Program Notes
Stefan Pößinger (34) teaches at the School for Deaf Children in Freiburg-Stegen. He was a versatile musician until he suffered hearing problems. In his role as a teacher, he asked himself, “What can I do with deaf children in the art sector – Music? Theatre?
“—SILENT FILM!”
He found a Super-8 camera, and enough black-and-white stock to shoot maybe 8 minutes. He let the children play. Someone told him how to dub, and how to make people disappear. The story began to take shape.
He let the children play more .... and the story grew longer and longer, with everybody contributing ideas.
It all happened during the school holidays. All the help – and the grown-up actors – came from private people. The locations – about 200 metres from where I live: illegal! (Stefan still does not know…)
He went with his crew to Switzerland to shoot the Alpine ending, and visited Charlie’s grave, showing the pupils more than just how to make a film....
The day before the premiere, somebody from the Freiburg Kommunales Kino crew came to me and asked, “Can you play tomorrow for some stuff made by a teacher? (Can this be good...?)”
