Accompagnamento musicale di / Musical accompaniment by Teho Teardo. / Made in 1926, the film is set in a lunatic asylum and tells a familiar tale of disappointed love, madness, and incarceration. Surprisingly modern, it is astonishing both for its rapid and dynamic montage and for the expressiveness of the actors. The accompanying musical score for the Giornate live performance has been composed and will be perfomed by Teho Teardo. Far from attempting to recreate atmospheres relevant to Japan of the 1920s, he has sought a parallel that is emotive rather than philologically chronological, seeking distinctively contemporary resonances, some deriving from digital synthesis, others from traditional instruments, such as strings, flute, and piano, in a sustained confrontation of electronic and acoustic, contemporary and traditional. To describe in an authentic way sentiments that are still wholly relevant, sounds of today are created, with the music and instruments which belong to our present: computer, sampler, mixer, synthesisers. Electronic music thus becomes a sincere means of writing and narration to follow and commentate images that are distant in time and space. Mauro Teho Teardo has long been involved with electronic music making. His earliest album, produced in 1985 when he was 19, associated him with noted members of the English avant-garde. Last year Teardo created the soundtracks for Denti, the latest film by Oscar-winner Gabriele Salvatores. Currently he is working with Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Lydia Lunch, Gabriele Salvatores and other artists on a an album of poems by Pier Paolo Pasolini.
