| Based on a stage illusion of the growing playing cards, the film goes one better when the characters on the royal cards come to life. The more modest stage version of the trick had been performed at Méliès' Théàtre Robert-Houdin by Gaston Velle, who later became a film-maker in his own right at the Pathé studios, specialising in Méliès-style trick films. |
