i costi.
Eccola allora
in Das Liebes-ABC e di Gloria Swanson in The Danger Girl.
CP
Ernst Lubitschs film gives Ossi Oswalda an opportunity for some
delightful cross-dressing. She plays an archetypal comedy heroine of the
1910s, an insubordinate young woman who defies her stern governess in
her determination to have her own fun. When her father goes away on a
business trip, he appoints a new young male guardian, whose determination
to be strict is undermined by his own delight in having fun. Ossi evades
supervision by dressing up in a tailcoat and topper and going off to a
dance. In a bar she encounters her young guardian, who fails to recognize
her and takes her for a man. They become the best of friends, and the
next morning find themselves side by side in Ossis bed. It is at
this moment that she realizes that, in the words of the films title,
"Ich möchte kein Mann sein ("I do not want to be
a man). To the contentment of both, she changes her clothes and
reverts to being Ossi.
Again, there is a fascinating comparison with the gender switches
of Asta Nielsen in Das Liebes-ABC and Gloria Swanson in The
Danger Girl. Ossi Oswalda is extremely adept at juggling the genders,
interpreting both roles and challenging the audience who always
know her "actual gender to contemplate the multiplicity
of possibilities for identification. Oswalda successfully integrates the
exhibitionist and demonstrative performance styles of the early film comedians
with a complex narrative form. CP
Ossi Oswalda (1895?/1897?/1899?-1948)
DR
Ossi Oswalda was working as a model and as a dancer at the Berliner Theatre
when she was discovered by Hans Kräly, who in turn introduced her
to Ernst Lubitsch. Lubitsch changed her name from the original Oswalda
Säglich, and developed the comedy talents of the sparkling blonde
in a number of medium-length films, in which she played such varied roles
as an apprentice, a duchess, a diva, and a girl from the ballet. In 1919
he directed her in her best-remembered features, Die Puppe (The
Doll) and Die Austernprinzessin (The Oyster Princess). By 1921
she had already attracted a reputation as "the German Mary Pickford,
and that year she founded her own company, Ossi Oswalda-Film GmbH, managed
by her husband, Baron Gustav von Koczian. In 1925 she was put under contract
by Ufa and continued to work in comedies, though her popularity began
to decline sharply, so that by the beginning of the sound era her career
was virtually over. In the 1940s she lived with the producer Julius Außenberg
in Prague, where in 1943 she shot her last film, Ctrnacty u stolu,
from her own screenplay. She died in Prague, reputedly in poverty, in
1948. DR

possono vantare.

qualsiasi uomo, e luomo qualsiasi donna.
Nondimeno, Madame fu accreditata
ed ebbe pure una particina. Come interprete maschile fu scelto Antonio
migliore tale onore spetta senzaltro a Mantrap
i registi preferivano evitarlo.
]
e Ladies of the Mob.)
KB
" IT is the quality possessed by some which draws
all others with its magnetic force. With IT you win all men
if you are a woman and all women if you are a man. IT
can be a quality of mind as well as physical attraction.Elinor
Glyn
Walter Wanger of Paramount paid Elinor Glyn $50,000 for two letters of
the alphabet to announce to the world that of all the young ladies
she had met in Hollywood, Clara Bow had "It. ("It?
riposted Dorothy Parker. "Hell, she had Those.)
Paramount got their moneys worth in publicity, even if they
did not use Glyns story. Madame was credited nonetheless, and given
a cameo role. As the male lead they cast Antonio Moreno, the veteran Spanish-born
actor who was regarded as a second-string Valentino. He had not been included
in Elinor Glyns original list of those who had "It
but she obligingly dropped Valentino, John Gilbert, and Rex, King of Wild
Horses, and Moreno became the only male contender.
Clara Bows most famous picture may not be her best Mantrap
must take that accolade but it shows her working at full power.
She plays a clerk in a New York department store who takes one look at
her boss and says, "Sweet Santa Claus, give me him! The picture
has a subplot reminiscent of "The Mother and the Law episode
of Intolerance, when uplifters try to seize the baby of Claras
roommate Molly (Priscilla Bonner). Clara steps in and claims the baby
is hers and the husband is her boss (Moreno).
For technicians, the picture is important as being the earliest
surviving film to feature the zoom lens. For audiences, it is significant
as having in a bit part as a newspaper reporter a novice actor called
Gary Cooper. Cooper had a great deal more "It than Moreno,
but he was such an awkward actor at this stage that directors preferred
to avoid him.
Bow had her problems, too. "She was difficult to follow with
the camera because she was a free soul on the set, said Artie Jacobson,
a second cameraman who had been her boyfriend in Brooklyn. "Shed
fly all over the place, which was part of her charm. Complete abandonment.
The picture was a tremendous success, with grosses 50 percent higher
than the closest competition in New York, and double anywhere else. "This
Bow girl certainly has that extra It for which the picture
is named, said Variety, "and she just about runs away
with the film. She can troupe in front of a camera, and the manner in
which she put it all over the supporting cast in this production is a
joy to behold
Clara Bow really does it, and how.
The picture was one of the precious 37 silent films that, according
to David Pierce, were preserved by Paramount out of the 1014 they produced.
(Alas, they destroyed Rough House Rosie, Red Hair, and Ladies
of the Mob.) The dupe negative was acquired by Paul Killiam, who managed
to buy the rights from Paramount, the picture was printed by Karl Malkames,
and Photoplay prepared the film for transmission by Channel Four in 1992.

