Program Notes |
In 1995 New Zealanders were thrilled to see silent footage of their countryman Richard Pearse's 1903 airplane flight that anticipated the American Wright brothers' flight by 6 months (Costa Botes' and Peter Jackson's Forgotten Silver). The Expedição Brasileira is even more astonishing. It documents an obscure but audacious Brazilian aeronautical achievement of 1916 which predates the American putative moon landing by 53 years. Made to publicize Brazil's technical achievements under President Venceslau Brás Pereira Gomes, it is likely the film was suppressed because of the expedition's unfortunate conclusion. - DAN FULLER |
