PCU, Oct 12, 2017: identified by comparing Joye catalogue number, Joye catalogue title, the absence of edge code, and BFI description: “Drama. A large crowd watch several men prepare a hot air balloon for its ascent; it slowly rises with two men in the basket. Through their telescope, the men can see Paris below them, and later, ships at sea and waves breaking over the rocks. Suddenly there is a thunderstorm, the basket under the balloon swings about until the balloon is struck by lightning. The balloon bursts into flame and collapses, the basket falling into the sea below. A man in a rowing boat sees the wreckage and is able to pull the two men to safety (177ft). Pathé Catalogue 1905 p. 17 no. 1106. The initial balloon ascent is actuality footage. The two men in the basket have a backdrop of sky. The balloon hit by lightning is a model. Production no. 1106.” |