Specializzato in commedie, Clarence Badger aveva diretto Gloria Swanson
sul set del film: "Reminiscences of my experiences as director of
the Paramount motion picture, IT".
che avesse come tema l"It."
era, senzombra di dubbio, lincarnazione dell"It"
venne affidato a me
e Clara Bow, anzi fu io a presentarle. Per coincidenza, entrambe avevano
i capelli rossi.
lei che ha scritto Three Weeks e The Great Moment, vero?"
i riccioli rossi.
Madame: "Tinti, presumo, mia cara?"
Clara: "Forfora, vedo, mia cara."
Madame: "Ma la mia è vera. La tinta, voglio dire."
Clara: "Ma la mia è la mia fortuna. La tinta, voglio dire."
Madame sapeva stare allo scherzo e, sotto sotto, questa "It Girl"
Bow come "It Girl", lei ed Elinor Glyn divennero molto amiche.
sconvenienti, ma andranno a casa pensando a quanto sono pura ed innocente;
Clarence Badger
Clarence Badger was an experienced comedy man, who had directed Gloria
Swanson at Mack Sennett, Will Rogers at Goldwyn, and Raymond Griffith
at Paramount. In June 1957, 30 years after the films release, Badger,
then living in Australia, sent his memories of directing It to
historian George Pratt at George Eastman House. Excerpts from this account,
entitled "Reminiscences of my experiences as director of the Paramount
motion picture, IT, are here reproduced with the kind permission
of George Eastman House.
It was during the latter part of 1926 when Mr. Jesse Lasky, esteemed
chieftain of Paramount Pictures, inspired by Its motion picture
possibilities, contracted with Madame Glyn, then residing in Hollywood,
to write for Paramount a screen play with her "It the theme.
Mr. Lasky, backed by his studio manager, Mr. Ben Schulberg, named Clara
Bow for the "It role. Clara Bow, then known in Hollywood as
the "flaming red-head, was an exceedingly clever young actress.
She possessed a pretty, doll-like face, a quick wit, and a most fascinating
and unrepressed personality, which, as was most important for the proposed
picture, unquestionably symbolized "It as Madame Glyn defined
"It.
Being a Paramount director at the time, I was assigned to make the picture
.
After we had waited seemingly for weeks for her to finish
the screen play, Elinor Glyn, reputedly of austere and aristocratic mien,
and at first meeting rather chilling to face, finally sent it to us
.
From the scenario departments standpoint, because of sketchy treatment,
it was an unfinished job
. [Later] the authoress acknowledged to
the chief on the phone that this version was only her "skeleton child
to which she intended adding "flesh later on. But the chief,
upset by the costly waste of time, immediately ordered the scenario department
to write a new version, one with plenty of "It, one built around
Clara Bow and snugly fitted to her personality.
I happened to be present at the first meeting between Madame Glyn and
Clara Bow; in fact, I introduced them to one another. Coincidentally,
both had red hair. Peppy little Clara immediately found herself an object
of arrogant and critical scrutiny. But the imperious authoress was soon
to know her Clara. Brimming with deviltry, Clara came out with:
"Oh, you wrote Three Weeks and The Great Moment, didnt
you?
"I did, my child, Madame replied, her eyebrows uplifted superciliously.
"Lady, you sure can dish out hot stuff! Clara exclaimed.
Not a feather ruffled, the authoress turned to me. "You were
quite right, Mr. Badger, this girl is certainly the personification of
my It child. Then turning to Clara, she ran her fingers critically
through the red heads curls. Clara immediately, not to be outdone,
ran her fingers through Madames hair.
Madame: "Dyed, I presume, my dear?
Clara: "Dandruff, I see, my dear.
Madame: "But mines definitely real. The colour, I mean.
Clara: "But mines my fortune. The colour, I mean.
Deep down, Madame was really getting a kick out of the It girl,
good sport that she really was. Her amused, sly glance in my direction
told me so
.
During the filming of this picture, which, incidentally, made Clara
Bow famous as the It Girl, she and Elinor Glyn became most sincerely
attached to one another. An unusual friendship; one a natural, unaffected,
wise-cracking Brooklyn girl, the other an English woman, grande dame-ish
and condescending.
Clara Bow was a pleasure to direct. She would melt into the character
she was portraying so cleverly, just as though it was, in reality, a story
of her own life being picturized. Shrewd-minded, too, always having in
mind the box-office and her audience when before the camera. For instance,
when filming her in one particular close-up shot for It, which
called for expression of that great moment when love first enters a young
girls heart, Clara, following my directions, gazed at her "sweetheart
with an expression of lingering, calf-like, longing on her pretty face;
perfectly all right if she had stopped here. But she did not. Continuing
on, the camera still grinding away, her doll-like, tantalizing eyes suddenly
became inflamed with unwholesome passion. Then the young rascal suddenly
changed her expression again, this time to one of virtuous, innocent appeal.
I stopped the camera. "And whats all that about, Clara?
I demanded.
"Well, she came back, "if you knew your onions
like youre supposed to, youd know that that first expression
was for the lovesick dames in the audience, and that second expression,
that passionate stuff, was for the boys and their papas, and that that
third expression well, Mr. Badger, just about the time all the
old women in the audience had become shocked and scandalized by the passionate
part, theyd suddenly see that third expression, become absorbed
in it, and change their minds about me having naughty ideas, and go home
thinking how pure and innocent I was; and having got me mixed up personally
with this character Im playing, theyd come again when my next
picture showed up.
I allowed Clara that one.
The picture "shot, edited, previewed, I received a slap
on the back from the management; also one the memory of which I
cherish from Clara Bow. From Elinor Glyn, no slap, but in my ear
a vibrant whisper: "For the lovely flesh and flame with which you
have clothed my skeleton child, my eternal thanks, dear man.
"Ah, I whispered back, "but I, the world, dear
lady, salute you for mothering the child its ingenious creation.
Clarence Badger
Clara Bow (1905-1965)
to the Sea in Ships (1922). Fu notata e chiamata a interpretare svariati
sono commedie. Pellicole come Get Your Man (A caccia di marito;
1927), Red Hair (1928) e, chiaramente, It diedero carta
JBK
Her own life was anything but funny yet much of Clara Bows
film legacy falls well within the sphere of comedy. Born in Brooklyn to
a lower-middle-class family, Clara grew up with no prospect of a show-business
career until she won a personality contest at age 14, the first in a series
of coincidences that led her to a small role in Down to the Sea in
Ships (1922). This attention-getting appearance led her in turn to
a wide variety of roles, mostly supporting ones, in numerous films throughout
the mid-1920s. (One of them, Helens Babies [1924], can be
seen elsewhere in our program.) Producer B.P. Schulberg took a special
interest in Clara and starred her in a number of his independent films,
and when he went to Paramount in 1926, Clara went too. As a Paramount
star, Clara came into her own. William K. Everson once wrote that, for
all her fame and notoriety during the 1920s, Clara never made a single
film that was really representative of her entire output; still, a high
percentage of her Paramount pictures were comedies. Films like Get
Your Man (1927), Red Hair (1928), and, of course, It
gave free rein to Claras irrepressible spirit, promoting the image
of a reckless, thrill-seeking flapper. Unfortunately, her attempts to
live up to that image off the screen led to some serious crises in her
personal life just about the time of the talking-picture revolution. In
the early 1930s Claras star fell as swiftly as it had risen just
a few years earlier. She retired from show business, but during her brief
moment she had etched an indelible image in film history. "Countless
young women have tried to imitate her on the screen, wrote Edward
Wagenknecht, "yet there has never been anybody at all like her.

quasi sempre commedie. Fu il principale collaboratore di Buster Keaton
e diresse W.C. Fields in tre capolavori della comcità: The Bank
Dick, My Little Chickadee e Never Give a Sucker an Even
Break. Concluse la carriera in modo meno prestigioso, occupandosi
in collaborazione con un altro talento comico in declino, William
Beaudine degli episodi della serie Monogram "Jiggs and Maggie".

invariably comedy. He was Buster Keatons best collaborator and directed

ended his career less prestigiously, making episodes of the "Jiggs

Dorothy Mackaill (1903-1990)
a Londra.
Richard Barthelmess (cfr. "Saving the Silents"). DR

da matrona in Old Wives for New (1918), Dont Change Your
Husband (Non cambiate marito; 1919) e Why Change Your Wife? (Perché
cambiate moglie?; 1920).

Naturalmente riesce a mettere tutto sottosopra
CP
Léontine is left to take care of the house and watch over her
little brother while her parents are away. Naturally she manages to turn
everything upside down, and in the briefest possible time sets fire to
the kitchen, floods the house, and loses both dog and brother. When she
advertises the loss in the newspaper, people crowd to the house with babies
and dogs. Her returning parents face the disaster.
Throughout her
films, Léontine regularly deploys her dainty figure in the guise
of enfant terrible, with narrow waist, hair in a bow, and knee-length
skirt. At times she has an odd, stiff way of moving, but is also adept
at using her body in a childishly sexual way. Léontine garde
la maison is interesting in that there are no visible consequences
of the houses destruction, and Léontine is not punished for
her deeds. The film ends with a weeping Léontine sitting on the
stairs. CP

DAS LIEBES-ABC / [LABC DELLAMORE
/ THE ABC OF LOVE] (Neutral Film GmbH, Berlin, D 1916)
Dir.: Magnus Stifter; sc.: Louis Levy, Martin Jörgensen;
des.: Fritz Seyffert; asst. dir.: Ernst Köner; cast:
Asta Nielsen, Ludwig Trautmann, Magnus Stifter; prima proiezione
pubblica / released: 16.8.1913, Berlin; 35mm, 865m., 47 (16

Questultimo,
The Danger Girl, in cui unaltra grande dello schermo, Gloria
DR
Unquestionably Asta Nielsens most extraordinary comedy performance
is in Das Eskimobaby, shown recently in Bolognas Cinema Ritrovato,
in which the actress sustains the role of a native Greenland peasant unleashed
on a sophisticated Copenhagen family. Forgoing this as too well-known,
it was irresistible for this years Giornate to show the two contrasting
comic performances of Engelein and Das Liebes-ABC. The latter
is particularly interesting for comparison with the exactly contemporary
The Danger Girl, in which we see another great screen actress,
Gloria Swanson, applying her gifts to comedy and to exploiting the special
ironies of gender switching.
The gender exchanges in Das Liebes-ABC are remarkably complex.
They begin when Nielsen adopts a mans hat while planting a womans
hat on the head of Trautmann. This leads to her contrasted full-dress
disguises as a young man-about-town, and as a clumsy waiter who spills
food over the rival with whom Trautmann is dining a "lady
who turns out to be a man, the servant and confidant, in drag. Nielsen
gives travestie a unique piquancy by her quicksilver shifts in
and out of the gender character.
Some apparent cutting and loss of titles in the first section of this
print makes the plot a little difficult to follow; the following synopsis
will be helpful preparation for the screening:
The families of Philip (Ludwig Trautmann) and Lis (Nielsen) have
long intended that they should marry. Lis is therefore very excited when
Philip comes to visit, but is disappointed to find that his upbringing
by two old aunts have left him a prim wimp, who never drinks and does
not know how to kiss. Lis determines to complete his education in love,
and when he is supposed to take the train to return to the aunts, she
hijacks him and carries him off on the express to Paris. The succeeding
action is self-explanatory. DR

