Jerry the Tyke, umorale creatura
La serie Jerry the Tyke, ora preservata dal National Screen and
Orchestra of Wales.
episodi. Dave Berry
Jerry the Tyke, the mercurial
animated pooch who emerged from decades in obscurity to prove a hit with
Sacile delegates last year, returns to the festival in 10 more short films
in 2003.
Jerry, mischievous, dishonest, and often downright venal, was the antithesis
of many of his cosy animated peers. He was a feature of Pathé
Pictorial screen magazines from 1925 to 1927 after replacing the great
Felix the Cat, and survived for more than 40 episodes, making him the
most prolific of all Britains animated creatures on screen in the
silent movie period.
The mutt was created by two former Cardiff projectionists, animator
Sid Griffiths and photographer Bert Bilby and Griffiths is now
hailed as the father of Welsh animation, which has flourished since the
late 1980s. The Jerry films, a judicious blend of live-action and
animation, worked compelling and playful variations on the Felix the
Cat films while paying homage to them in form and content.
The episodes, now being preserved by the National Screen and Sound
Archive of Wales in partnership with British Pathe, doubtless gained much
through the contributions from late 1925 or early 1926 of
experienced animator Brian White, who previously worked on the New Era
cartoon movies featuring G.E. Studdys famous canine Bonzo. Yet Griffiths
imput was the most crucial to Jerrys development, and unlike Felixs
creator Otto Messmer, who shunned appearances in his films, Sid appeared
in many of the Jerry episodes, interacting amusingly and often
abrasively with his demanding and often irascible protégé.
Rediscovery of the films has allowed Jerry to make a significant
recent impact, and in a separate initiative BBC Wales has digitized three
of the films already screened on BBC 2W, the Welsh digital service, with
specially commissioned music from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
The composer John Rea has now created scores for 10 further episodes awaiting
transmission. Dave Berry
