Egli
viene invitato a caccia dai von Tell.
a scoprire informazioni preziose.
in quellimpresa.
Egli interpreta
JF
Count Ivan von Kaunowitz is a foreign officer who is spying for his
government. At a ball he meets the charming Ebba von Tell, whose father
is a government minister and whose family residence is, coincidentally,
situated near the fortifications which the Count has been sent to reconnoitre.
The Count is invited to join a hunt with the von Tells. Feigning an emotional
interest in Ebba, the Count escorts Ebba away from the hunt. As they ride
off, one of Ebbas friends, a Lapp, accidentally startles Ebbas
horse, whereupon the Count beats the man with his riding-crop. Intent
on revenge, the Lapp tails the couple to the vicinity of the fortifications,
where Ebba unwittingly helps the Count gain information about the defences.
The Count takes out his wallet to give Ebba a ring, but forgets to pick
the wallet up when they leave. The Lapp finds the wallet and, growing
suspicious of the Count, Ebba reluctantly distances herself from him.
The Count disguises himself as a knife-grinder, and befriends one
of Ebbas friends, Gunhild, a fishermans daughter. Attracted
to Ivan, Gunhild guides the Count around the terrain close to the fortification.
He receives a coded message that the time is right for him to blow up
the railway bridge near the fort, and leaves a letter for Gunhild before
setting off to blow up the bridge. Before the device can be detonated,
he is discovered by the Lapp. They fight, and the Count falls from the
bridge. Gunhild finds the Counts letter, which she shows to Ebba
and her family. As they read the letter, the Lapp brings news of the Counts
fall. Ebba and her family rush to the scene and find his body at the rivers
edge. As they try to console Ebba, news of the Counts death reaches
his regiment.
With location footage shot in the vicinity of Sollefteå in
central Sweden, and interiors shot in Copenhagen, LEspion dsterland
(released as För fäderneslandet in Sweden) is a rare
example of Klerckers work as an actor. Playing the part of Count
Ivan von Kaunowitz, Klercker gives a well- modulated performance, which
was praised by contemporary reviewers. Except for two later extant Hasselbladfilm
productions in which Klercker acted, and the incomplete Dödsritten
under cirkuskupolen (produced by Svenska Biografteatern in 1912), LEspion
dsterland is the only sustained example we have of Klercker
as actor. The film is also notable for the occasional use of reverse-field
cutting (in the scene where Ivan gives Ebba a ring), the elegant design
of some of its interior scenes (particularly those involving Ebba), and
stunning nocturnal scenes shot in the fishermans cottage. The variety
of camera set-ups and shot scales employed for the narrative climax of
the film are also unusual in a Swedish-directed production of the mid-1910s.

A peggiorare ulteriormente
Nattens barn costituisce unacquisizione veramente
gradita nel corpus di Klercker. JF
The young Violet Holmes is engaged as a maid in the household of Count
Berkow and his ageing mother. Chancing upon Violet admiring the Countesss
necklace, the Count becomes suspicious. One night when the Count is at
his club and the Countess is asleep, the international criminal Harry
Bresky breaks into their mansion. Violet discovers Bresky and gives chase,
but he escapes, and Violet, suspected of the theft, is convicted. Bresky
travels to America. Some years later, having served her sentence, Violet
has also travelled to America, where she has become a variety performer.
On a visit to America, the Count becomes enchanted with Violet, not recognising
her true identity. To make matters worse, Violet finds out that her best
friend, Lucile dOdette, is living with Bresky. Violet, with the
help of her brother, Dick, who is in Breskys service, keeps track
of the Counts movements. When the Count learns of Violets
true identity, he engages a detective to trap Bresky. The cunning Bresky,
however, foils an attempt to trap him by means of Violets necklace.
He makes the police believe that Violet once again is guilty of theft,
and she is taken into police custody. Securing her release, the Count
resumes his cross-town pursuit of Bresky, who is found in a seedy bar.
Following a desperate rooftop chase, Bresky throws himself into the sea,
where he dies in the waves. The Count and Violet are reunited, and with
the consent of the Counts mother and Violets brother, they
return happily to their homeland.
With stunning performances by Carl Barcklind and Ivar Kalling as
Bresky and the Count, Nattens barn is one of the great master criminal
films of Klerckers career, rivalled only by Barcklinds and
Olof Sandborgs performances as, respectively, Hoops and Craig in
Mysteriet natten till den 25:e (1917). The nocturnal scenes of
the theft in the Counts mansion, an elegant lakeside scene, and
striking shots from the streets and rooftops of Gothenburg, make for a
film with considerable compositional interest. Perhaps best remembered
for the energy with which Bresky is pursued across Gothenburg, the films
finest set-piece must be the extended series of shots which, cutting between
parallel action in Breskys house, disperses the action of trying
to outwit Bresky across five contiguous or near-contiguous spaces: dining-room,
reception room, hallway, cloakroom, and the house exterior. A most welcome
addition to the Klercker canon. JF

banda.