MARY JANES MISHAP; OR, DONT FOOL WITH

dalleminente pioniere britannico George Albert Smith (1864-1959),
Mary Janes Mishap riprende dilatandolo
DR
This was the last significant fiction film directed by the outstanding
British pioneer George Albert Smith (1864-1959): from 1903 he devoted
himself to the development and exploitation of Kinemacolor; and after
1914, when William Friese Greene succeeded in a patents suit against Kinemacolor,
Smith virtually retired from the film business. He admirably combined
the qualities of technician and entertainer. He began his career in his
teens as a stage hypnotist, and went on to perform a fake mind-reading
act which was so convincing that he was for long admired by and associated
with the Society for Psychical Research. For a while he worked as a magic
lantern showman, offering an astronomical lecture, inspired by another
of his enduring interests. In 1892 he created a pleasure garden in his
hometown of Brighton, where, around 1899, he built Britains first
glass-house studio. He was already producing films by late 1896 or early
1897, and his ingenuity resulted in such innovations as the close-up,
editing (in 1899 he made a three-shot film), and superimposition; while
he anticipated Méliès with a Cinderella and a Faust.
His films found an international market, and he collaborated with Méliès
on The Coronation of Edward VII, assisting with the design and
operating the camera.
When Mary Jane, the housemaid, has difficulty
lighting the fire, she has recourse to paraffin and is in consequence
blown to pieces. Her ghost, clutching a paraffin can, returns to alarm
the mourners at her grave. Mary Janes Mishap is an expanded,
unofficial remake of Edisons 1901 The Finish of Bridget McKeen,
though elaborations like Mary Janes ghostly reincarnation exemplify
the dark humour of the Brighton School. DR
Laura Eugenia Bayley
di Brighton. Tutte e quattro risultano aver lavorato nei film di Smith;

Quattro mesi dopo The Champion di Charles Chaplin, uscì
Miss Courtney
di The Champion, mimica chapliniana e caratteristi compresi. Sebbene
DR
Four months after the release of Charles Chaplins The Champion,
there appeared this shot-by shot copy of the film, up to the point of
the actual boxing match. No doubt the reason for omitting the fisticuffs
was that Chaplin is here impersonated by the delicate and refined Miss
Minerva Courtney. Miss Courtney arrives at the "May Be Studios
as herself, one of numerous hopefuls seeking work. When turned down, she
asks to be allowed to show the company chiefs her impersonation of Charlie
Chaplin, and to recruit some of the studios actors for supporting
roles. After a dressing-room scene in which she has some problem affixing
the moustache, Miss Courtney embarks on her recreation of The Champion,
with all the Chaplin business and supporting characters. Although her
facial shape does not match Chaplins, her imitation of his style
and comedy business is remarkably accurate and even more remarkably,
comic. DR
Minerva Courtney
in Her Impersonation of Charlie Chaplin, Minerva Courtney as Chaplin
Putting It Over e Miranda Courtney as Chaplin in Her Job in the
Laundry.
DR
Surprisingly, given the charm and skill displayed in her only surviving
film performance, no trace of this intriguing actress has so far been
uncovered, other than the fact that in July 1915 she starred in three
short films which she is reputed to have written and directed herself:
Minerva Courtney in Her Impersonation of Charlie Chaplin, Minerva
Courtney as Chaplin Putting It Over, and Minerva Courtney as Chaplin
in Her Job in the Laundry. The name and something of her style suggest
that she might have been English, but this is pure speculation. Exactly
contemporary actresses with name similarities were Jane Courtney, Helen
Courtney, and Minerva Florence, but there is no evidence of any links
or name changes to connect Minerva Courtney with these. DR

DR
Sadly, the director of this precociously stylish and rhythmic little
comedy is not identified: perhaps we should assume a creative collaboration
between the actress and the photographer. Petrine Sonne plays a severe
bespectacled governess who is clearly an obsessive reader. As she takes
her small charge for a walk, her attention is wholly distracted by her
huge newspaper, in which she eventually becomes enwrapped. In the course
of her peregrinations she twice finds herself holding the wrong hand,
and surprises her employers by arriving home with a strange child.

Petrine Sonne (1870-1946)
morte avvenuta 54 anni dopo.
DR

aere din hustru (The Master of the House; 1925). She resumed
her screen career in 1935, and continued to appear regularly in films
until her death: her final role was in John Prices Billet mrk

salvando galantemente Suzanne dai topi.

This is perhaps the most polished and exquisite of the series of films
in which Léonce and Suzanne cope with the ups-and-downs of a bourgeois
marriage. In this case a quarrel impels them to seek the solitude of separate
bedrooms; but Léonce has the opportunity to redeem himself when
he gallantly rescues Suzanne from mice. The Léonce-Suzanne films
generally manage a piquant ending: this is no exception. DR
Suzanne Grandais (1893-1920)
A 15 anni, mentre già lavorava
dellomaggio a Desmet. DR
The tragically short-lived Suzanne Grandais (she was killed in a car accident
while filming in LEssor in Alsace, on 18 August 1920, at
the age of 27) remains one of the most beautiful and sophisticated comediennes
of the silent screen. As a 15-year-old clerk, she answered a newspaper
advertisement which led to a bit part in Le Roi at the Théâtre
des Variétés and then to an ingénue role in Le
Château des loufoques at the Théâtre Cluny. Having
thereupon embarked on a tour of South America, she returned to Paris,
found work at Lux and Éclair, and was finally spotted and signed
for Gaumont by Louis Feuillade. Here she made 45 films in a year and a
half, and leapt to stardom with the series of domestic comedies in which
she was teamed with Léonce Perret. Since her major fame now rests
upon this partnership, it is surprising to discover that it lasted less
than a year, during which Perret and Grandais made some 15 one-reel films
together. From Gaumont Grandais moved to the German company Dakagé,
for whom during 1913-14 she made 18 films under the direction of Marcel
Robert. After this she established her own production company, Les Films
Suzanne Grandais, in partnership with Raoul dArchy. Her talent as
a dramatic actress can be seen in LObsession du souvenir
(Gaumont, 1913), showing in the Desmet tribute programme in this years

OH, MABEL BEHAVE / LE SIÈGE DE MABEL
(Triangle Film Corp. / Photocraft Productions, US 1922)
Dirs.: Mack Sennett, Ford Sterling; titles: Joseph Farnham;
cast: Mabel Normand, Mack Sennett, Ford Sterling,
Owen Moore; prima proiezione pubblica / released: 20.1.1922, but
probably shot c.1915; 35mm, 890m., 43 (18 fps), imbibito / tinted,
Cinémathèque Française. French main title and
intertitles.
Convinto
in Molly O (1921).
con Mabel: Oh, Mabel Behave, The Extra Girl e Suzanna.
ma in Mabel Normand: A Source Book to Her Life and Films (1994),
qualitativamente superiori. Se linterpretazione di Sennett in questo
cinque rulli era simile a quella fornita in The Little Teacher,
DR
After a rift with Mack Sennett in 1917, Mabel Normand left her mentor
and lover to sign a 5-year contract with Goldwyn. The films she made there
had uneven success, and her career was not helped by personal problems.
Probably from drug-use, she was reputed to be unreliable and began to
acquire an uncharacteristic weary aspect. Her name was also associated
with the scandals surrounding the murder of the director William Desmond
Taylor. Sennett believed that he alone could rescue her career, and arrranged
a loan-out agreement with Goldwyn to star Mabel in Molly O
(1921). The film (shown at the 2001 Giornate) was a success, and Sennett
went on to release three more films starring Mabel: Oh, Mabel Behave,
The Extra Girl, and Suzanna. The first of these, however,
appears not to have been a new production at all, but a film which had
been shelved for at least five years. The New York State license application
indicates that the film was produced c.1917 (AFI Catalog), but
William Thomas Sherman, in Mabel Normand: A Source Book to Her Life
and Films (1994), believes it was actually shot in 1915. Sherman speculates
on possible reasons for the long-delayed release:
"(1) The film might not have been very good, and thought unfit to
be released at the same time as the higher quality Triangle vehicles.
If Sennetts performance in this 5-reel film was anything like the
one he gave in The Little Teacher, this decision might not to be
thought so surprising.
(2) The slapstick nature of the film perhaps did not suit the higher standards
Triangle was aspiring to create.
(3) Being finished apparently not very long before the incident involving
Mabels walking in on Mae Busch and Sennett together, the result
of which, for whatever reason, she suffered a head injury, it might have
been thought to have been in bad taste to release it in as much as it
might have contained indirect references to, or reminders of, her planned
marriage to Sennett.
No doubt Sennett chose this moment to
retrieve the film in order to have a release to follow up the success
of Molly O, and to fill in the delay before Mabel became
free of commitments to Goldwyn, for whom she still had to finish Head
Over Heels (1922).
The film has been restored by the Cinémathèque Française.
The print was not available for viewing when this catalogue went to press,
but a contemporary synopsis from Moving Picture World (17 December
1921) describes the plot of this burlesque melodrama: "Squire Peachem
uses the mortgage he holds on the innkeepers property as a lever
to win his daughter, but the daughter cannot see it that way, as she loves
a young swell, Randolph Roanoke. The squire, with the aid of his trusty
but ignorant henchman, Blaa Blaa, seeks to sidetrack Roanoke, which leads
to complications, but how poorly he succeeds and how the daughter brings
things around so that she has her own way furnishes the action for the
burlesque, which contains fights, a comedy duel, stunts and thrills.

