Programma Buster Keaton / A Buster Keaton Programme
a cura della Lobster Films / presented by Lobster Films
Uno dei film, His
This remarkable collection of outstanding prints and restorations of early
Buster Keaton shorts will shortly be made available by Lobster Films on
DVD. Meanwhile the Giornate takes this opportunity to show them on the
big screen. One of the films, His Wedding Night, was long supposed to
be definitively lost until it reappeared at the Giornate of 1987. Hard
Luck, one of the great long-lost moments of comic cinema, is finally restored
to the screen. In the preparation of this restoration, Lobster wish to
(Rome), Narodni Filmovy Archiv (Prague), Filmmuseum (Amsterdam), and David
Shepard (USA).
HIS WEDDING NIGHT (Comicque Film Corporation / Paramount Famous Players-Lasky,
US 1917)
Dir., sc.: Roscoe Arbuckle; prod.: Joseph M. Schenck; story: Joe Roach;
sc.ed.: Herbert Warren; ph.: George Peters; cast: Roscoe (Fatty) Arbuckle,
Buster Keaton, Al St. John, Alice Mann, Arthur Earle, Jimmy Bryant, Josephine
Stephens, Joseph Keaton(?); prima proiezione / released 20.8.1917; video,

/In a drugstore Al
and Roscoe are rivals for Alice. Roscoe slings melons and operates the
gas pump. Buster delivers a wedding gown for Alice, begins modelling it,
is mistaken for Alice, and is kidnapped by Al. This print was made from
the only surviving elements, in the Narodni Filmovy Archiv of Prague.

HARD LUCK (Comique Film Company / Metro, US 1921)
Dir., sc.: Buster Keaton, Eddie Cline; prod.: Joseph M. Schenck; ph.:
Elgin Lessley; cast: Buster Keaton, Virginia Fox, Joe Roberts, Bull Montana;
prima proiezione / released 16.3.1921; video, 22'27", Lobster Films.
Didascalie in francese / French intertitles.
In particolare
considerato perduto allorché Eleanor Keaton e Jeffrey Vance (in
Lloyd per Haunted Spooks (1920) e Never Weaken (1921).
DR
This restoration, constituted from elements from various sources, shows
the film in its entirety, from first to last image, for the first time
since its original release. In particular it is now possible to appreciate
the opening, the milieu (the scene with the pack of dogs), and above all
the ending, which has until now remained one of the mythical unseen highlights
of cinema. It was still missing when Eleanor Keaton and Jeffrey Vance
(in Buster Keaton Remembered, 2001) described the film: "Hard Luck
was Busters personal favourite of his silent shorts, not because
he thought it better than the rest but because the film contained the
greatest laugh-getting sequence of any of his pictures
In the film,
Buster loses his job and his girl. Down on his luck, he tries to commit
suicide. All of his inept attempts to do away with himself meet with failure.
These hilarious suicide-attempt gags are similar to those Harold Lloyd
did in his comedy shorts Haunted Spooks (1920) and Never Weaken (1921).
The second half of the film finds Buster hired by the local zoo to capture
the one animal they do not have: an armadillo. [The films Italian
title in fact was Nel paese degli armadilli, which translates as In
the Land of the Armadillos.] Needless to say, he fails, and he is
also unsuccessful as a fisherman and horseman. The aforementioned hilarious
sequence comes at the end: rejected by Virginia Fox, Buster climbs up
to the high-diving platform of an open-air swimming pool. On the platform
he poses and struts for the benefit of the girls lounging around the pool.
He then performs a great swan dive and misses the pool completely. Landing
on the cement walk next to the pool, he leaves a large hole in the pavement.
The scene fades and is followed by a title Years later. The
scene fades back to the abandoned pool, the hole still visible. Buster
emerges from it, dressed in Oriental clothes, followed by his Chinese
wife and two children. Unfortunately this sequence was not among the footage
uncovered for the films reconstitution [in 1987], and only still
photographs from the scene are known to survive [sic]". DR
OUT WEST (Comicque Film Corporation / Paramount-Arbuckle / Famous

DAY DREAMS (Buster Keaton Productions / First National, US 1922)
Dir., sc.: Buster Keaton, Eddie Cline; prod.: Joseph M. Schenck; ph.:
Elgin Lessley; tech. dir.: Fred Gabourie; cast: Buster Keaton, Renée
Adorée, Joe Keaton, Joe Roberts, Eddie Cline; prima proiezione
/ released Sept. 1922; video, 22'25", imbibizione / tinted, Lobster
Films. Didascalie in francese / French intertitles.
David Robinson, Buster Keaton (1969)
Copy restored from pre-existing elements and two original nitrate prints.
Until now, copies have been so incomplete that it has been difficult to
assess what is perhaps Keatons most elaborate attempt to contrast
and interweave dream and reality.
"The framing devices are the letters which Buster writes to his girl,
whom he has left in order to prove himself worthy of her. He writes that
he is cleaning up on Wall Street. She dreams of an elegant
wizard of the ticker-tape; the reality is a street-cleaner. He writes
that he is an actor. She imagines a Hamlet Buster; the fact is that he
is an extra having terrible trouble with his spear and finally getting
thrown out of the theatre
The finale is ... memorable. Buster leaps
from the jetty on to a ferryboat only to find that it is not as
he had thought going out, but coming in. He therefore escapes from a window
and on to the great paddle-wheel which begins to move round and round.
To keep from going under the water, he must keep going round it like a
mouse in a treadmill, endlessly."

