film that she made in her native Denmark apart from three pictures in 1910-11, at the very beginning of her career. Otherwise, she did all her work in Germany, where she was acclaimed and revered in a way she never was in Denmark, where many took a rather lukewarm view of her. She was forced by circumstances to work once more in Denmark; apparently, she was denied re-entry into Germany after visiting her family in Denmark, because she was (absurdly) suspected of being a spy. She made Mod Lyset in late 1918, but returned to Germany as soon as she could. -CT

VŒDDELØBEREN / [THE RACER
/ IL CORRIDORE] (Nordisk, DK, 1919)

Dir., sc.: Lau Lauritzen; ph.: Hugo J. Fischer; cast: Carl Schenstrom, Aage Bendixen, Ellen Timm, Lauritz Olsen, Kate Fabian, Bruno Tyron; 35mm, 333m, 16’ (18fps), Det Danske Filmmuseum. Didascalie in danese / Danish titles.
-CT
An atheletics-crazed father wants his daughter to marry a champion long-distance runner, but the girl has other ideas: she wants to marry a diminutive barber. In the end, a foot-race will decide who gets the girl. This excellent Lauritzen farce features the two comedians who would soon be paired in Tyvepak as Fy & Bi (that is, Pat & Patachon): the gangly Carl Schenstrøm as the running champion and the nimble Aage Bendixen as the girl’s favourite.

TYVEPAK / LOVE AND BURGLARS
[LA GANGA DEI LADRI] (Palladium, DK 1921)

Dir., sc.: Lau Lauritzen; cast: Aage Bendixen, Carl Schenstrøm, Axel Hultman, Olga Svendsen; ph.: Hugo J. Fisher; 35mm, 611m, 30’ (18fps), Det Danske Filmmuseum. Didascalie in inglese / English titles.
-CT
The first film with the comic duo Fyrt¬rnet & Bivognen, "Lighthouse & Sidecar," or Fy & Bi for short; outside Denmark, they were most widely known as Pat and Patachon. This one has a different Patachon, Aage Bendixen - for the next film, he was replaced with Harald Madsen, who kept the role. Pat and Patachon here occupy their characteristic roles as tramps with hearts of gold who help a pair of young lovers. Soon after Harald Madsen took over the role, the duo became immensely popular, especially in Central Europe. Re-edited, sound-dubbed versions of their films continued to be shown in German cinemas well into the 1960s, and their tremendous popularity has unfortunately meant that very few of the pair’s early films are still extant in something resembling an original version. -

DAVID COPPERFIELD
(Nordisk, DK 1922),

Dir.: Anders Wilhelm Sandberg; sc.: Laurids Skands, da / from Charles Dickens; ph.: Louis Larsen, Christen Jørgensen; des.: Carlo Jacobsen; cast: Martin Herzberg, Gorm Schmidt, Karina Bell, Karen Winther, Paul Reumert, Else Nielsen, Rasmus Christiansen, Frederic jensen, Anna Maria Wiehe, Peter Malberg, Marie Dinesen, Charles Wilken, Margarethe Schlegel, Daren Caspersen, Robert Schmidt, Ellen Rovsing; 35mm, 2425m (orig.: 3180m), 117’ (18fps), Det Danske Filmmuseum. Didascalie in danese / Danish titles.
-LC
A.W. Sandberg had been one of the very first Danish photo-journalists. He worked as an extra on Benjamin Christensen’s
Det hemmelighedsfulde X (1914) and was soon after hired as a director at Nordisk, where he became head of production in 1922. His strategy for winning back the international market the company lost during and after World War I was a series of ambitious, high-budget literary adaptations, mostly based on the novels of Charles Dickens. David Copperfield is probably the best of these lovingly mounted films, all with wonderful sets by Carlo Jacobsen and beautiful photography. The editing and staging is simple, even slightly old-fashioned; Sandberg’s efforts were particularly concentrated on bringing to life the many peculiar characters that populate the novels. Poul Reumert, who played the dashing gaucho in Asta Nielsen’s breakthrough film Afgrunden / The Abyss (1910), appears here as Wickfield; but the most striking performance is that of the popular musical theater star Frederik Jensen as Mr Micawber, which bears a fascinating similarity to W.C. Field’s thirteen years later. Unfortunately, the Dickens films never became big hits abroad, even though they were hugely successful in Denmark and gathered high praise wherever they were shown for their craftsmanship and taste. -CT

We are aware of a lot of adaptations - good or bad, silent or talking - of Dickens’ novels, but none better than this one, we believe, has so successfully revived the animus of the writer, mirroring the stylistic brightness of David Copperfield’s alter ego. -LC

