THE DANCER (Wisconsin Bioscope,
US 2004)
Re./dir: David Olson; prod: Dan Fuller; scen., f./ph.:
Jennifer Hart; cast: Megan Mullins; 35mm, 70 ft., 1’10” (16 fps),
Communication Arts Department, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Didascalie in inglese / English intertitles.
e virandoli a mano.
The Dancer is a trick
film using double exposure and two masks allowing Megan Mullins to play
both the hesitant dancing student on the left and the more accomplished
dancer in the mirror on the right. Jennifer Hart, who wrote and photographed
The Dancer, also led the heroic effort to color it by hand, in
which two students spent 12 hours coloring just 28 seconds of film. The
fifteen members of Wisconsin Bioscope are proud to accomplish all phases
of film-making in the most elemental way possible, not only by writing,
directing, acting, filming, and editing their films, but also by developing,
printing, and toning them by hand. After all, cinema is a craft, not an
industry. – Dan Fuller
A LOVE STORY (Maria Ellingsen, US 2005)

Donald Sosin; cast: Serenity Stone, Senya Hawkins, Matt Rector,
Brett Anderson; DVD, 7’, Maria Ellingsen.
Didascale in inglese / English intertitles.
in produzione video tenutosi alla Maharishi University of Management:
– David Robinson
A
20th-century fable, set in 1930s small-town America and somewhat conflating
the tales of Cupid and Narcissus. The film was the outcome of a class
in video production at the Maharishi University of Management: its Norwegian
director, Maria Ellingsen, explains that “Love is a timeless theme –
but the timing isn’t always right.”– David Robinson
The film has a synchronized
soundtrack, recorded by the composer Donald Sosin, but for the Giornate
performance Mr. Sosin will perform the accompaniment live.

Evan Foster; cast: Peter Marinucci, Travis Bird, Katie Weber, Megan
Mullins; 35mm, 250 ft., 4’10” (16 fps), Communication Arts Department,

È dal 1999 che gli studenti
della University of Wisconsin realizzano film muti sotto l’egida
della Wisconsin Bioscope Company, uno studio cinematografico fittizio
simile a quelli dell’epoca antecedente la prima guerra mondiale. I risultati
The
Vitagraph del 1907 riprodotta in The Parade’s Gone By di Kevin
Brownlow.
le battute, mentre in sottofondo una registrazione di “What Can You Mach?
S’is America” (1929) eseguita dalla Alexander Oishanetsky Orchestra assicurava
ritmo ed atmosfera. – Dan Fuller
Since 1999, University
of Wisconsin students have made silent films as the Wisconsin Bioscope
Company, a fictitious film studio from before the First World War, whose
productions have been screened at the Giornate in 2000 and 2004. The
Starving Artist was directly inspired by a photograph of a 1907 Vitagraph
production reproduced in Kevin Brownlow’s The Parade’s Gone By.
The film was shot outdoors in September 2004 with a hand-cranked Universal
camera made in Chicago in 1924 and was lit by reflected sunlight. David
Olson, the director, guided the actors with narration and cues during
the performance, while in the background a recording of the Alexander
Oishanetsky Orchestra’s “What Can You Mach? S’is America” (1929) played
to provide rhythm and atmosphere. – Dan Fuller
THE UNUSUAL INVENTIONS OF HENRY CAVENDISH (RTE/Filmbase/Restoration
Film, IE 2005)
Re./dir., f./ph: Andrew Legge; prod: Katie Lincoln; scen:
Isaac Cavendish, Herbert Carlson; mont./ed: Conor McMahon; scg./des:
Ger Clancy; cost: Cathy Young; mus: Jürgen Simpson; cast:
Fiona O’Shaughnessy (Catherine Palmerston), Hugh O’Connor (Henry Cavendish),
Frank Kelly (Thomas Palmerston), Shaun Boylan (Salacious Sommerfeld Smythe);
35mm, 1440 ft., 16’ (25 fps), Andrew Legge.
Didascalie in inglese / English intertitles.
grazie a discrete soluzioni digitali.
– David Robinson
Andrew Legge’s intrepid
incursion into the world of silent film affords an extraordinarily rich
and concentrated experience. An Irish tale of a young inventor in Victorian
Dublin, who, thanks to his time machine, undoes the villainies of the
cad who has stolen the woman he loves (the kind of man who hangs a Union
Jack in his drawing room), it lightly brushes a range of visual and literary
references – Verne, Keaton, The Thief of Bagdad, Feuillade,
Frankenstein, H.G. Wells. Most striking is the film’s visual integrity
and beauty: scenes of Dublin shot by Lumière cameramen in 1897 and still
photographs from the same era are, by discreet digital means, seamlessly
combined with the new dramatic material. Remarkably, most of the film
was originally shot on a clockwork 16mm Russian “Krasnogorsk” camera,
partly home-processed by Legge himself, and blown up on a digital intermediate
to 35mm. The actors – notably Hugh O’Connor, with his Buster melancholy,
and the graceful Fiona O’Shaughnessy – achieve an authentic language
of silent performance. To guide and assist them Legge had the composer
Jürgen Simpson on set, accompanying the shooting on piano. – David
Robinson
/ For the Giornate performance Jürgen Simpson’s piano score will be
performed live by Mauro Colombis.