Mabel Normand (1892-1930)
Lamabile Mabel Normand avrebbe potuto facilmente avere successo
I primi Keystone beneficiarono
ed ancor di più nei lungometraggi successivi sia per Sennett (Mickey;
americana. JBK
Lovely Mabel Normand could easily have succeeded as a dramatic actress,
and in fact she essentially began her film career at Biograph, under D.W.
Griffith, playing dramatic roles. But while at Biograph she met another
up-and-coming talent, Mack Sennett, and both their fates were changed
forever. The personal relationship between Mack and Mabel would be a rocky
and ultimately unhappy one, but in the meantime they worked together to
produce some landmark American comedy films. The early Keystones benefited
from Mabels irrepressible sense of fun, athletic ability, and willingness
to indulge in strenuous physical comedy. Later, in a co-starring series
with Roscoe Arbuckle, and even more notably in subsequent features for
both Sennett (Mickey; The Extra Girl) and Goldwyn (Pecks
Bad Girl; Joan of Plattsburg), Mabel proved that she was capable of
subtler things.
Buoyant, vivacious, witty, mercurial (Sennett once
called her "as unpredictable as a spring morning), and possessed
of both slapstick energy and subtle pantomimic and dramatic gifts, Mabel
Normand remains one of the premier Funny Ladies of American comedy.

Orchids and Ermine esemplifica lallegro materialismo della
Logicamente,
DR
Orchids and Ermine exemplifies the cheerful materialism of the 1920s
flapper, whose single-minded aim was to entrap a rich husband. The story
is familiar. Colleen Moore plays Pink, the telephone receptionist in a
grand hotel, who shares confidences about marital ambitions with Ermintrude,
the brassy flower-girl (Gwen Lee). Pink gives up her ambitions of orchids
and ermine when she falls in love with a young man whom she takes to be
the humble valet of a millionaire. Of course the supposed valet is really
the millionaire all the time he has temporarily switched places
with his servant to keep himself from the attention of golddiggers. Ermintrude,
of course, lands up with the real valet, whom she has supposed to be the
millionaire.
The titles are by a star title-writer, Ralph Spence, and it is
significant of the importance attached to good titles that Variety
considered that "Spences contribution is the only item that
really justifies the 69 minutes of running time, and that the titles
made up for Carey Wilsons "not much of a story. Today
the film has a lot of attractions, in the vivacious performances and in
the evocation of 1920s New York most notably a scene where the
lovers have an encounter on the open top of a city bus in a downpour of
rain. DR
Colleen Moore (1900-1988)
aveva sostenuto contro i critici di The Birth of a Nation e di
Intolerance.
Dopo alcune parti in film minori,
alla First National. Artista brillante e originale, si distinse anche
in ruoli drammatici in film come So Big (Grande
.così!;1925)
e Lilac Time (Le sette aquile; 1928).
How Women Can Make Money in the Stock Market (Come le donne possono
fare i soldi in Borsa).
DR
Colleen Moore was, along with Clara Bow, a prototype of the 1920s "Flapper.
Her clothes and hairstyles exerted a strong influence on young people
of the period. Born Kathleen Morrison, she was the daughter of a Michigan
irrigation engineer and was educated in a convent and the Detroit music
conservatory, where she studied piano. D.W. Griffith gave her a chance
in films out of gratitude to her uncle Walter Howey, editor of the Chicago
Examiner and the inspiration for Walter Burns in The Front Page,
who had supported him against critics of The Birth of a Nation
and Intolerance. Griffith gave her her screen name and no doubt
suggested the casting for the films she made in a 6-month contract with
Triangle. After roles in minor films, she found her form when she emerged
as a bobbed-haired, ebullient flapper, notably in Flaming Youth
(1923). Her career was undoubtedly helped when in 1922 she married John
McCormick, head of production at First National. A distinctive and vivacious
comedienne, she was also effective in the dramatic roles of So Big
(1925) and Lilac Time (1928). She made a few films in the sound
era, but retired after The Scarlet Letter (1934), directed by the
Italian-born pioneer silent star and director Robert G. Vignola.
It seems not inappropriate to her character in Orchids and
Ermine that her second and third husbands were stockbrokers, and that
in 1969 she published a book entitled How Women Can Make Money in
the Stock Market. In addition she wrote an autobiography, Silent
Star (1968), and a book about the dolls house which was the principal

THE PATSY / FASCINO BIONDO (Cosmopolitan
/ Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, US 1928)
Dir.: King Vidor; sc.: Agnes Christine Johnson; adapt. from
the play by Barry Connors (1925); titles: Ralph Spence; ph.:
John Seitz; ed.: Hugh Wynn; des.: Cedric Gibbons; wardrobe:
Gilbert Clark; cast: Marion Davies, Orville Caldwell,
Marie Dressler, Dell Henderson, Lawrence Gray, Jane Winton; prima
proiezione pubblica / released: 10.3.1928; 35mm, 7290ft.,
81 (24 fps), Library of Congress. Didascalie in inglese / English
intertitles.
I due film, The Patsy e Show
Show People affascinante spaccato
The Patsy, tuttavia è forse
lei, dive MGM, mentre The Three Sinners (Vita nuova), con Pola
Negri, uscì quasi contemporaneamente a The Patsy.
didascalie, Ralph Spence).
in The Fair Co-Ed (Giovinezza prepotente).
JBK
Marion Davies modern critical reputation rests largely on two
silent films she made with King Vidor in 1928. Vidor, one of the finest
American directors of the period, was in a fairly unique position: he
had both the perception and talent to make use of Davies true strengths
as a performer and the clout to defy William Randolph Hearsts
well-intentioned efforts on her behalf. The two resulting films, The
Patsy and Show People, are both unqualified delights (later
Vidor also directed Davies in the sound film Not So Dumb). Show
People, with its fascinating slice of authentic 1920s Hollywood, is
today the more familiar of the two. But The Patsy, as a showcase
for Marion as a Funny Lady, is perhaps even better. With fewer distractions,
Marion has the screen to herself far more of the time, and she makes good
use of it. Energetic, irrepressible, bubbling over with good humor yet
capable of quiet sensitivity, she proves herself once and for all a genuine
star. In her most celebrated scene she demonstrates her talent for mimicry
by offering devastatingly accurate impressions of Mae Murray, Lillian
Gish, and Pola Negri. (Mae Murray and Lillian Gish were, like Davies,
MGM stars at the time, and Pola Negris Three Sinners was
released almost simultaneously with The Patsy.)
Along with
Marions performance, The Patsy offers the services of a distinguished
supporting cast (not to mention those of ace title writer Ralph Spence).
Comedy veteran Dell Henderson, who had just appeared in Vidors The
Crowd, plays Marions father, and her sister is portrayed by the
former Ziegfeld beauty Jane Winton, who was now pursuing a film career
and who had already appeared with Marion in The Fair Co-Ed. More
to the point for our present purposes is the appearance of Marie Dressler
in a generous role as Marions domineering mother. Dressler was currently
fighting her way back from a long period of undeserved obscurity, and
her role in The Patsy was an important step in her comeback.

Marion Davies (1897-1961)
in dispendiosi film in costume come When Knighthood Was in Flower
Marion rimase comunque attiva, occupandosi
di beneficenza e sostenendo, in particolare, unimportante clinica
infantile di Los Angeles. JBK
Time has been less than kind to the memory of Marion Davies. Her relationship
with William Randolph Hearst, who essentially manufactured a film career
for her, has seemed to call her talent into question, and her inexpert
handling of dialogue in sound films is no help. But its important
to remember that Marion was already established as a musical stage performer
before she met Hearst, and in any case her silent films offer ample evidence
of a bona fide talent. One disadvantage of the Hearst connection was Hearsts
apparent feeling that comedy films were beneath Marions dignity,
and his consequent tendency to smother her in expensive costume pictures
like When Knighthood Was In Flower (1922) and Janice Meredith
(1924). Marion herself, a born Funny Lady, had no such reservations about
comedy. King Vidor told Kevin Brownlow that she enthusiastically entered
into the slapstick gags of Show People, once Hearst had been tricked
into leaving the set! The Vidor films are generally agreed to represent
the peak of Marions film career; after making an uncertain transition
to sound she gradually drifted away from filmmaking, and her career was
finished by the end of the 1930s. But she remained active, devoting herself
to charitable causes, in particular a major childrens clinic in
Los Angeles. JBK
Marie Dressler (1869-1934)

Min and Bill (Castigo;1930) vinse un premio Oscar.