JF
Ellinor Petipon has been arrested for the murder of her husband. However,
she has lost her memory, and when confronted with the body of her husband,
does not recognise him. The judge decides that she should be remanded
in custody for observation. Several years later, Ellinor takes the prison
chaplain into her confidence, and tells of a house party where a childhood
admirer, Count Xavier, tries to press himself upon her. After the guests
leave, she faints, and is carried into a bedroom. Ellinor recounts that
she could remember nothing more of the event, but then dimly recalls seeing
Petipon dead on the chaise-longue, with policemen in the room. Believing
that it might help Ellinor recall the past, the next time the chaplain
visits, he brings his son. The sight of the priests son brings back
the memory that she too once had a son.
At home, Ellinors son reads of her release from prison in
the newspaper. Ellinor visits a low-life café where she overhears
a gang planning to break into her sons house. She sends him an anonymous
message to warn him of the planned break-in. Returning to the café,
Ellinor falls into conversation with a member of the gang. She gains his
confidence by showing him her prison release papers, and tells him that
she is familiar with the lay-out of the mansion which they intend to burgle.
Ellinor is invited to join the gang. When the son receives Ellinors
message, he initially dismisses the warning, but when the maid sees a
member of the gang snooping around the property, the son contacts the
police. Three plainclothes policemen arrive at the mansion.
That night Ellinor and the gang break into her former home. As
she climbs through the window into the bedroom, she recalls seeing Count
Xavier at the bedroom window. As the thieves set to work, Ellinor has
another vision, of the Count carrying her to the chaise-longue. She then
has a further vision in which, with arms outstretched, she stands by the
chaise-longue on which her husband lies dead. The domestic staff enter
the bedroom, and the maid phones the police. Roused from her trance-like
state, Ellinor escorts the gang to the living-room, where her son and
the police catch the gang and arrest Ellinor. On his deathbed, the Count
signs a confession admitting that he killed Ellinors husband. When
Ellinor appears before the court, the judge recognises Ellinors
name and, having the Counts confession close to hand, reads the
confession to the court. As Ellinor listens, her vision of the past becomes
clearer, and Ellinor recalls the moment when her husband was shot by the
Count in a fight in the bedroom. As she recounts this traumatic moment,
her son, recognising his mother, approaches Ellinor and, reunited, they
return to the family home.
I mörkrets bojor, a star vehicle for Sybil Smolova, who also
starred in Vägen utför, one of the lost Klercker films
of 1916, presents a convoluted narrative which unfolds through a series
of partial flashbacks. Also featuring the suave Ivar Kalling (who played
leading roles for Klercker in the same year in Mellan liv och död,
Kärleken segrar, and Nattens barn), and the ever-resourceful
Carl Barcklind (a highly successful actor on the Swedish stage and in
operetta), the film is particularly memorable for its low-level lighting
during the break-in in the living-room. The scenes involving Petipons
corpse in the first and last reels of the film, and the scene in reel
3 where Ellinor is hypnotised, were shortened by the Swedish Board of
Review. JF

a prevedere fin dallinizio dellinquadratura), o quella in
In questultimo
JF
Lieutenant Junker ("Galenpanna),* on the town with two
comrades, mistakenly takes Professor Loris coat when leaving the
Golden Crown restaurant. While having a nightcap with his friends, Junker
discovers his mistake, and finds a notebook in the Professors coat
pocket giving details of his appointments. Junker decides to disguise
himself as the absent-minded Professor. The following day Junker goes
on leave, and, following the Professors schedule, gets into a number
of scrapes which culminate in his being pursued by students from the university.
Taking refuge in a florists, Junker chances on the Professors
niece, Ina Floor. Ina tells her mother about the encounter, and she and
her mother go to the Golden Crown restaurant, where Ina mistakes the disguised
Junker for her uncle. After Junker and the Professor quite literally bump
into each other at the restaurant, Junker removes his disguise and, seeing
Ina in the restaurant, is smitten by the sight of her, just as she is
smitten by the sight of him. After a further series of escapades, the
coat is returned to the Professor, and Junker is rewarded with Ina.
