FILM / FILM NOTES Il debutto cinematografico / Debuts
In seguito, pur continuando
In late 1905,
Feuillade was persuaded by his friend André Heuzé to seek work as
a scenarist at the Pathé Studios. When that fell through, because of a
change in the studio direction, Feuillade applied instead to Gaumont, where Alice
Guy (1873-1968), the worlds first woman director, was artistic director.
He joined the studio late in 1905, and set about turning out scores of scenarios
for "scènes comiques" which were directed by Alice Guy and Etienne
Arnaud. From the start, his little anecdotes typical early titles are Le
Pantalon, about a man whose family too enthusiastically shorten his overlong
trousers, and Arrêtez mon chapeau!, involving a silk hat and a high
wind revealed a distinctive verve and wit. While continuing to supply scenarios
for his colleagues, Feuillade became a director in his own right. In January
1907 he succeeded Alice Guy as artistic director at the Gaumont Studios. He was
to occupy this post to the end of his life, despite seeing a succession of brilliant
collaborators among them the directors Bosetti, Cohl, Perret, and Fescourt,
and the players Musidora and Marcel Levesque leave the studio, less patient
that Feuillade with their bosss parsimony, ingratitude, and insensitivity
to the contribution their talents brought to his production. Gaumont ruled his
"Factory" with an iron hand. He was indeed the prototype of the ruthless
commercial producer: the weekly Tuesday sessions at which new films were screened
and criticised were often occasions to abuse and humiliate his employees: Gaumont
himself called the occasion "censure de Mardi", and Feuillade once warned
Alice Guy that she should worry if ever Gaumont praised a film, because that would
be the sure mark of a flop.

Disgraziatamente, nessuno
di questi film è sopravvissuto per intero. JC Having

(a landowner of the Camargue), whom she seduces. Her intention is to steal, with
the aid of an accomplice, a cheque which represents the proceeds of a sale of
cattle. Her plan is foiled however, thanks to the dedication of the ganaderos
young secretary. Entirely shot on location in the Camargue, this is one of the
earliest of Feuillades surviving films clearly to demonstrate his predilection
for systematically mixing documentary and fiction though the idea seems
already to have been evident in the films he shot in Britanny during the summer
of 1909, for example La Légende des phares. Unfortunately none of
these films has survived complete.
In tale
In 1909 Feuillade and his employer Léon Gaumont were concerned
with devising strategies to combat the inroads that the Pathé company were
making into the international market. Feuillades solution one which
would subsequently be a favourite policy for Hollywood was to avoid local
and specifically French subjects and to seek universal stories and spectacular
costumes and decors, generally historical. In part inspired by the prestige success
of Pathés "Film dArt", the outcome was Gaumonts
series styled "Le Film Esthétique". Feuillades manifesto
for the series, published in the trade press in the Spring of 1910, expresses
a notably progressive conception of cinema. He asserts that "Cinematography
proceeds equally, if not more, from the art of the painter than from that of the
dramatist, since it is to our eyes that it is addressed". Also, in contrast
to the Film dArt, which favoured adaptation from famous authors, Feuillade
asserted that "Whether it is a matter of historical reconstruction, mythological
fantasies, gay or sad stories" the subjects should be specially written for
the screen, and not taken from theatrical works already inspired by the particular
genre in question. (This policy had the additional advantage of saving Gaumont
from paying royalties or adaptation fees to expensive writers). The manifestations
of the Film Esthétique are inclined, like those of the Films dArt,
to be turgid in terms of dramatic development, but equally they are often astonishing
demonstrations of Feuillades precocious visual sense and originality of
composition.

