Program Notes
Charlie – a man haunted by the death of his wife – finds himself slipping in and out of consciousness, close to the edge. Adam is a “Jack the Lad” with a taste for gambling and good-looking women. Bethany is destined to cross paths with both men as she searches for love in her cold urban world. One event brings them together – and their lives are changed forever.
The Compulsion project began in October 2002. Filton College’s Media Department eagerly took on this unique opportunity to put into practice the theory their students were learning every day. For the young filmmakers, this project meant the complete creation of a silent film from script to screen. The filming proved a great challenge in freezing pre-Christmas conditions – diesel-powered generators were dragged up Cabot Tower Hill, actors and camera operators valiantly kept going despite hands turning blue with cold. Pure inspiration kept the group on its feet, and morale remained high throughout. Professional film editor Don Fairservice worked alongside the crew, giving invaluable technical guidance at every turn...
The score for Compulsion was created by five Bristol University music students, under the expert guidance of Christopher Austin. The composers began by establishing a number of succinct thematic ideas, with each idea tending to represent an emotional state or relationship rather than a specific object or character. The film was then divided into 5 sections, and each composer was allocated a sequence of the film to score. The students of film music took the longer opening and closing sequences, as they had the advantage of extensive studio access. Although the differing styles of the composers is at times apparent, the use of similar thematic material helps to unify the work. The students have looked throughout to create a musical structure that articulates and clarifies the film’s architecture while creating a sense of sustained narrative development.