Although Marie Dressler is fondly remembered as a Funny Lady, much of
that reputation was established on the stage, where she had been prominent
since the early 1890s; it took some time for Marie and the movies to get
comfortable with each other. Her starring role in the Sennett feature
Tillies Punctured Romance (1914), adapted from one of her
stage hits, should have inaugurated a successful screen career for her,
but the film was released as the Chaplin vogue was beginning to catch
on, and has been regarded ever since as a Chaplin vehicle. Subsequent
attempts to revive the "Tillie character in follow-up films
were unsuccessful, and Marie seemed to have no future in films. Unfortunately,
opportunities on the stage began to evaporate at the same time, and Maries
career entered a decade-long slump. She was active in several actors
equity groups and campaigned for the Liberty Loan drive during World War
I, but her professional life was at a standstill, and she reportedly considered
suicide. Not until 1927 did her acting career revive but, once
started, it did so with a vengeance. Small roles were followed by progressively
larger ones, she found herself in demand for one film after another, and
Marie sailed into the sound era with assurance. Her final years were marked
by prominent roles as an MGM contract star, and by an Academy Award for
her performance in Min and Bill (1930). JBK

Questo garbato film realizzato dagli Young agli inizi dello star system,
DR
Made in the first era of the star system, the Youngs film gives
charming insight into the advent of fan worship. Clara Kimball Young plays
a young woman besotted with Vitagraphs major star, Maurice Costello.
In a successful effort to disllusion her, he permits himself to visit
her, but presents himself as a much-married man (the "wife
is his secretary in drag), surrounded by brats. DR
Clara Kimball Young (1890-1960)
Allanagrafe Edith Mathilde Kimball, figlia delleminente attore
Durante
una tournée conobbe e sposò James Young (nato nel 1878;
attivo nel cinema fino al 1928). Nel 1909 la coppia passò alla
Vitagraph.
Cheaters, Eyes of Youth, The Forbidden Woman e What
No Man Knows.
DR
Born Edith Mathilde Kimball, the daughter of a prominent actor, Edward
M. Kimball (who can be seen as Claras father in A Vitagraph
Romance [1912], included in the Giornates tribute to the Desmet
Collection), Clara was on the stage from the age of three. While touring
in stock she met and married James Young (born 1878; active in films until
1928); and the couple joined Vitagraph in 1909. Under Youngs direction,
Clara, a classical dark-haired beauty, made numerous one-reelers, and
she was ranked a top star of the pre-First World War era. A charming and
sophisticated comedienne, she nevertheless increasingly chose to play
dramatic roles, to become an archetype of the New Woman in the immediate
post-war era, in titles like Cheating Cheaters, Eyes of Youth,
The Forbidden Woman, and What No Man Knows. Following her
divorce from Young in 1916 and unwise management by her new husband and
producer-director Harry Garson, Youngs career deteriorated rapidly,
and by the 1920s she was forced to look for work in vaudeville. In the
1930s she returned to the screen as a character actress in minor roles,
and retired in 1941. DR

Dir.: Roméo Bosetti; cast: Sarah Duhamel (Rosalie);
35mm, 100m., 5 (16 fps), Nederlands Film Museum (Desmet Collection).
Titolo (e didascalie?) in olandese / Dutch main title (and intertitles?).
I suoi mobili
CP
At the beginning of the film, Sarah Duhamel sits at a piano and chats
with the audience; this also involves her pulling faces at them, opening
her eyes wide and rolling them from side to side. The concierge enters,
waving a rent book under her nose, and she makes it clear that she has
no money. Her furniture is then auctioned off, item by item, and she is
turned out onto the streets. The dejected Rosalie runs after her furniture
with gestures of despair, often turning to the audience to explain her
predicament. When she at last finds her furniture piled on a cart in front
of a junk shop, she jumps for joy and kisses it passionately, before waving
goodbye one last time. Then, via animation techniques, the piano, table,
chairs, etc., magically follow Rosalie along the street. When she sees
it coming towards her, Rosalie claps her hands and jumps for joy, and
repeatedly turns around and waves, beckoning it to follow her. In the
final shot, Rosalie watches with delight as her piano, table, bed, etc.,
march back into her old room. At the end of the film, she leaps up the
stairs behind them, and embraces the obviously astonished concierge. Her
final happy gestures are for the audience. CP

Tramite unagenzia i signori Petipas assumono Rosalie come governante.
e disinfettata in mille modi.

Mr. and Mrs. Petipas engage Rosalie from an agency as their housekeeper.
The other women at the agency, jealous at being rejected, send an anonymous
letter to the Petipas advising them that Rosalie has cholera. The letter
arrives as Rosalie is serving her first meal, and to her amazement her
disgusted employers stick her in a sack and carry her to the doctor. There
her hair is cut off, she is submerged fully clothed into a bath, sprayed,
powdered, and otherwise disinfected. She is locked in a bare room, but
escapes to return to the agency, where Mr. and Mrs. Petipas have already
arrived looking for a new cook. When she discovers the truth about what
was happened, she assaults her tormenters.
Rosalie often embodied roles as housekeeper, maid, or the daughter
of a bourgeois family. Here she likewise shows her very emphatic pleasure
in physical play. In the struggle with the doctors and with the women,
her feelings are strongly declared, emphasized by sweeping gestures and
grotesque facial expressions. CP
Sarah Duhamel ("Rosalie")
réunis, del 13 giugno 1913 e riproposto in 1895, n.
1, settembre 1986:
"Nata a Rouen, Sarah Duhamel aveva cominciato a calcare le scene
in tenera età.
Gavroche, alias Berto, crea esilaranti scene comiche.
Information on the early French comediennes is very hard to find, so we
must be grateful for a little profile of Sarah Duhamel which appeared
in Cinéma et lÉcho du cinéma réunis,
13 June 1913 (cited in 1895, No. 1, September 1986):
"Mme. Sarah Duhamel was born in Rouen, and trod the boards from a
very early age.
At 3 years old, she made her debut at the Théâtre Lafayette
in Le Petit Caporal, and was instantly engaged in Paris, to play
childrens roles, at the Théâtre du Gymnase, the Odéon,
and the Théâtre Libre, directed by Antoine.
She played the role of the cheeky little girl 4700 times, both in Paris
and in the provinces. This figure makes comment unnecessary, but clearly
proves that Mme. Sarah Duhamel is considered as unique in her genre.
She was among those most enthusiastic for the cinema from its beginnings.
She created the Rosalie pictures, of joyous memory, in the most amusing
style, as is well known; they remain, unquestionably, incomparable.
She is at present playing in a new series, the Pétronille films,
whose success increases daily, and, in company with the inimitable Gavroche,
alias Bertho, she creates a great number of comic scenes of the most hilarious
effect.
This artist, delightful companion, knows no danger. A thousand times she
has performed the most intrepid and the most audacious acts.
We unreservedly congratulate Mme. Sarah Duhamel for bringing to the cinema
the combination of her precious talent and her courage in every challenge.
The "Rosalie series ran from 1911 to 1913, after which Duhamel
made the "Petronille series for Éclair (1913-14). She
also appeared in several films as partner to Little Moritz (Moritz Schwartz)
and Casimir (Lucien Bataille).

Fay Tincher (1884-1983)
in Home, Sweet Home (1914) ed in The Battle of the Sexes
Nota allora come

Mistinguett (1872-1956)
fino a 76 anni. Chevalier parlò del suo "selvaggio splendore"
e nel 1929, in Acteurs, Albert Dubeux (citato nellEnciclopedia
DR
Born Jeanne-Marie Bourgeois in Enghien, Mistinguett made her precocious
debut at the Casino de Paris in 1890 as an eccentric singer, billed as
"Miss Tinguette. Her career in music hall soon took off: she
remained 8 years at the Eldorado from 1897, then appeared in numerous
theatres and in 1907 enjoyed a triumph in partnership with Max Dearly
with the acrobatic dance "La Valse Chaloupée, which
remained for a decade essential to her repertoire. After a successful
American tour in 1912 she appeared at the Folies-Bergère, forming
a professional and personal association with the young Maurice Chevalier.
Together they created "La Valse Renversante, which proved as
sensational as "La Valse Chaloupée; they were filmed
performing it by Pathé in 1914. Until the First World War Mistinguett
alternated music hall with regular theatrical roles, but from 1914 she
dedicated herself wholly to revue, moving between the Folies-Bergère,
the Casino de Paris, the Moulin Rouge, and the Mogador. With her extravagant
costumes surmounted by feathered headdresses as high as herself
and staging, she set the style of inter-war Parisian revue; and
she and her famous legs were rated national treasures. She continued to
perform, still adored by her audiences, until the age of 76. Chevalier
wrote of her "wild splendour, and Albert Dubeux, in Les
Acteurs (1929; quoted in the Enciclopedia dello spettacolo),
said that she embodied "revolt and jest, legs and a brain. Singer,
dancer, mime, acrobat, she became
an astonishing temperate and
humane comedienne, and her wild cheek was allied to the care for truth
that marks out true actors. Her film career began with a "mimodrame
cinématographique, Lempreinte (1908), with Dearly,
and in 1909-1913 she made a number of comic shorts for Pathé /
SCAGL and others, including several in partnership with Prince-Rigadin.

