Helen Gardner (1884-1968) è stata la prima attrice negli Stati Uniti ad avere una propria compagnia di produzione ed una delle prime registe cinematografiche. Cominciò a recitare alla Vitagraph nel 1910; nel 1924 aveva fatto 55 film. Nel 1912 apr¦ un proprio stabilimento a Tappan, New York, e dopo aver ingaggiato come sceneggiatore e regista il suo amante, Charles L. Gaskill, produsse 11 film prima di chiudere i battenti nel 1914. A Sister to Carmen è la sua terza produzione. Il soggetto riprende quello della Carmen, con tanto di triangolo amoroso, contrabbandieri e false identità. Helen Gardner interpreta Margo, ora vamp, ora donna decisa, ora donna travestita da uomo. La copia è stata restaurata dalla nipote di Helen Gardner, Dorin Schumacher, con il sostegno dell’organizzazione delle donne newyorkesi attive nel settore cinematografico e televisivo. —DS
Helen Gardner (1884-1968) was the first U.S. star to have her own production company and one of the earliest women directors. Starting as a Vitagraph player in 1910, she made 55 films from 1910 to 1924. She formed her company in 1912, established a studio in Tappan, New York, hired her lover, Charles L. Gaskill as her scenarist and director, and produced 11 films before closing her company in 1914. A Sister to Carmen was the third film she produced. A variant on the Carmen story, it contains a love triangle, smugglers, and mistaken identities. Helen Gardner plays Margo, alternately a vamp, a strong woman, and a woman disguised as a man. This print has been restored by Helen Gardner's granddaughter, Dorin Schumacher, with partial support from a grant from The Women’s Film Preservation Fund of New York Women in Film and Television. —DS