THE LOVE NEST (Buster Keaton Productions / Associated First National,
US 1923)
Dir., sc.: Buster Keaton; prod.: Joseph M. Schenck; ph.: Elgin Lessley;
tech. dir.: Fred Gabourie; cast: Buster Keaton, Joe Roberts, Virginia
Fox; prima proiezione / released March 1923; video, 22'33", imbibizione
/ tinted, Lobster Films. Sottotitoli in francese / French subtitles.
la nave sulla scialuppa The Little Love Nest.
The
come unico regista e sceneggiatore.
(Eleanor Keaton e Jeffrey Vance, Buster Keaton Remembered, 2001)
DR
"Rejected by his girl-friend (Virginia Fox), Buster resolves to set
sail alone in his little boat, named Cupid. Days later he is exhausted
and starving, hopelessly adrift at sea. He is picked up by a whaling ship
named The Love Nest, whose captain (Joe Roberts) punishes minor offenses
among his crew by throwing them permanently overboard. Buster quickly
becomes the last surviving mate, eventually abandoning ship on its lifeboat,
The Little Love Nest. His adventures on the high seas prove to be just
a dream, and the film ends with Buster awakened in his little boat, still
tied to the dock. The Love Nest has the distinction of being the only
film in which Buster took sole writing and directing credit. It was also
his last two-reel silent comedy; during the production of this film, Joe
Schenck told Buster to start making feature films." (Eleanor Keaton
and Jeffrey Vance, Buster Keaton Remembered, 2001)
For many years believed lost, the film is here newly restored from two
nitrate prints of the period, with original tinting. A famous still from
this film is frequently mistaken for an image for The Navigator.

MOONSHINE (Comicque Film Corporation / Paramount-Arbuckle / Famous Players-Lasky,

COMICQUE vs. COMIQUE
della Library of Congress di The Butcher Boy (1917), Coney Island (1917),
His Wedding Night (1918), Oh, Doctor! (1917), e The Rough House (1917),
Film Corporation. SEE Comicque Film Corporation". Inoltre in alcune
E fu certamente questultima versione quella definitivamente addottata
There is some
uncertainty about the designation of Arbuckles production company,
whose name is found alternatively as "Comicque" and "Comique".
Raymond Rohauer, who worked extensively with Keaton in the comedians
later years, believed it was the former, and this seems to be borne out
by the Library of Congress copyright entries for The Butcher Boy (1917),
Coney Island (1917), His Wedding Night (1918), Oh, Doctor! (1917), and
The Rough House (1917), as well as by the index to the published catalogue
of Library of Congress copyright entries. The index moreover includes
the cross-reference "Comique Film Corporation. SEE Comicque Film
Corporation". However, in some individual LoC catalogue entries for
the Arbuckle films the word appears as "Comique". This was certainly
the spelling adopted by Keaton for his own "Comique" production
company in 1921-22. DR
CAPTURED ON FILM: THE TRUE STORY OF MARION DAVIES (Timeline Films,
in association with UCLA Film and Television Archive, US 2001)
Dir.: Hugh Munro Neely; Un film di / A Film by Hugh Munro Neely, Elaina
B. Archer; pres.: Hugh M. Hefner, in association with Turner Classic Movies;
prod.: Elaina B. Archer; narr.: Charlize Theron; Betacam SP (Pal), 64',
Timeline Films. Versione originale in inglese / Original version in English.
Basinger, Cari Beauchamp, Charles Champlin, lattrice Virginia Madsen
e altri.
Cardboard Lover (1928), The Patsy (1928), When Knighthood Was in Flower

Captured on Film: The True Story of Marion Davies is a new documentary
about the legendary actress whose career has been overshadowed by her
famous love affair with newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Narrated
by actress Charlize Theron, the film includes interviews with Fred Lawrence
Guiles (Daviess biographer), Kevin Brownlow, Jeanine Basinger, Cari
Beauchamp, Charles Champlin, actress Virginia Madsen, and others. Firsthand
accounts of events in Daviess life are shared by Carl Roup, a studio
newspaper boy who was chosen by Davies to appear as an extra in The Red
Mill (1927); Daviess friends, including actress Constance Moore
and King Vidors daughter, Belinda Vidor Holiday; and LIFE magazine
correspondent Stanley Flink, who taped interviews with Davies in 1951,
excerpts from which are an integral part of this film. The documentary
contains rare clips from some of Daviess earliest films, including
The Cardboard Lover (1928), The Patsy (1928), When Knighthood Was in Flower
(1922), and Quality Street (1927), as well as rare, never-before-seen
home movies of guests at Hearst Castle and from the couples European
travels.
Marion Davies was one of the first screwball comediennes, and her fine
comic timing shines throughout Captured on Film. Tennessee Williams once
said, "Marion Davies made up for the rest of Hollywood." Marion
Davies is one of the "Funny Ladies" who will be featured shortly
at the Giornate del Cinema Muto. LJ

trucchi - tecnicamente ancora attuali - e propone alcuni film inediti