queste riescono a interessarci, a commuoverci, è solo perché in
Dogma 95!) Feuillade was always ready to make a virtue of necessity.
No doubt uneasy at the cost of the Films Esthétique, Gaumont seems to have
pressed his artistic director to economise. The result was Feuillades series
"La Vie telle quelle est". The use of contemporary stories, real
locations, and everyday costumes not only effected substantial economic savings,
but pointed Feuillade in the direction which was to produce his most inspired
work. Announcing the new series in March 1911, Feuillade hailed the first of a
series of "scenes which are and want to be slices of life. If they interest
us, if they move us, it is because of the quality which emerges after having inspired
them. They prohibit all fantasy and represent men and things just as they are
and not as they ought to be." (The decisiveness of his manifestos anticipates
Dogme 95!)

the innocent woman; she commits suicide. Arguably the most memorable episode in
the "La Vie telle quelle est" series, this sombre drama has the
powerful simplicity of a Greek tragedy taking place with the scenario of a quiet,
indifferent Nature. Nature is definitely the "chorus" in this film,
culminating with the astonishing shot of the dead woman floating in the pond,
surrounded by water lilies, very much in the style of Pre-Raphaelite painting

primi bambini prodigio Bébé e Bout-de-Zan / The First
Child Stars Bébé and Bout-de-Zan Feuillade, che
a volte pericolosamente precoce.
impegnativi, dopo aver interpretato Eustache Mazamette in Les Vampires,
meccanica. JC Feuillade was evidently very fond of children,
and extraordinarily patient and skilful in winning performances from them. Moreover,
he was the first film-maker systematically to exploit the special attraction of
funny children for a universal audience. He advised his collaborators, "If
you want a film to sell well, include a child among the actors." Few of his
own films are childless, and in the years before the First World War audiences
in many countries delighted in the antics and mischief of Bébé and
Bout-de-Zan. The series of "Bébé" comedies, made
between the end of 1910 and the beginning of 1913, comprises some 70 very short
films. The son of a minor music hall artist who adopted the professional name
of Abélard the Comic Idiot, little Clément Mary (1905-1974) soon
became, under the tutelage of Feuillade, a star to rival the popularity of Max
Linder. His sister Alphonsine (Fonfon) frequently appeared with him. Like many
child stars after him, however, Bébé had a tiresome and demanding
parent, and was himself perilously precocious. In the summer of 1912, Feuillade,
with seeming innocence, directed the little star in a film called Bébé
adopte un petit frère. The little brother was played by René
Poyen (1908-1968), who under the name of "Bout-de-Zan" was very soon
to usurp Bébé at the Gaumont studios and in the hearts of the public.
Bébés father took him to Pathé, but without the inspired
guidance of Feuillade he was quickly forgotten. He returned to films, however,
in 1935 under the name of René Dary, to enjoy a new and fruitful career.
His most notable role out of a score of films in this later career was the unforgettable
Among other television appearances, Les Compagnons de Baal (1968), a serial
by Pierre Prévert, was a link with the splendours of the great series films
of the Feuillade years. The "Bout-de-Zan" series followed
the "Bébé" films and enjoyed equal, if not greater glory,
comprising a total of some forty titles. An instinctive, spontaneous and extraordinarily
charming actor, Bout-de-Zan unlike Bébé, who is usually presented
as a petit-bourgeois characteristically appears as a street kid,
a child of the people. Capable of sustaining dramatic roles, Bout-de-Zan, after
having played Eustache Mazamette in Les Vampires, was to create the character
of le Môme Réglisse, one of the most memorable figures in Judex.
He lost nothing of his talent in his adolescent years, and made several films
(see below) with Feuillade under the name of René Poyen, ex-Bout-de-Zan.

