| Program Notes |
| At the beginning of the 20th century (as at the beginning of the 21st) Etna erupted, throwing off lava, ash and cinders. Just as today this is one of the most fascinating events for television, so a century ago the volcano's eruptions were captured by the cinema. Aldo Bernardini records some five Eruptions of Etna between 1909 and 1911, (as well as two of Vesuvius, both in 1906). The version in the programme, tinted and toned, shows the formation of a new crater and the efforts of the local population to divert the lava. - LJ |
