Scoperto l’anno scorso in Norvegia, A Reckless Romeo è stato per varie ragioni un film misterioso. Quante comiche con questo titolo sono state effettivamente girate da Arbuckle? Buster Keaton vi recita o no? Grazie al ritrovamento del film possiamo finalmente rispondere a tali quesiti. Fatty ha bevuto troppo e per rabbonire l’adirata moglie e la suocera decide di portarle al parco. Qui si mette a corteggiare una bella ragazza finendo col prendere un sacco di botte dal fidanzato di lei. Per giustificare l’occhio pesto con cui torna a casa, si inventa una lunga storia. Tutto procede bene finché non va con la famiglia a passare una bella serata al cinema. Scopre così che quanto è veramente successo nel parco è stato ripreso da un intraprendente operatore e viene ora sciorinato davanti agli occhi inorriditi di moglie e suocera. Ma Keaton c’è o non c’è? Non vi resta che vedere il film (e leggere l’articolo pubblicato in proposito da Griffithiana 65). -BB
Discovered last year in Norway, A Reckless Romeo has been something of a mystery picture for various reasons. How many films by this title did Arbuckle actually make? Does Buster Keaton play in it or not? How nice to find the film so the matter can be settled at last! Fatty is a bibulous husband, who, to square himself with an irate wife and mother-in-law, plans a day's outing in the park. Here he flirts with a pretty girl and as a result he is badly beaten up by the girl's sweetheart. Returning home with a black eye he spins a yarn to explain how he got it. All is well until he brings his family to the cinema for a pleasant evening, only to find that what really happened in the park has been caught by an energetic newsreel cameraman and is being unreeled before the horrified eyes of his wife and his mother-in-law. The Cook è stato così spesso confuso con The Rough House che è una bella soddisfazione poter finalmente presentare il prodotto genuino. È stato di recente ritrovato in Norvegia insieme con A Reckless Romeo. Fatty è lo chef del Bull Pup Café e Keaton il cameriere rompiscatole. Al St. John, un malvivente che tenta una rapina al locale, si incapriccia della cassiera Alice Lake e la insegue sulle montagne russe, ma Luke, il cane di Fatty, gli dà una caccia spietata e incessante. I pezzi forti sono rappresentati dalla danza orientale di Fatty (agghindato con gli utensili da cucina, comincia come Salomè - vediamo persino la testa mozzata - e finisce alla maniera di Cleopatra, uccidendosi con delle vipere) e da una bella scena improvvisata con Fatty e Buster che ci mostrano i vari modi di mangiare gli spaghetti. -BB
The Cook has so often been confused with The Rough House that it is especially gratifying to be able to present the genuine article. It was recently found in Norway, together with A Reckless Romeo. Fatty is a chef at the Bull Pup Café and Keaton a pest waiter. Al St. John, a holdup man trying to rob the café, takes a fancy to Alice Lake, the cashier, whom he pursues on a roller coaster; but he is constantly and ferociously being chased by Fatty’s dog "Luke". Highlights are Fatty’s Oriental dance - dressed up in kitchen utensils, he starts as Salome (we even see the severed head) but ends as Cleopatra, killing himself with vipers - and a nice, casual scene where Fatty and Buster show us various ways of eating spaghetti. -BB