Mistinguett détective (1917), which gave her the opportunity

Liebes-ABC, The Danger Girl e Ich möchte kein Mann
sein.

DR

Even though the official Funny Lady in this film is the dominating
Anita Garvin, there is the important bonus of two great female impersonations
by Stan Laurel, which more than merit a place in the presentation, if
only for comparison with the reverse gender-switching in Das Liebes-ABC,
The Danger Girl, and Ich möchte kein Mann sein. Stans
job as a detective inexplicably requires him to disguise himself as a
dizzy though predatory maid and a menacing femme fatale.

with Joe Rock, and the writing credit to Tay Garnett.) DR
This print was reconstructed in collaboration with the Cinémathèque

Battle of the Century, Swiss Miss (Noi e la gonna) e

Mary Ann Jackson (1923)
avidamente. Hal Roach riuscì ad assicurarsela per "Our Gang",
facendola cominciare in Crazy House (1928). Dopo aver interpretato
fu nei panni di Rosie Kettle in Ma and Pa Kettle Go to Town (I
milionari a New York; 1950). Oggi risiede in California e, a quanto
ci viene riferito, è sorpresa e felice di avere sempre tanti ammiratori.

Mary Ann Jackson seriously competes with Baby Peggy for the title of silent
Hollywoods funniest infant Funny Lady. The daughter of actress Charlotte
Jackson, she was given a role at the age of 2 by Mack Sennett in Dangerous
Curves Behind (1925). The following year she was cast as the daughter
of Ruth Hiatt and Raymond McKee in Smiths Visitor, and went
on to appear in 30 of Sennetts "Smith Family series,
establishing a distinctive persona and a large fan following with her
characterisation of the obstreperous and accident-prone child, whose eyes
have a tendency to cross or faced with food widen greedily.
She was then poached by Hal Roach for the "Our Gang series,
starting with Crazy House (1928). After featuring in 32 of the
series and a few features, she retired from the screen at the ripe old
age of 8. Her only brief comeback was as Rosie Kettle in Ma and Pa
Kettle Go to Town (1950). Today she lives in California, reportedly

THE SOCIAL SECRETARY (Fine Arts Film Co.
/Triangle Film Corp., US 1916)
Dir.: John Emerson; supervisor: D.W. Griffith; sc.:
John Emerson, Anita Loos; cast: Norma Talmadge, Kate Lester,
Helen Weer, Gladden James, Herbert Frank, Erich Von Stroheim, Nathaniel
Sack, Vivia Ogden; prima proiezione pubblica / released: 17.9.1916;
lunghezza originale / orig. length: 5 rls; 35mm, 3693ft., 54
(18 fps), George Eastman House. Didascalie in inglese / English intertitles.
corrispondere a quella delledizione originale. DR
Norma Talmadge is represented by one of her earliest features, made
for Triangle, rather than one of the more opulent full-dress productions
of her years of independent production in the 1920s. The fast and witty
Emerson-Loos script tells the story of beautiful Mayme, who is tired of
fighting off the advances of male bosses and so disguises herself as a
frump to work as social secretary to a socialite lady. Her employers
mildly dissolute son discovers her secret, and a love affair ensues, in
the course of which Mayme is able to reform the young man and save his
sister from a fortune hunter. Norma is enchanting both as frump and beauty,
and there is the added bonus of Erich von Stroheim in the role of a bespectacled
and disreputable paparazzo. Von Stroheim is also thought to have
acted as assistant director on the film.
A re-edited reissue was
released in 1924, but the print just restored by George Eastman House
appears to be the original Triangle version. DR
Norma Talmadge (1895-1957)
sorelle Talmadge: Constance era unattrice eccellente, e Norma era
commedia. Norma nacque a Niagara Falls, andò a scuola a Brooklyn
Social Secretary.
DR
The time is overdue for a major revaluation of the Talmadge sisters: Constance
was an excellent actress, and Norma a great one; and both had exceptional
dexterity and natural charm in comedy. Norma was born at Niagara Falls,
went to school in Brooklyn, and at 14 was posing for life-model lantern
slides for use in nickelodeons. She made her film debut at Vitagraph in
1910, and in the course of between 250 and 300 films became one of the
companys most prominent female stars. In 1916 she moved to California,
where she appeared in a number of films for Triangle, under the general
supervision of D.W. Griffith, including The Social Secretary. That
same year she married the producer Joseph M. Schenck, who was henceforth
to guide her career, setting up her own production company. Her last silent
film was The Woman Disputed (1928). After the critical and box-office
failure of her second sound film, Du Barry, Woman of Passion (1930),
she retired definitively from the screen, though she continued to work
for radio in the 1930s. DR
EN SØLVBRYLLUPSDAG / [NOZZE DARGENTO

Dir.: Lau Lauritzen; sc.: Aage Brodersen; ph.: Hugo

Olsen, Aage Bendixen; premiere: 20.4.1920, Palads, Copenhagen; 35mm, 340m.,
19 (16 fps); Danish Film Institute/Archive and Cinematheque. Didascalie
in danese / Danish intertitles.

The film is primarily a vehicle for the rotund Oscar Stribolt (1872-1927),
a highly popular variety artist who was Lau Lauritzens favourite
comic actor both at Nordisk and Palladium (one of his rare dramatic roles
was as a monk in Christensens Häxan). Olga Svendsen,
however, makes her mark. The stout couple awake on the morning of their
silver wedding, prepared for the worst which includes an early
morning brass band serenade. The ensuing row impels the lady to leave
home, whereupon a lawyer arrives to announce that the couple have inherited
a large legacy conditional upon their continuing marital happiness.
The husband sets off through the city in search of his errant wife, leaving
the lawyer (a memorable little performance by Lauritz Olsen) in possession
of a bottle of potent spirit. His peregrinations through the city expose
him to two aspects of the opposite sex a swimming pool where female
beauties are exposed as objects, and an angry suffragette meeting.

