Synopsis from BFI catalogue:
DRAMA. Historical. The story of the poet André Chénier at the time of the French Revolution. Main title and credits (6). The Marquis de Pastoret holds a soirée which the brothers Chénier attend. The guests ask André to give a reading of his work. He refuses but when Mlle. Pastoret requests him to give a reading he relents. Later at some offices, Roucher congratulates André on his latest manuscript. However, a crowd of revolutionaries charge by the windows and enter the room. They have come from the Tuileries and wave the head of a victim (Louis XVI?). André visits his brother who is being entertained by tales from the revolutionaries. André leaves in disgust. At a meeting of the Temperance Club, in an old chapel, André sees Dr Guillotin urging the use of his capital punishment device. André sees a vision of the guillotine in action as the spirits of the members of the club, one by one, approach the guillotine to face death. André protests, to no avail. At the offices of the Paris Journal, André dictates an article against the excesses of the revolution. Delegates of the Revolutionary Committee enter and seize him. Marie-Joseph arrives and urges his brother to be prudent and keep quiet. André is sent to Versailles and wanders the gardens. His manservant sees a notice that the Marquis de Pastoret has been declared an enemy of the revolution and informs his master. André rushes to the Pastoret houshold only to discover that the Marquis has made his escape. However, while consoling the Marquis' wife and daughter, the delegates of the Revolutionary Committee arrive to arrest the Marquis. Thwarted they arrest André. In prison, André and his friends give readings of their works. One poet relates a poem of Ancient Greece and Homer, and André sees the vision. He is rudely awakened by the cell bars being opened and the announcement, one by one, of the names on a list. Each man in turn takes his place on the cart. André's name is called and he enters the cart. The cell bars are closed and the cart moves off to the guillotine (1114ft). Note: German intertitles.