else sought to employ him. Tired of waiting, he took up the study of mechanical

e in La nouvelle mission de Judex.
1995) racconta che lesoso Gaumont insistette affinché Levesque, dopo
Lattore, analogamente a quanto
breve durata. In November 1913, Feuillade embarked on the first of a long
run of "cinévaudevilles", which were to form two series of "La
Vie drôle", which continued, with an interruption at the start of the
war, until April 1918, and consisted of a total of 30 titles. The star of most
of these was Feuillades best-loved comedian, the inspired Marcel Levesque
(1877-1962), friend of Blaise Cendrars, disciple of Henri Bergson, and with long
theatrical experience preceding his career at Gaumont. Levesque was to provide
comic relief in Les Vampires, Judex, and La Nouvelle Mission
de Judex. Like many of those who worked for Léon Gaumont over the years,
Levesque finally left the studio out of exasperation at his employers refusal
to reward him adequately.
Vampires Louis Feuillade, 1995) says that the demanding Gaumont insisted
that Levesque was fully employed on the day that elapsed between the end of work
on La Nouvelle Mission de Judex and the official termination of his engagement,
which enabled Feuillade to film Levesques final cinévaudeville, Aide-toi.
In common with many of Feuillades collaborators, Levesques film career
did not prosper without his first mentor. A series of films in the character of
"Serpentin" made for Louis Nalpas soon came to an end. LES

Victorin Jasset
aveva portato sugli schermi Nick Carter e Zigomar; Pierre Bressol aveva creato
a ottenere.
Fantômas (1913-1914), in the opinion of Francis Lacassin, is "not
only all the mythology of the world. Fantômas is also the memory
of an epoch." Feuillade set the fantastic, fairy-tale myths of Allain and
Souvestre, with their super-criminals, intricate plots, the paraphernalia of villainy,
and the eternal battle of good and evil, in the everyday world of Paris and its
environs in the last flickering of the Belle Epoque, so creating his own unique
genre of fantastic realism. Detective stories were in vogue. Victorin Jasset had
brought to the screen Nick Carter and Zigomar; Pierre Bressol had created Nat
Pinkerton for Eclair, and Pathé had countered with the comic adventures
of Nick Winter. Feuillade himself had featured René Navarre in the character
of the detective Dervieux in several films in 1912-13 (Le Proscrit, LOubliette,
La Course aux millions, Le Guet-apens, LEcrin du Radjah).
New inspiration came with the arch-criminal Fantômas, whose adventures had
been chronicled in 32 pulp-thrillers which had emanated in the course of 32 months
(1911-1913) from the prolific pens of Pierre Souvestre (1874-1914) and Marcel
Allain (1885-1969). Pathé had originally offered the writers 2000 francs
for the film rights. Daringly, Souvestre and Allain went to Gaumont and demanded
and got 6000 francs. Much of the secret of the films success
was Feuillades inspired casting. The former detective Dervieux, René
Navarre, became the unforgettable Fantômas; glowering Renée Carl
the wicked Lady Beltham; Edmond Bréon the dogged commissioner Juve; and
boyish Georges Melchior the journalist Fandor. The public of 1914 were thrilled,
and intellectuals like Cendrars, Cocteau, and Apollinaire recognised a new visual
poetry. The censors, on the contrary, were gravely alarmed.