STAGE STRUCK / TEATROMANIA (Famous
Players-Lasky / Paramount, US 1925)
Dir.: Allan Dwan; sc.: Forrest Halsey; adapt.: Sylvia
La Varre; story: Frank R. Adams; ph.: George Webber; des.:
Van Nest Polglase; cast: Gloria Swanson, Lawrence Gray,
Gertrude Astor, Marguerite Evans, Ford Sterling, Carrie Scott,
Emil Hoch, Margery Whittington; prima proiezione pubblica / released:
16.11.1925; lunghezza originale / orig. length: 6691ft.; 35mm,
6434ft., 78 (22 fps), Technicolor sequences, George Eastman
House. Didascalie in inglese / English intertitles.
Forse a causa dellinsolita
A Motion Picture
interpretazioni di Lawrence Gray, nei panni del ragazzo di provincia;
attrezzato a teatro. Kevin Brownlow riferisce che durante la lavorazione
fu necessario effettuare una trasferta a New Martinsville, in West Virginia,
JBK
By 1925, when Stage Struck was produced, Gloria Swanson was
firmly established as an icon of glamour both on and off the screen, so
there was a certain logic in casting her in a deliberately unglamorous
role. She had already played a department store clerk in Allan Dwans
Manhandled the previous year; in Stage Struck she became
a waitress in a cheap diner, harboring romantic dreams of the short-order
cook in the same establishment, and longing to become an actress only
because the cook had a weakness for actresses. Such a role would not allow
Gloria to hide behind glamorous gowns or settings; she was forced to rely
on her comic talents. Fortunately, her comic talents were considerable.
Perhaps as a concession to Glorias fans, who would be expecting
to see their favorite elegantly coiffed and gowned, Dwan added a Technicolor
prologue depicting the waitress fantasy life: herself as a distinguished
actress, portraying a variety of dramatic, exotic roles. (The film also
boasted a Technicolor epilogue, depicting the far more down-to-earth happy
ending of the story. Were privileged to see both of these color
sequences, thanks to the gorgeous print preserved by George Eastman House.)
Whether because of Glorias unaccustomed dowdiness in the main body
of the film, or for some other reason, critics rejected Stage Struck
a reaction that is difficult to fathom today, when the film elicits
such a delighted reaction from audiences. Even more surprising, Gloria
apparently agreed with the critics. She told Motion Picture Classic
that it was "the worst work I have ever done and reportedly
tried to buy the negative from Paramount so that she could suppress the
film. Happily, she was unsuccessful.
In addition to Gloria Swanson,
Stage Struck offers engaging performances from Lawrence Gray as
the small-town boyfriend; from Gertrude Astor, one of Hollywoods
busiest golddiggers, as the visiting actress who temporarily turns his
head; and from comedy warhorse Ford Sterling as the showboat manager.
Kevin Brownlow reports that the production of the film entailed a location
trip to New Martinsville, West Virginia, where Dwan engaged an authentic
showboat and the services of its troupe. An article in Photoplay
documented the trip, during which the citizens of New Martinsville took
Gloria to their hearts. The leading man of the showboats stock company,
after watching her at work, concluded approvingly: "That gals
a trouper! JBK
Gloria Swanson (1899-1983)
e Teddy at the Throttle (1917). La trasformazione del suo personaggio
comincia più tardi, contemporaneamente allinterpretazione
di lungometraggi eleganti e fantasiosi come Male and Female (Maschio
e femmina; 1919), Why Change Your Wife? (Perché cambiate
moglie?; 1920) e Her Gilded Cage (La gabbia dorata;
e Stage Struck.
JBK
Perhaps its a measure of Gloria Swansons success in constructing
and maintaining her ultra-glamorous image that the thought of her as a
"funny lady seems a little jarring today. After all, she began
her film career in the mid-1910s in the short comedies of Essanay and,
later, Keystone. There she appeared with Wallace Beery, who became her
first husband in 1916, and with Bobby Vernon in comedies including The
Danger Girl (1916) and Teddy at the Throttle (1917). It was
only afterward that she began to transform her image in such stylish and
fanciful features as Male and Female (1919), Why Change Your
Wife? (1920), and Her Gilded Cage (1922). Her much-publicized
1925 marriage to the Marquis Henri de la Falaise de la Coudraye added
a European title to her general aura of sophistication. But underneath
the stylish trappings Gloria retained the comedic gifts that she had displayed
in her earliest films, and Allan Dwan, who directed her in a string of
features in the mid-1920s, was wise enough to make use of those gifts
in Manhandled (1924) and Stage Struck. Gloria was at the
peak of her career during these years, and after achieving a critical
high point with Sadie Thompson (1928) she gradually abandoned filmmaking
for business ventures in fashion and cosmetics. She did make occasional
return appearances before the camera, and one of them, in Billy Wilders
Sunset Boulevard, has come to be accepted as defining her entire
career. But to fully appreciate that career, we should remember that her
roots were, after all, in comedy. JBK

Flora Finch (1869-1940)
DR
Though Flora Finchs name is generally associated with that of John

London-born, she worked in the English theatre until 1907, when she appeared
in a number of Hepworth films. In 1908 she emigrated to the United States,
worked briefly at the Biograph studios, and in 1909 moved definitively
to the Vitagraph company. Her fierce, bony features and scrawny frame
delighted audiences in innumerable films, particularly those in which
she played rotund John Bunnys shrewish wife. The Bunny-Finch films
were directed with skill and understanding of the characters by George
D. Baker. Bunny died in 1915, and two years later Flora Finch established
her own production company, which appears to have had very little success.
Subsequently she appeared frequently in supporting character roles in
features: her final screen performance was a brief bit in George Cukors
The Women (1939). DR

ma fece poche apparizioni in parti secondarie in film minori come The
Woman God Changed (1921) e Loves Boomerang (1922).
Trascorse i suoi ultimi anni a Trinidad.

KB/BD
Refreshingly unsentimental, the two Hepworth girls, Alma Taylor

long tracking shots are exceptionally unusual for 1910. KB/BD

Institute/Archive and Cinematheque. Didascalie in danese / Danish intertitles.
In questagile
e deliziosa piccola farsa incentrata sulle baruffe coniugali, i signori
anni 20 e 30.) DR
Despite his phenomenal output (between 1913 and 1920 he directed
more than 100 films for Nordisk) Lau Lauritzen sustained a very high level
of pace and performance in his comedies. In this brisk and charming little
farce about marital mix-ups, Messrs. Storch and Sondergard are business
partners (the Expressionist-style first view of them at their desks is
memorable). Mr. Storch has a birthday, which everyone duly honours; but
Mr. Sondergard has forgotten his wedding anniversary, to the chagrin of
his wife. When Sondergard eventually remembers, however, his forgiving
wife sends him a bouquet with an affectionate message. Meanwhile, Mrs.
Storch sends a message to her husband, proposing a rendezvous for that
afternoon. Naturally, the message and the bouquet get mixed up, provoking
marital crises all round.

THE VAGABOND QUEEN (British International Pictures

from a story by Douglas Furber; ph.: Charles Rosher; ed.:

and conducted by John Reynders; sd.: RCA disc system; cast:

Television Archive. Didascalie in inglese / English intertitles.
guerre (sue erano le canzoni The Lambeth Walk e The Bells
of St. Marys).
Sally viene trascinata in Bolonia
Novello/Betty Balfour e, infine, The Vagabond Queen.
Widow (La vedova allegra), Moulin Rouge (id.). Lavorando quasi certamente
landamento distintamente musicale dellazione.
pittore, svolse unintensa attività drammatica, calcando ininterrottamente
Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone (La primavera romana della signora Stone).
Le sue prestazioni migliori sono quelle offerte in The Old Dark House
e in The Bride of Frankenstein (La moglie di Frankenstein) di James
(1953-1959). DR
This unparalleled essay in European absurdism was one of the most
regrettable casualties of the coming of sound. Released as a silent in
May 1929, it was re-issued with synchronized music and sound effects in
August 1930 but too late. Variety, reviewing the new version
on its London release, admitted that its production values (with fine
photography by Charles Rosher) were far superior to most British pictures,
yet mercilessly damned its chances: "Picture doesnt mean anything
in these talker days. Significantly, perhaps, the same page carried
a review of the Marx Brothers in Animal Crackers.
The film represents an extraordinary marriage of a native British
nonsense tradition with the sprightliness of Hungarian operetta. The story
is by Douglas Furber (1885-1961), one of the most prolific English writers
of revue and musical plays between the wars (his songs included "The
Lambeth Walk and "The Bells of St Marys). The story
is a merciless send-up of Ruritanian romance and in particular The
Prisoner of Zenda. Betty Balfour plays the dual role of Sally, maid-of-all-work
in a seedy London lodging house, and Princess Xonia of Bolonia, a revolution-prone
Balkan state. Sally is carried off to Bolonia to take the Princesss
place in the forthcoming coronation procession, at which a regicide is
confidently anticipated. Luck and nonsense naturally save the day.
The prolific Géza (von) Bolváry (1897-1961) began
directing in his native Hungary in 1920, but from 1923 to 1958 he mostly
worked in Germany. In 1928-9 he made a group of films in Britain or as
Anglo-German co-productions: these included the excellent The Ghost
Train (1927), Number 17 (1928), with Ivor Novello, Bright
Eyes (Champagner, 1929), which teamed Novello with Betty Balfour,
and finally The Vagabond Queen.
The musical score added to the film is of particular interest both
in the evolution of music from silent to sound cinema, and in the subsequent
progression of Bolvárys career. It was assigned to the composer-compiler-conductor
John Reynders, and was almost certainly prepared in close collaboration
with the director. Reynders was Londons best-known cinema compiler-conductor
of the silent film period. From its opening as a cinema in 1923 until
the end of the silent period, he was musical director of the Tivoli Theatre,
where he presented much-admired scores for the British premieres of
among numerous others Greed, Ben-Hur, The Merry
Widow, and Moulin Rouge. Subsequently he became a prolific composer
of sound film music. His score for The Vagabond Queen is brash
and energetic, and contributes very positively to the comedy, with its
own jokes and aural commentary. It is particularly interesting that the
film was actually extended by 1042 feet when the sound was added; the
orchestral score accentuates the distinctly musical rhythm of the action.
The creation of this novel comic balletic style may well have influenced
Bolvárys direct progression into film operetta, starting
with Zwei Herzen im 3/4 Takt, which was to exert a great influence
upon the development of German and Austrian musicals in the 1930s.
In addition to its star, the film boasts an excellent cast. Ernest
Thesiger (1879-1961) a favourite embroidery companion of the Dowager
Queen Mary, he practically qualifies as a "Funny Lady himself
has one of his most abandoned comedy roles as Lidoff the Bolonian
diplomat. Patrician by birth and originally a painter, Thesiger had an
unbroken theatrical career from 1909 to the end of his life, creating
among other roles that of the Dauphin in George Bernard Shaws St.
Joan. He made his first film appearance in 1916 and his last (in The
Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone) in 1961. His most memorable appearances
were in James Whales The Old Dark House and The Bride
of Frankenstein, though nowhere is he as extravagant as in The
Vagabond Queen. Glen Byam Shaw (1904-1986), the juvenile lead, made
his stage debut in 1923, and went on to become a distinguished Shakespearean
actor and director of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre (1953-1959).

