Program Notes
The Dancer is a trick film using double exposure and two masks allowing Megan Mullins to play both the hesitant dancing student on the left and the more accomplished dancer in the mirror on the right. Jennifer Hart, who wrote and photographed The Dancer, also led the heroic effort to color it by hand, in which two students spent 12 hours coloring just 28 seconds of film. The fifteen members of Wisconsin Bioscope are proud to accomplish all phases of film-making in the most elemental way possible, not only by writing, directing, acting, filming, and editing their films, but also by developing, printing, and toning them by hand. After all, cinema is a craft, not an industry. – DAN FULLER
