I film Lumière fuori catalogo | ||
INTRODUCTION "The project of collaboration between the Cineteca Italiana of Milan and les Archives du film et du dépôt légal du CNC (Bois dArcy) to restore the collection of Lumière films shot in Italy was definitively agreed in 1999. It was a great moment... In fact, the nitrate originals were already in an advanced state of decomposition. Many were sticky and almost at the stage of decomposition known as "State 3", when the support becomes gummy and soft and the photographic image disappears, eaten away by the nitrous vapours released from the support. It is thanks to frame-by-frame copying on a titling bench that it has been possible to transfer the films onto polyester negative film. This work took several weeks; the costs of restoration were considerable, and the co-operation in the project of the Association Frères Lumière was also decisive. These views filmed at the end of the 19th century are particularly beautiful, and we are happy to have been able to save them from destruction so that we may now present them at Sacile." Aldo Bernardini writes of the importance of this discovery: "Thanks to the reorganisation of the Lumière Archive, with the partial re-publication of the Catalogue compiled by Michelle Aubert and Jean-Claude Seguin and published in 1996 (in book form and as a CD-ROM), it is now possible to establish for the 1428 films recorded (out of a total of 2023 titles in the original Catalogue) the place and the country in which they were made, as well as discovering a quantity of new elements to aid identification of the cameramen, of the persons and events represented, dating, identification of the first known projection, and so on. "These identifying elements are also supplied in those few cases in which films catalogued in the Lumière archives have not been rediscovered either in negative or positive format. This new catalogue the fruit of a long, laborious but exemplary work of research has also permitted the identification of many films shot by Lumière operators between 1896 and 1905 and not included in the official catalogue. In respect to Italy whch constitutes one of the richest and most important sections of the catalogue a further group os 24 films has been added to the 107 films officially recorded, including either variant versions of films already in the catalogue (like that of the Diana Baths in Milan), or additional records taken on the occasion of events shown in films in the catalogue (like the marriage of Victor Emmanuele and Elena of Montenegro in October 1896), or groups of shots devoted to entirely new subjects (like the various films taken in the Vatican, with images of Pope Leo XIII). From examination of the copies, in the largest number of cases the reason for exclusion from the Catalogue often seems to be that there were better alternatives which in effect became official. "The work of dating and cataloguing the contents of these films part of them found by the Cineteca Nazionale of Rome is in large part still to be done, even though the team which worked on the Catalogue has already supplied a series of useful indications for the chronological and contextual placing of many takes. And it is above all from the comparison of these films and those of the Catalogue from the analytical examination of the places, of the landscapes, and of the people present in the scene that it has been possible to extract from these films themselves new elements of identification. The research which has begun on these hors catalogue films is rendered more complicated by ignorance of the sources used by the French team for the titling and for the identification of the events recorded in them, and of the reasons for which to take just one example the shot of a street without any significant points of reference has been labelled Italy and Naples, or simply as Italy. Another problem hard to resolve relates to the provenance of these films: we know that after the Cinématographe became freely available for purchase (in 1897), the apparatus was used in various parts of Italy, whether by ex-Lumière cameramen (as for example Filippo), or by showmen and film-makers who had no connection with the Lyon organisation. Moreover it is likely that, just as the Lumières were active in printing copies of their own films in the Edison format, on stock with eight perforations to each frame, there must have been, vice versa, films shot with apparatus of other formats but subsequently printed on Lumière stock, so that they could circulate in places equipped with the Cinématographe, an apparatus which, as we know, remained in use among Italian travelling showmen for several years after the turn of the century and the arrival on the market of cameras and projectors of the new generation. "Now, from the Cineteca Italiana of Milan, arrives another, even larger group of copies of hors catalogue Lumière films, attributed to our own country. Forty-three titles further enrich the picture already drawn on the basis of the first part of the work, but again bring to the surface the same doubts and problems already raised by the first group. Again in this second anthology there are references to events perhaps already covered in films included in the Catalogue (the takes of the hunt, for example, might form part of the series shot in Rome in December 1897, or might even be new versions of the same subject). But more numerous are cities and events quite absent from the Catalogue; for example the Palio of Siena [a horse-race in which different districts of the city compete], or the new scenes shot in Florence, or the incredible series in eight episodes (a record figure for Lumière) devoted to the horse-races, in the presence of the King. The confrontation of these titles and these scenes shot in Italy in the years before the turn of the century are likely to produce some useful indications and some surprises: but in any case it will involve lengthy and complex work, demanding the participation of people who know well not only the places and the views of the cities concerned (when they are identified), but who are also equipped to imagine how they might have appeared in the last years of the 19th century. In short, from this presentation at the Giornate del Cinema Muto there may begin a new phase of research on the Italian experience of the Lumières which, wrongly, until yesterday we believed close to a definitive and sufficient historiographic systematisation."