KAN KVINDER FEJLE?
[CAN WOMEN MAKE AN ERROR / POSSONO SBAGLIARE LE DONNE?] (Nordisk, DK 1924),

Dir.: Anders Wilhelm Sandberg; sc.: Sam Ask; ph.: Louis Larsen, Christen Jørgensen; cast: Karina Bell, Peter Malberg, Knud Almar, Martin Harzberg, Viggo Wiehe, Xenia Schrøder, Kate Fabian; 35mm, 1834m (orig.: 2219m), 80’ (20fps), Det Danske Filmmuseum. Didascalie in danese / Danish titles.
-CT
A charming comedy, contrasting the wintry cold of Scandinavia with the romantic warmth of Italy. A young lady of Denmark, her head filled with romantic (and absurdly grandiose) visions of the tomb of Romeo and Juliet by an unscrupulous artist, elopes to Italy. A young engineer, who has fallen in love with the young lady and is (rightly) worried about the motives of the artist, follows after her. The engineer organizes an elaborate charade to convince her that the artist is far from reliable, involving the Brotherhood of the Black Hand, the Isle of the Dead from Arnold Bñcklin’s famous painting (which she firmly believes is a real place), and other bits of Never-Never Italy. Sandberg made a number of smaller, light-hearted films between his big literary pictures; in this one, he pokes gentle fun at the Northerners’ stereotyped ideas about the sun-drenched, romantic South, even if he to some extent yields to them himself, deftly constructing a vision of an imaginary Italy using location sequences shot on the Italian Riviera, the Lake District, and Verona. (It should be said that the real Denmark is usually not as cold and wintry as it appears here, either).
The versatile Peter Malberg here gets a chance to play a romantic hero; in
David Copperfield, he appears as the eccentric Dick, and in other films from the period, he plays everything from drooling imbeciles to dastardly handsome villains. In Denmark, oddly, he is today remembered chiefly for the many lovable old codgers he played in the rustic comedies of the 1950s. Sam Ask, a Swedish screenwriter and theatre personality, wrote the script and also has a small role as an innkeeper. -CT

FRA PIAZZA DEL POPOLO / MISTS OF THE PAST [DA PIAZZA DEL POPOLO]
(Nordisk, DK 1925)

Dir.: Anders Wilhelm Sandberg; sc.: Sam Ask; ph.: Louis Larsen, Christen Jørgensen; des.: Carlo Jacobsen; cast: Olaf Fønss, Karina Bell, Karen Casperson, Einar Hansson, Robert Schmidt, Carston Wodschow, Henny Geermann, Philip Bech, Egill Rostrup, Torben Meyer, Peter Bielsen, Aage Bendixen, Henry Seemann, Lillian Jînefeldt; 35mm, 2158m (orig.: 3305m), 105’ (20fps), Det Danske Filmmuseum. Didascalie in inglese / English titles.
-CT
This film was based on a novel from 1866 by Vilhelm Bergsøe, which, although seldom read today, was regarded as the most popular Danish novel ever even into the late 1940s. Its background is the Danish artists’ colony in Rome in the 1820s and 1850s. While the film discards the novel’s intricate structure of embedded tales and recounts the main plot chronologically instead, the story remains quite complicated. A prologue introduces a talented young sculptor, Malm (Olaf Fønss), who apparently perishes in a great flood when a tidal wave crashes down the Tiber. The story then jumps ahead twenty-five years, to follow Malm’s illegitimate son Henry. His desire to marry a beautiful young lady (Karina Bell) is thwarted by the machinations of the unscrupulous d’Acosta (Robert Schmidt), who covets the girl himself. Some years later, in Rome, Henry and his love meet again. D’Acosta tries to dispose of his rival, but thanks to the help of a resourceful chambermaid (Karen Caspersen) and the doughty monk Father Ambrosio (Fønss), everything is put to right at the end.
Certainly the most spectacular of Nordisk’s literary adaptations, with an impressive flood scene (done in miniature), a Roman carnival recreated on the Nordisk backlot in Copenhagen, and ravishing location footage from the Roman campagna. The film is breathtakingly photographed, with a number of scenes reproducing famous 19th-century paintings. The numerous references to 19th-century Danish artists of course meant little to foreign audiences, and the film was shortened slightly for export. The film was also retitled -
Mists of the Past for the English market, La loi d’amour for the French - since Bergsøe’s novel was not known outside Denmark. It is this export version which will be shown here, copied from an original tinted nitrate print.
Despite the care lavished on the production and the presence of Olaf Fønss, who played the leading role in
Atlantis (1913) and subesquently became a major star in German films, Fra Piazza del Popolo did not become the resounding success Nordisk had hoped for. Sandberg’s expensive literary adaptations had not been profitable, and he left Nordisk and Denmark behind in 1927 to work in Germany and France. -CT

-CT
On the west coast of Jutland lives old Malin (Petrine Sonne) and her adopted son Tom (Erling Schroeder), who is in love with the beach-warden’s daughter Karin (Karin Nellemose), but her father is dead set against marriage. Tom allows two kind tramps, Pat and Patachon (Carl Schenstrøm and Harald Madsen) to build a hut on the beach. The two go fishing, but lose their boat when they hook a whale. During a storm, their hut blows away, and the captain of a stranded ship reveals that Tom is the son of a wealthy English couple. Pat and Patachon manage to get them reunited and also discover that the ghosts haunting the area are really a gang of smugglers led by Tom’s villainous rival.
One of the pair’s biggest successes, containing all the characteristic elements of their films: the two lovable tramps, the young lovers they help, and the bevy of beautiful "Lau-girls" (inspired by Sennett’s Bathing Beauties, but here dressed in non-daring national costume). Tempo and farce are less important than a sweet and charming atmosphere, even if the film also contains a dance scene which is one of the funniest things Pat and Patachon ever did. The Pat and Patachon films were also characteristically shot in picturesque Danish countryside locations. In fact, they were the only Danish films to make any real use of the Danish landscape; the resolutely urban or foreign background of most Danish films sets them apart from those made in the other Nordic countries, where national and rural themes predominated. -
