Program Notes |
After her husband's death, Kyoko is obliged to leave her baby Reiko and return to her parents' home. Her husband's father, Junzo, leaves the city and retires to the country with his granddaughter Reiko. Kyoko, who has now dedicated herself to a religious life, happens to come to the church in the village where Junzo and Reiko live. Reiko finally finds her real mother. Torajiro Saito was basically a comedy director. His nonsensical and absurd comedies were highly appreciated in the late 1920s and 30s, but very few of his films survive. A rare example of a non-comic film by Saito, this is an adaptation of a girls' novel that somewhat belongs to the "mother film" genre (hahamono eiga). Only a small portion of the film displays Saito's usual comedy touch. Mitsuko Takao, who plays the role of Reiko, was one of the oldest stars in Shochiku's child actor/actress unit. - HK