poco dotato Gaston Ravel. In sole dieci settimane Feuillade riuscì a girare
On the outbreak of the First World
War, Feuillade and his company were in Spain, filming material on location (especially
at bullfights) which was completed much later with studio shooting in Paris. The
outbreak of war closed cinemas and studios and saw all young and able-bodied men
recruited to war service. The Gaumont Studios remained inactive for several weeks.
Feuillade resumed production in Marseilles in November 1914, with the not very
talented Gaston Ravel sharing responsibility for direction, and a small company
including Bout-de-Zan, Musidora, and Marcel Levesque. In a mere ten weeks he directed
an astonishing eighteen films, including six Levesque cinévaudevilles in
the "La Vie drôle" series, five Bout-de-Zan comedies, in which
the infant star demonstrated his patriotism by dedicating himself to various forms
of service, and a quantity of patriotic subjects, which even at the time were
admired for their humane and sentimental qualities, in contrast to the bombastic
and belligerent nature of most propagandist films of the early war period. Feuillades
most impressive statement on the war, however, was to come in 1919, with Vendémiaire.
In March 1915, with the titles of the last Bout-de-Zan film still unwritten, Feuillade
was drafted into military service as an officer in a transport division. In July
1915 he was hospitalised following a heart attack and, invalided out of the service,
he resumed his functions at the Gaumont Studios on 9 August 1915.
Les
of Pauline e The Exploits of Elaine.
tempo dopo aver messo in circolazione lultimo episodio.
come "objets trouvés" alcune sequenze inutilizzate in altri progetti.
Immediately upon demobilisation, Feuillade embarked on his second great
mystery serial, Les Vampires. Pathé had profited from the war by
developing his American production, and embarking on the hugely successful Pearl
White serials, The Perils of Pauline and The Exploits of Elaine.
These were inspired exercises in marketing. Each weekly episode was serialised
in daily instalments in a popular newspaper, with the big suspense surprise reserved
for Saturday, the last issue of the week. Les Vampires did not yet emulate
this strategy: the instalments came out irregularly and the "book of the
film" was not published until some time after the release of all the episodes.
Its triumph, however, was immense: the public were fascinated by this fantastic
story of the super-criminals who masqueraded under the mysterious identity of
The Vampires, with their demonic leader. Above all was the haunting, erotic image
of "Irma Vep", queen of the Vampires, inimitably personified by Musidora.
There was no real script: incidents were invented and improvised from day to day,
often dictated by the availability of actors as they were called up or released
from military service. When Jean Ayme, playing the key role of the Grand Vampire,
committed the unforgivable offence of being absent from the set, Feuillade without
hesitation improvised a scene in which Irma Vep shoots the Grand Vampire dead.
Ayme found himself replaced first by Fernand Hermann, who played the Vampires
new leader Moreno until his leave expired, whereupon the character was sent to
the guillotine. In turn Hermann was replaced by another soldier on leave, Louis
Leubas, in the character of Satanas. No doubt this improvisation contributed much
to the uniquely surreal, "automatist" quality of the series, as much
as did Feuillades singular imaginative invention and his habit (another
surrealist trait) of "collage" working into the film, like "objets
trouvés", unused sequences from quite other projects.

LA FUGUE DE LILI
(Gaumont, F 1917) Dir.: Louis Feuillade; ph.: Léon Clausse;
cast: Marcel Levesque, Yvonne Dario, René Cresté, Gaston
Michel, Yvette Andreyor, Edouard Mathé, Louis Leubas, Armand Dutertre;
35mm, 810m, 40 (18 fps), Cinémathèque Française. Prima
proiezione / Released 21.12.1917.
Delmas. JC A sentimental dramatic comedy set among teachers
in a provincial lycée. Delmas, the young and timid teacher of philosophy,
is in love with Lili, the daughter of Chaumette, the teacher of rhetoric. The
young man makes his proposal of marriage. But Lili is in love with a young aristocrat,
Hubert de Fresnois. Huberts father forbids the marriage and the young people
elope. La Fugue de Lili might be considered as the culmination of the series
"La Vie telle quelle est". It is certainly an exceptional film
in Feuillades work, taking a hackneyed subject, but capturing the quiet
and killing tedium of provincial life in a manner that sometimes calls to mind
Chekhov. The final shots are presumably missing: the logic of the story demands
that Lili in the end marries Delmas. JC Il dopoguerra

and Mary, refugees from the occupied territories, together with Pierre Bertin,
a convalescing war casualty, come to work on the grape havest in the vineyards
of lHérault. Among the grape-pickers are two escaped German prisoners
posing as Belgians. Louise, Père Larchers third daughter, has remained
in the occupied zone. In the house which is occupied by the Germans, she secretly
receives her husband, who has escaped from a prison camp. For many critics, some
sequences of this story of peasant life during the First World War, filmed in
Feuillades native countryside, anticipate Italian neo-realism of the 1950s.
JC Francis Lacassin called the film "an inopportune masterpiece
of poetic realism": "Vendémiaire showed the tragic face
of war to the French who for five years had looked into it without weakening
too long not to want to forget it. The film came out in Paris in January 1919,
three months after it was shot in the Bas-Languedoc at the end of Summer 1918.
Released less than two months after the armistice, it represented an insupportable
delay in relation to resuming the course of life. In the absence of spectators,
who were taking leave from patriotism, no-one recognised the technical audacity
or the part of himself that Feuillade had put into this patriotic allegory curiously
situated in the scenes of his childhood. LENGRENAGE