For those who believe that Klercker knew no method other than staging
in depth, this is the film they should view: many scenes are, of
course, staged in depth, and with that decorative privileging of foreground
space we expect of Klercker. But, with the restaurant scene at the close
of reel 2 and opening of reel 3 in which Junker first notices Inas
interest in him (as, now out of disguise, he enters the restaurant and,
watched by Ina and her mother, crosses the room to join his friends),
not only does Klercker demonstrate a well-crafted familiarity with the
principles of classical space (although the reverse-angle shots between
Junker and Ina privilege other conventions), but the interweaving of action
between no fewer than four centres of interest (the restaurant doorway,
the table at which Ina and her mother sit, the table where Professor Clasik
and, variously, the disguised or the real Professor Loris sit, and the
table around which Junker and his companions sit) provides occasion for
an elaborate play upon who is looking at whom, and a complex and unequal
distribution of knowledge between the principal protagonists. Although
Revelj and Nobelpristagaren, both produced in 1917, demonstrate
a concern for shot/reverse-shot constructions, nowhere is character subjectivity
better rendered in Klercker than in the absorbed or shy and coquettish
gazes of this scene.
The stylistic assurance noted in the restaurant scene may also
be observed in scenes where Klercker, developing generic conventions,
humorously exploits the compositional conventions of staging in depth.
Examples include the scene where Junker throws a pail of water over an
unsuspecting woman, an event which the viewer anticipates from the moment
the shot opens, or the scene where Junker dons the disguise of Professor
Loris. In the latter case, the momentary hesitation in interpreting depth
cues where an area of reflected space framed in a mirror at the right
of the shot is contrasted with an area of deep space to the left of the
shot, stylishly exploits a compositional ambiguity evident in many films
of the 1910s.
Elis Ellis, the actor who plays "Galenpanna", directed
and appeared in two further "Galenpanna" films for Filmindustri
Skandia, produced in the Otterhällan studio: Spöket på
Junkershus (aka Löjtnant Galenpanna på semester,
1918) and Löjtnant Galenpannas sista växel
(released 1919). Sadly, both films are lost. Of the camera operators represented
in this tribute, Sven Pettersson had worked previously with Klercker on
Ringvall på äventyr (1913) at Svenska Biografteatern,
where Carl-Gustaf Florin also briefly worked before joining Hasselbladfilm.

Poi fa in
passa a trovare Rosa in teatro.
su inquadrature lunghe e pochissimi inserti, Nattliga toner rappresenta
JF
The wealthy Baron Robert von Meislingen has literary ambitions that
far exceed his talent. In love with the stage, and with an eye for a young
actress, Rosa Lund, the Baron tries to attract her attention, but she
is betrothed to Emil Ström, and refuses the Barons advances.
Visiting the impoverished poet Peter Långhår (Peter Long Hair),
who rents an attic room in one of the Barons many run-down buildings,
the Baron tries to persuade Långhår to sell one of his poems.
When, a few days later, Meislingen reads the work to friends at the literary
association, he is congratulated as the "author" of the work.
Some time later, Peter Långhår reads the Baron an extract
from his new play, Nattliga toner, and the Baron again offers to
buy this new work. The Baron arranges for Peter Långhår to
receive 100 silver crowns. This action and the poets death by an
unknown hand are discovered by the poets former neighbour Gamle
Jens (Old Jens) when he goes to see him. Six months later, the play receives
its premiere, and the Baron becomes famous overnight. He arranges for
a charity performance of the play to be given to elderly people living
in the almshouse, one of whom is Old Jens. Having heard Långhår
read an extract from the play before his death, Old Jens suspects that
the Baron is not the real author, and plans with Rosa and her fiancé
how best to take revenge. The Baron calls on Rosa at the theatre. During
an intermission, Emil, disguised to look like the poet, appears before
the Baron, who mistakes him for Långhår, and falls through
the stage trapdoor into the pit below. Old Jens, sitting in the almshouse
garden, reads in the newspaper that before dying the Baron had admitted
to stealing the manuscript, and that his large fortune had been bequeathed
to charity.
From the prologue introducing the three principal characters to
the closing scene where the elderly Justus Hagman (Old Jens) is seated
by a pond in warm sunshine, a tone of measured control characterises the
acting in this slow-paced drama. With a highly pared-down visual style
relying almost exclusively on long takes and the minimum of cut-ins, Nattliga
toner represents quintessential Klercker, working in a style that brings
to mind some of the Russian filmmakers of the early- and mid-1910s. Nowhere
is this better displayed than in the final scene of reel 3, where the
Baron (played by the assistant director, Manne Göthson), driven by
pangs of remorse, wakes at night and goes into the dining-room to pour
himself a drink. The delineation of foreground space with table and chairs
and a light above, of mid-field space into which the Baron slowly drifts,
and of rear-field space, is striking. Not only is there considerable depth
of field, but the slow progress of the Baron as he gradually switches
off the lights and returns to the bedroom, where he sits on the edge of
the bed to remove his slippers before sinking back into bed and finally
switching off the bedroom light, is arguably one of the most poignant
and delicately staged moments in a Hasselblad film. Harking back to the
measured acting of a film such as I minnenas band (Klercker, 1916),
Nattliga toner represents a high point in the studios output.
