Conversando con David Wyatt, Jean Darling ricorda quando lavorava a Hollywood negli ultimi giorni del muto e nella fase di transizione al sonoro, e sorpenderà il pubblico esibendosi tra l’altro nella rarità musicale “The Picture Palace Queen”, dal musical teatrale del 1914 The Cinema Star. Si tratta dell’adattamento inglese dell’operetta originale tedesca Die Kino-Königin (1913) di Georg Okonkowski e Julius Freund, con musica di Jean Gilbert (al secolo Max Winterfeld, 1879-1942). Una versione americana, The Queen of the Movies, con numeri aggiunti di Irving Berlin, debuttò a New York il 12 gennaio 1914. La prima dell’adattamento londinese di Jack Hulbert si tenne il 4 giugno 1914, ma in seguito allo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale lo spettacolo fu sospeso; successivamente tuttavia fu portato in tournée con grande successo per la sua star, Dorothy Ward. – David Robinson
Jean Darling, in conversation with David Wyatt, recalls further memories of working in Hollywood in the last days of the silent era and the change-over to sound. Among other surprises, she will also sing a musical rarity, “The Picture Palace Queen”, from the 1914 stage musical The Cinema Star. This was the English adaptation of the original German operetta Die Kino-Königin (1913) by Georg Okonkowski and Julius Freund, with music by Jean Gilbert (né Max Winterfeld, 1879-1942). An American version, The Queen of the Movies, with additional numbers by Irving Berlin, opened in New York on 12 January 1914. The London adaptation by Jack Hulbert opened on 4 June 1914 but closed following the outbreak of the First World War, though it later toured with great success for its star, Dorothy Ward. – David Robinson
