PCU, Dec 16, 2010: The film is Vive la vie de garçon (1908). An intertitle matches with Joye cat 1960 and with Pathé cat summary. Edge code on print is 1909-1911. Joye cat no added in “Foreign title” field. Do the others [now in square brackets] have to be kept as they are, or do they refer to the 1912 film?

SBL 12/7/09 NB: Bologna earmarked two different title numbers on their initial entries: 14970...14989 as CFJJ013; 14990...15020 as CFJJ014
JLY 12/7/2009 Updated. Adding more to the mix, Bologna identified it as “Max Linder - Vive la vie de garcon,” which matches one of the titles Uli mentions below.
SBL 12/7/09 I’m now pretty sure that the envelope says “Max ne remariera pas” which would translate as “Max will not remarry”
SBL 1/30/09 Confirmation from Catherine Cormon that “Troubles of a Grasswidower” is from 1908
Also, I’m wondering if the envelope says “Max ne n mariers pas” or “Max ne [n] mariera pas”
UR 1/18 - 1/30/08 Proper English title is “Troubles of a Grass Widower,” which is how I’d read Paolo’s writing too. Several frames indeed match the transfer of “Grass Widower” in the Kino Video “The Movies begin” set, which, in turn is sometimes identified as “Max reprend sa liberté” (1912), or “Vive la vie de garçon” (1908). Charles Musser’s program notes on this DVD, which date this film to 1908, do not identify the original title of this film. According to the DVD’s producer David Shepard on alt.movies.silent, 8/9/98, “the original French title [,,,] is "Max Celibataire," however Bousquet’s Pathé catalog does not list such a title; in Charles Ford’s Linder book, it appears without a specified year. imdb (ahem) lists this as 1910. Interestingly, the filmography on the webpage maxlinder.de suggests that Max Celibataire may be an alternate title for a title matching the Turconi envelope: Max célibataire [1910/14] (Ford) ? Max ne se mariera pas [1910] (?), so that Turconi’s identification would be correct after all .
I wonder how Turconi dates these clips and whether that information might be helpful to settle the production year of this film.
