Program Notes |
Number 121 in Méliès’ Star Film catalogue, this very primitive and very funny film takes up the routine, known in other films, of the “fin-de-siècle barber”. The copy, discovered in the Paris region more than 10 years ago, was so stuck together at the centre that two attempts at chemical separation failed. Not until 2006 did Lobster and PresTech Film Laboratories Limited, London, decide on a final attempt to unstick these 3 metres of images, and following a very determined digital restoration (a true last-minute rescue), after 110 years the film can once again be seen with its head on its shoulders. – SERGE BROMBERG |
