A Blackburn, nel Lancashire, fu un tale successo 99 anni fa che la Sheffield Photo Company ne fece un proprio remake quattro anni più tardi. Diving Lucy si rivelò ancora vincente quando fu presentato, qualche anno fa, alle Giornate nella collezione Mitchell and Kenyon del Cinema Museum. Quest’anno, con la presenza di entrambe le versioni, possiamo raddoppiare il divertimento.
It was such a big laugh in Blackburn, Lancashire, 99 years ago, that the Sheffield Photo Company did its own remake of it 4 years later. Diving Lucy still proved a hit when it was shown in the Giornate a few years ago, in the Cinema Museum’s Mitchell and Kenyon collection. This year we can double the fun, with both versions.

A duck farmer enters into his work with excessive enthusiasm and amour for his birds. Guests should be warned that this film — whose production provenance and even nationality cannot be identified — is definitely X-rated, and not recommended for refined sensibilities or those with finer feelings for the welfare of our feathered friends.

Lilly, figlia di una giovane vedova, durante una passeggiata in campagna è colta da malore dopo aver colto dei funghi avvelenati. L’intervento del medico del paese salva al bambina e accende il suo amore per la giovane madre. Questa quando riceve una lettera con la proposta di matrimonio è piuttosto riluttante e decide di gettare la lettera e il fiore ricevuto in omaggio. Sarà Lilly con un piccolo stratagemma a convincere la madre. — CD
During a walk in the country, Lilly, the daughter of a young widow, falls ill after eating a toadstool. The child is saved by the intervention of the country doctor, who is fired with love for the young mother. When she receives a letter with a proposal of marriage she is somewhat reluctant, and decides to throw away both the letter and the flowers which accompany it. It remains for Lilly to convince her mother through a little stratagem. — CD

A due settimane dallÌinizio del festival, questa deliziosa comica con Paul Parrott era indicata nelle bozze del presente catalogo come una produzione di Hal Roach non identificata. Il sempre vigile Steve Massa ha perŽ letto sul sito delle Giornate le poche righe di trama da noi fornite e, poich» gli suonavano familiari, si À subito messo a fare una ricerca, trovando sul Moving Picture World (4/7/1923) la seguente recensione:
ÏTHE SMILE WINS (Comica Path», un rullo)
Il regista George Jeske ha usato un tema non nuovo in questa comica da un rullo con Paul Parrott. Un ostinato rappresentante di libri tenta di venderli a un cliente particolarmente ostico. Il tema À tuttavia abilmente sviluppato e gli spettatatori, specie i fan di Paul Parrott, ne saranno abbastanza soddisfatti. Ò C.S.S.Ó
L’identificazione pare dunque certa, anche se gli spettatori del XXI secolo troverannno il film più che soddisfacente. George Jeske (1891-1951) ha lavorato come regista di film comici per un breve periodo, negli anni tra il 1923 e il 1926, dirigendo soprattutto Stan Laurel. Hal Roach ha ripreso il titolo The Smile Wins per unÌaltra sua produzione del 1927 diretta da Robert F. McGowan. – DR

Two weeks before the Giornate, with the festival catalogue already in proof, this delicious Paul Parrott comedy was listed as ÏUnidentified Hal Roach ComedyÓ. Luckily, just in time, the ever-vigilant Steve Massa spotted it on the web-site. ÏIt seemed a bit familiar to meÓ, he wrote, Ïso I dug around in my material and turned up this review from the 4 /7/ 1923 issue of Moving Picture World:
ÏTHE SMILE WINS (Pathe - Comedy - One Reel)
Director George Jeske has employed an oft-used theme in this single reel comedy starring Paul Parrott. A persistent book-agent attempts to sell a particularly hard customer. Considerable ingenuity has been shown in working out the theme, however, and it will afford average enjoyment for motion picture audiences, particularly those who are Paul Parrott fans. Ò C.S.S.Ó
The identification seems conclusive – though to a 21st century audience the ÏenjoymentÓ seems definitely more than just average. The director George Jeske (1891-1951) had a brief career as a director of comedy between 1923 and 1926, mostly working with Stan Laurel. Hal Roach re-used the title for a 1927 Hal Roach comedy, directed by Robert F. McGowan. – DR