Arthur Bernède, uscì in dodici episodi settimanali, in coincidenza
plastica ricercatezza, La nouvelle mission de Judex è generalmente
mission de Judex, Tih Minh e Barrabas) vennero realizzate
In Tih
segreta criminale. Both the American and the French serials of the First
World War era stirred the anxiety and the ire of moralists. At one point the showing
of Les Vampires was prohibited, and only the charms of Musidora, Irma Vep
herself, softened the heart and stern resolve of the Paris Chief of Police. In
response to these moralistic mumblings, the eponymous hero of Feuillades
next serial, Judex, played by René Cresté, was made a monument
of virtue, defender of the law, the avenger of wrongs. Judex was the heir of Dumas
heroes and the ancestor of Superman a handsome, upstanding man of mysterious
origins, bent on avenging the injustice done to his father by a wicked banker.
By this time the production and marketing was more systematic. Judex, co-written
by Feuillade and Arthur Bernède, came out in twelve weekly episodes, coinciding
with the serialisation of the story in Le Petit Parisien, and separate
publication in booklet form. The sequel, La Nouvelle Mission de Judex,
was undertaken at the instigation of the publishers of Le Petit Parisien,
who demanded it from Bernède even before Judex had reached its ninth
sensational episode. For all its plastic beauties, La Nouvelle Mission de
Judex is generally regarded as the weakest of the serials, execrated by Louis
Delluc (no admirer of Feuillade) as an "abomination feuilletonesque".
The two parts of Judex provided good comic roles for Marcel Levesque as
the detective Cocantin, and Bout-de-Zan as the enchanting urchin Réglisse;
and a suitably wicked manifestation for Musidora as Diana Monti. After this and
a few more quickly made vaudevilles Levesque and Feuillade reluctantly parted,
thanks to the refusal of Gaumont to reward the actor adequately. Most of
the four crime serials Judex, La Nouvelle Mission de Judex,
Tih Minh, and Barrabas were shot in Nice, where Feuillade
had taken his unit in 1916, when conditions in Paris made shooting next to impossible.
(On his arrival he found a dozen other film units in production in Nice). In Tih
Minh and Barrabas, Feuillade returned to the successful Vampires
formula of a dastardly secret society.

sarebbe stata fatale. JC Rudolph Strelitz, known in the underworld

of Claude Varèse and the fiancée of Raoul de Nérac, the intrepid
journalist and frend of her brother, escape from the clutches of the infamous
Dr. Lucius, Barrabass sadistic lieutenant? The last of Feuillades
great detective serials. A film systematically embedded in its period, using aeroplanes,
radio, and similar symbols of modernity. Startlingly modern too is the nightclub
where an obviously homosexual barman greets Dr. Lucius and Maupré, and
where two languid lesbians dance the tango, clinging together, while a maître
dhôtel offers the clients pinches of cocaine on a spatula. And this
was three years before La Garçonne. Barrabas was the first
film by Feuillade to win qualified favour in the eyes of Louis Delluc. The title
role brought Gaston Michel enormous fame, which was to prove fatal to him.