Betty Balfour (1902-1978)
Cochran.
resterà a lungo associato.
diretta da Louis Mercanton, in Monte-Carlo (Montecarlo;
In Svezia,
diretta da Ragnar Hylten-Cavallius, interpretò Flickorna
Gyurkovics (Scusate signorina; 1926) e, in Germania, fu la protagonista
di Die Regimentstochter (1929) di Hans Behrendt. In America
girò un solo film, The Pearl of Love (1925), tratto dal
romanzo davventure The Pearl of Orrs Island di Harriet
DR
Betty Balfour was Britains best-loved screen star throughout the
1920s, mostly for her roles as plucky flower-girls, kitchen maids, and
other put-upon youngsters of Londons lowest quarters. She made her
stage debut in the West End at the Ambassadors Theatre in 1914,
apparently as a child performer in C.B. Cochrans revue Odds
and Ends. She was spotted by the director George Pearson, who determined
that "when the war was over I would find Betty Balfour and give her
an opportunity of proving to the world through the screen that she was
one of the greatest artists of the time. After trying her out in
a secondary role in Nothing Else Matters (1920), Pearson went on
to direct her in a dozen starring pictures, including the Squibs
series, with which she was always to be associated. In 1928 she starred
in Hitchcocks Champagne. In the later 1920s, Betty Balfour
enjoyed an international career unrivalled by any other English actress,
working In France with Louis Mercanton on Monte-Carlo (1925), La
petite bonne du Palace (1926), and Croquette (1927), and with
Marcel LHerbier in a dramatic role in Le Diable au coeur
(1927). In Sweden, Ragnar Hylten-Cavallius directed her in Flickorna
Gyurkovics (1926), and in Germany she starred in Hans Behrendts
Die Regimentstochter (1929). She made a single film in the United
States, The Pearl of Love (1925), adapted from Harriet Beecher
Stowes 1862 adventure novel The Pearl of Orrs Island.
Her career in sound films was said to have been restricted by her indomitable
cockney accent: the 8 films she made between 1930 and 1945 included a
musical remake of Squibs (1935), directed by Henry Edwards.

Clara Pontoppidan (Clara Wieth) (1883-1975)
DR
Born in Copenhagen, Clara Pontoppidan was admitted in 1892 to the ballet
school of the Royal Theatre. She worked briefly as a dancer, but went
on to study at the Royal Theatres Academy of Dramatic Art, and made
her debut as a legitimate actress in 1901. Supremely expressive, and with
a remarkable range, she was to remain a leading star of the Danish theatre
for the rest of her career: early parts which ensured her reputation were
Vendla in Wedekinds Spring Awakening, Camille in La Dame
aux Camélias, and Puck in A Midsummer Nights Dream
(1910), in an open-air production that was a sensation for her faun-like
characterisation. She made her film debut in 1910, and that same year
appeared for the first time with her frequent screen partner Valdemar
Psilander, in Dorian Gray portræt (The Picture of Dorian
Gray). From 1910 until 1922 she was one of the most active actresses in
both Danish and Swedish cinema, and made many films with Sjöström
and Stiller. Between 1911 and 1915 she generally appeared under her married
name of Clara Wieth: her husband at that time, Carlo Wieth (1885-1943),
regularly partnered her on stage, and also appeared with her in Dreyers
film Blade af Satans bog (Leaves From Satans Book; 1919-1920).
Schnedler-Sørensens free adaptation of Leo Falls operetta
A Dollar Princess (Vor tids dame; 1912), in which she is
charmingly partnered by Psilander, reveals a young actress as effective
in light comedy as in drama. After 1922 she made comparatively few film
appearances: her last recorded screen role was in Sven Methlings
Takt og tone i himmelsengen (How to Catch a Man), made in 1971
when she was nearing 90. Clara Pontoppidan can also be seen in this edition
of the Giornate in Dreyers newly rediscoverd and restored Der
var engang (Once Upon a Time; 1922). DR

Destiny, or the Soul of a Woman (1915).
una parte in Madonna of the Streets (La Madonna della strada;
Way Out West (I fanciulli
Continuò a
lavorare nel cinema fino al 1950. DR
A Ziegfeld Girl, Vivian Oakland made her screen debut as "Beauty,
the symbolic temptation flaunted before a candidate for priesthood, in
Edwin Carewes portentous melodrama Destiny, or the Soul of a
Woman (1915). She was not tempted back into films for 9 years, when
Carewe recruited her for Madonna of the Streets (1924). After this
she continued to play supporting roles in features, but fairly regularly
throughout her career found an outlet for her comic temperament in 2-reelers.
She partnered Charley Chase in 3 films, appeared in 6 Laurel and Hardy
pictures, including Way Out West (1937), and between 1927 and 1948
played in 20 shorts with Edgar Kennedy, generally as his wife. She continued
in films until 1950. DR
YEARS TO COME (Hal Roach / Pathe Exchange,
Inc., 1922)
Dir.: Charles Parrott [Charley Chase]; prod.: Hal Roach;
cast: Harry (Snub) Pollard, Marie Mosquini, Noah Young;
16mm, 77m., 820" (20 fps), The Lobster Collection. Didascalie
in inglese / English intertitles.
affidato a nerborute poliziotte.

This startling short is a vision of a future world in which gender
roles are reversed, and even the job of traffic cop is assigned to stalwart
women. In the most surprising scene, woman is seen as the sexual aggressor,
attempting to seduce the wilting, pinafored Snub with drink and other
enticements. Happily, Snub wakes to discover that the nightmare was only
a dream. DR
Marie Mosquini (1899-1983)
Questa bella e spiritosa brunetta è oggi praticamente dimenticata,
ma negli anni 20 era molto ambita dai comici come partner. Pare
Comedies accanto a Harry (Snub) Pollard. In aggiunta, lavorò sporadicamente
con Stan Laurel (Hoot Mon!, 1919; Save the Ship, 1923) e
con Charley Chase (Young Oldfield, 1924; Is Marriage the Bunk?,
1925; Fighting Fluid, 1925); nel 1923-24 apparve in un gruppo di
Will Rogers Comedies.
i suoi colleghi chiaramente apprezzavano molto perché esaltava,
soli tre film: a noi piace ricordarla come Madame Gobin in 7th Heaven
(Settimo cielo; 1927).
DR
The witty, beautiful brunette Marie Mosquini is practically forgotten
today; but she was a partner much sought after by the comedians of the
1920s. She seems to have started her career at the Roach studios, where
most of her work was to be done, and where her first recorded appearance
was with the Swiss-Italian comedian Toto (Armando Novello, 1888-1938;
not to be confused with his later and more famous namesake) in The
Movie Dummy (1918). Her principal work at Rolin, however, was as partner
to Harry (Snub) Pollard, with whom she made numerous 1- and 2-reelers
between 1919 and 1923. In addition, she worked occasionally alongside
Stan Laurel (Hoot Mon!, 1919; Save the Ship‡1923), Charley
Chase (Young Oldfield, 1924; Is Marriage the Bunk?, 1925;
Fighting Fluid, 1925); and in 1923-24 appeared in a group of Will
Rogers comedies. Another sparkling partner, in several comedies with Pollard
or Eddie Boland, was Ernie Morrison (Sunshine Sammy, 1912-1989), the remarkable
black boy comic.
Mosquinis comedy is mostly reactive, and her male partners
clearly valued her most as a fast, vivacious foil to their own work. In
1926 she moved into feature roles, but after only three films her career
appears to have ended: from this period she is best remembered as Madame
Gobin in 7th Heaven (1927). Years to Come, though it does
not give her a large role, enables her to show her skill in two contrasting
characterisations. DR
