INTRODUZIONE
Mosca.
Scrive Paolo Cherchi Usai:
"Cara Madeleine,
soltanto pochi anni fa.

INTRODUCTION
This special programme is offered in tribute to a unique achievement
by a private archive dedicated to the resurrection of the work of one
of the greatest figures in film history. Georges Méliès
died in 1938 believing that barely a dozen fragments of film remained
from the miraculous creative years between 1896 and 1912, when he had
discovered, single-handed, the whole artistic and technical potential
of the new medium.
As she grew up, his granddaughter Madeleine,
who had been brought up by Méliès and his wife after the
death of her mother, determined to dedicate herself to seeking out everything
that might exist, anywhere in the world, of her grandfathers creation.
When she first began actively collecting, some forty years ago, the seemingly
impossible target she set herself was to find 60 titles. The efforts of
Madeleine Malthête-Méliès and her Association "Les
Amis de Georges Méliès" was soon to surpass this ambition.
In December 1999 the 200th Méliès rediscovery came to light,
found by Madeleines cousin Marie-Hélène, granddaughter
of Méliès son André, in Gosfilmofond of Moscow.
Paolo Cherchi Usai writes:
"Dear Madeleine,
Remember what film historians keep telling us? More than the 80%
of the films made during the silent era are considered lost. Miracles
can happen, though, and the saga of the quest for the lost films of Georges
Méliès has been (and still is) one of the most exciting
adventures in the rediscovery of the early film heritage. Longtime friends
of the Giornate are well aware that at least one "new" Méliès
has come to the surface every year, and the finds are always screened
during our event. If we thought we were getting spoiled, the golden harvest
of 1999 with its several titles located in France managed
to convince even the most sceptical researcher that there is still plenty
of room for pleasant surprises.
For several decades, Madeleine, you have been the driving force
(with Marie-Hélène Méliès, Jacques Malthête,
Françoise Carvillani, and other relatives and friends) of the Association
des Amis de Georges Méliès, a worldwide group of researchers
and archivists committed to the resurrection of the films made by the
magician of Montreuil. Not a long time ago you, Madeleine, began dreaming
of one day finding up to 60 titles and now Marie-Hélène
has uncovered in the deep midwinter of Moscows Gosfilmofond the
200th title, François Ier et Triboulet (1907-08)! This means
that about 40% of the 510 films made by Méliès between 1896
and 1913 are now available, something unimaginable only a few years ago.
While the search continues, we are proud to celebrate your passion and
enthusiasm in a special event dedicated to you and your cirque Méliès,
a small token of appreciation for a great friend of the Giornate and a
true lover of early cinema.
Sadly, Madeleine Malthête-Méliès health
will not permit her to travel to Sacile for the occasion, but the programme
will be presented by Marie-Hélène Lehérissey-Méliès,
with piano accompaniment by Laurence Lehérissey-Méliès,
great-great-grandson of the film-maker. The central section of the programme
is a recreation of a programme such as might have been presented by a
fairground showman of the period. For the final item in this programme,
Lehérissey-Méliès will perform the original "bonimenteur"
commentary, devised by Georges Méliès himself. She learnt
this text orally from her grandfather. Many years later, among Méliès'
papers, she discovered the original script, which proved to be word for
word as André Méliès had remembered it and taught
it to his granddaughter. David Robinson

Based
on a stage illusion of the growing playing cards, the film goes one better
when the characters on the royal cards come to life. The more modest stage
version of the trick had been performed at Méliès
Théàtre Robert-Houdin by Gaston Velle, who later became
a film-maker in his own right at the Pathé studios, specialising
in Méliès-style trick films.

One
of Méliès most inspired pieces of cinematic trickery
combines superimposition, double exposure, and the impression of a travelling
shot with the technique of Robertsons Phantasmagoria of 1800, in
which faces and figures were made to grow and shrink magically by moving
the projector away or towards the screen. Méliès, as scientist
magician, inflates his own protesting head with a pair of bellows. His
foolish assistant overdoes the inflation and the head bursts.
LES NOUVELLES LUTTES EXTRAVAGANTES (Star Film, F 1900)
Dir.: Georges Méliès; cast: Jehanne dAlcy;
35mm, 50m, 240" (16 fps), Association "Les Amis de Georges
Méliès". Senza didascalie / No intertitles.
Star Film Catalogue no. 309-310.
e smembramenti.
Very much an in-joke for fairground audiences, the film
has fun at the expense of fairground boxing booths. A pair of male pugilists
and a pair of female pugilists undergo various transformations and dismemberments.
LA FÉE CARABOSSE OU LE POIGNARD FATAL (Star Film,
F 1906)
Dir.: Georges Méliès; cast: Georges Méliès;
35mm, 236m, 12 (16 fps), Association "Les Amis de Georges Méliès".
Senza didascalie / No intertitles. Star Film Catalogue no. 877-887.
This seems to have
been one of a series of fairy-tale films which Méliès made
to the order of the furnishing store Dufayel, who used the films to entertain
children while their parents inspected the stock at leisure. The fact
that the film was deliberately designed for a juvenile audience may explain
why it is one of the few films for which a verbal commentary, apparently
devised by Méliès himself, exists. The story tells how a
penniless young troubador consults the Fairy Carabosse about his future,
but offends her by paying her with a bag of sand. He nevertheless evades
the Fairy's revenge, and wins the beautiful princess he saves from her
clutches.
New Discoveries

Senza didascalie / No intertitles. Star Film Catalogue no. 1.

FRANÇOIS PREMIER ET TRIBOULET (Star Film, F 1907)

One of the long-lost
Méliès titles was recently discovered in the collections
of the Russian State Film Archive, Gosfilmofond. The story tells how King
François I, suffering from indigestion, dismisses his jester Triboulet.
Triboulet wins back the Kings favours however by producing a Grecian
beauty, with whom he performs some tricks of elevation. The King, delighted
with the lady, attempts to kiss her, but finds himself embracing his jester
instead.
À LA CONQUÊTE DU PÔLE (Star Film, F 1912)
Dir.: Georges Méliès; cast: Georges Méliès;
35mm, 650m, 31 (16 fps), imbibizioni e viraggi / tinted and toned,
Filmarchiv Austria. Didascalie in tedesco / German titles. Star
Film Catalogue no. (senza numero / unnumbered).
Méliès last great exploration
fantasy is not in itself a new discovery, but this fine coloured print
of the period, discovered by Filmarchiv Austria, gives a glimpse of the
state in which the original audiences of 1912 saw the film.