serial / Later Serials Dopo Barrabas, Feuillade realizzò
altri sette serial. I primi furono Les deux gamines (12 episodi, 1921)
A questi fece seguito Le fils du flibustier
of the Storm e il Jackie Coogan di Circus Days.
Io tengo sempre presente
Questi spettatori, i
After Barrabas, Feuillade was to make seven more serials. Les
Deux Gamines (12 episodes, 1921), LOrpheline (12 episodes, 1921),
and Parisette (12 episodes, 1922) all featured a new star, the White Russian
émigrée Sandra Milowanoff. These were followed by Le Fils de
Flibustier (12 episodes, 1922), originally planned as a swashbuckling nautical
drama about pirates. With characteristic adaptability, and perhaps for reasons
of economy, at the 4th episode Feuillade abruptly moved the action from the 17th
century to the 20th, shooting a new, modern prologue (set in a mental hospital
a nod to Caligari?) to indicate that the period section was a flashback.
Finally came Vindicta (5 "périodes", 1923), LOrpheline
de Paris (6 episodes, 1924), and Le Stigmate (6 "chapitres",
1925), which was completed by Maurice Champreux after the death of Feuillade on
26 February 1925. The style had changed radically; whether because crime
serials were out of date, or because Léon Gaumont demanded a more "respectable"
kind of fare above moral criticism, or because Feuillades own taste had
mellowed. For the most part the emphasis of the stories was sentimental and melodramatic.
Francis Lacassin sardonically characterises the new Feuillade style: "Les
Deux Gamines, the story of two orphans whom the intrigues of an old maid and
a rogue separate from their grandfather, marks the beginning of his decline. LOrpheline
(1921), Parisette (1922), Le Fils du Flibustier (1923), and Vindicta
(1924) are now no more than a collection of child-mothers, little dressmakers,
station-masters, tinsmiths, dairymaids, or nuns preyed upon by strange men and
pickpockets, shady journalists, lecherous bankers, unscrupulous cooks, sour old
maids, and artists of unrecognised genius. "Orphans cry from sorrow when
they are carried off, and they cry from joy when they are married. They share
the star role with the lords, officers, and dairymen who occasionally save them
and marry them. Now the bandit in black silk hood, the intrepid journalist, the
criminal beauty, the champion of justice in broad-brimmed hat and cape with silver
buckles, the Grand Vampire of many faces, all sleep, embalmed, in the memory of
the lovers of the serial." The new style found its audience, just the
same. "As usual, he was imitated: his successes had still the value of example.
And the year 1924 saw Paris overwhelmed by afflicted victims. Thus there suffered
on the screen LEnfant des Halles, Les Deux Gosses, Enfants
de Paris, Griffiths Orphans of the Storm, and Jackie Coogan in
Circus Days. No doubt if we could compare these other films with those
of Feuillade, we would be amazed, in every one of his, by the virtuosity of the
mise-en-scène, the sincerity of the acting, the unchanged poetry of the
landscapes, and the realism of situations which, treated by anyone else, could
be insupportable." Feuillade convincingly defended his position in an
interview in 1923, after he had suffered insults for his populism from "highbrows"
of the order of Louis Delluc and André Antoine: "I have not the slightest
intention of excusing myself for making Le Fils du Flibustier or Vindicta.
I even believe that I am nearer to the truth. You jeer at metro employees who
devour their pulp novels while punching tickets. I remember that these same employees
were our first public, in fairground booths where, between the wrestlers and the
animal trainer, a bad, 5-minute comic film would be presented on an improvised
screen. These spectators, the first believers, witnessed the birth of the cinema
... their demands are simple but imperious. They want to laugh and cry. They want
stories more than anything else in the world. We have to satisfy this public.
We have to respect its sentimentality and know how to find the way to it. That
is why we make melodrama and cinema novelette.

A Parigi
In Portugal,
Manöela, the granddaughter of the Marquis de Costabella, a ruined nobleman,
becomes a Carmelite in order to expiate the crimes of which she believes her grandfather
to be guilty. She dies during the ceremony of taking the veil. In Paris, the banker
Stéfan falls in love with Parisette, who works in the opera. In the course
of an evening at the bankers house, the Marquis de Costabella, now rich
and travelling to forget his grief, is astonished to find that Parisette is the
exact double of Manöela. Parisette is the niece of Cogolin, a cashier in
Stéfans bank. Cogolin is the friend of Madame Stéfan, a former
secretary who married her boss out of love. Madame Stéfan has a secret
child.... When Gaston Michel arrived in Lisbon for the shooting of Parisette,
he was carried in triumph by crowds shouting "Barrabas! Barrabas!",
despite the heavy rain. A few days later he died from pneumonia. He was replaced
in the role of the Marquis de Costabella by Bernard Derigal. The sequence of taking
the veil, which made a great impression at the time, is unfortunately partly missing.
This was René Clairs second and last appearance as a screen actor.
Lultima scoperta Bouboule / The Last Discovery
e lanciò unaltra piccola stella lincantevole, vivace
e spontanea Bouboule.
suoi film (quattro lungometraggi e i serial Lorpheline de Paris e
In the last year of his activity, Feuillade discovered one
more child star the charming, vivacious, unaffected Bouboule. She was an
instant hit with audiences, and from Le Gamin de Paris (December 1923)
until his death just over a year later, on 26 February 1925, Feuillade used her
in every film he made four features and the serials LOrpheline
de Paris and Le Stigmate. In almost all she was partnered with wonderful
tact and sympathy by the 16-year-old actor René Poyen the former
baby star Bout-de-Zan, now grown to a charming and characterful teenager, and
the ideal big brother for Bouboule. LE GAMIN DE PARIS (Gaumont,

Sandra Milowanoff, Bouboule, René Van Delly, Berthe Jalabert, Adolphe Candé;
35mm, 1658m, 80 (18 fps), Cinématheque Française. Prima proiezione
/ Released 7.12.1923.
e preferì andare a scuola. JC Lisette, a typist working
at home, lives with her grandmother and her brother Joseph, a printers apprentice,
in an apartment in a working-class district of Paris. She is in love with Amédée,
who lives in the same building and has promised to marry her. The young man claims
to be a simple painter and decorator, but he is in reality the son of General
Morin, who is regarded as a stuffy old person. Amédée is afraid
to tell his father of his desire to marry a poor young girl. It is Joseph who
sorts things out, after rescuing the generals little granddaughter from
drowning. One of Feuillades very rare adaptations, which transposes
the action to the Paris of his own time. The film marked the return of Bout-de-Zan
to the screen and the first film appearance of Bouboule. Mistinguett had noticed
this amusing little girl, then aged six, in her parents hairdressing salon,
and had presented her on the stage of the Casino de Paris. Feuillade in turn noticed
her, and gave her the role of Gaby in Le Gamin de Paris. Bouboule showed
herself a true actress, with a remarkable instinct and spontaneity, and proved
a perfect partner for Bout-de-Zan, by this time arrived at the ripe old age of
fifteen. She was to become a child star, but after half a dozen films she ceased
to be amused by movies, and chose school instead. JC PIERROT

maldestra sorellina. Il montaggio è di una modernità sorprendente,
in particolare nelle sequenze iniziali, girate a Nizza durante il carnevale.
JC Pierrot et Pierrette, brother and sister, live in a caravan with
their grandfather, the former ringmaster of a circus. To earn a living, they sing
in the streets, and their lives are happy. But a charitable lady interferes, determined
to put grandfather in an old folks home and the children in an orphanage.
Pierrot and Pierrette run away, and fall into the hands of a travelling vendor
who wants to use them for burglaries. This is the best film with the enchanting
team of Bout-de-Zan and Bouboule as protective big brother and resourceful, if
sometimes mistaken, little sister. The editing has a startling modernity, particularly
in the opening sequences staged in Nice at Carnival time. JC LUCETTE

Lucette in America.
The violinist Pascalon, too old to find work, takes care of his 6-year-old
orphan granddaughter. Despite her extreme youth, Lucette has an instinctive talent
as a dancer. A rich American couple who have admired her skill wish to adopt her,
since she reminds them of the child they lost in infancy. The tearful Pascalon
refuses, and the embarrassed Americans give him a $1000-dollar bill. Later, when
the police suspect him of having stolen the money, he dies of grief. Lucette is
taken in by her cousin Albine, whose husband soon after runs off with a bohemian
lady and the housekeeping money. Happily the Americans return on a trip and take
Lucette back to America with them. Very close to the story of Mater Dolorosa,
this was the last melodrama directed by Feuillade, two months before his death.
