INTRODUZIONE
come J. Stuart Blackton e Winsor McCay, i giovani disegnatori scandinavi
fatte in casa.
"Storm
Latina. Scandinavia e Russia a parte, in Europa sembra siano stati i paesi
In Svezia i primi messaggi pubblicitari
animati furono firmati da Arvid Olson. Ne fecero parecchi anche Victor
Bergdahl e Storm P. Questultimo lavorò a stretto contatto
con De Danske Spritfabrikker (Le Industrie Danesi di Liquori), mentre
in Norvegia la pubblicità cinematografica era commissionata principalmente
dalla ditta di tabacchi J.L. Tiedemann Tobaksfabrik.
Explorations: Film before 1930, curato da John Fullerton e Jan Olsson

INTRODUCTION
The first attempts to produce animated films in the Nordic countries
go back to the mid-1910s. Inspired by pioneers like J. Stuart Blackton
and Winsor McCay, young Scandinavian cartoonists undertook their first
animated experiments with a great deal of enthusiasm and simple home-made
equipment. The earliest Nordic animated films involved time-lapse photography,
whereby cartoonists drew a caricature commenting on a news story or newsworthy
event in the style of a newspaper cartoon or a drawing from a humorous
magazine.
Between 1915 and 1922, nearly forty animated shorts were made in Denmark,
Norway, and Sweden. This period was the heyday of the silent Nordic animated
short film. Most of the filmmakers are unknown to international audiences
today, and their films gained only limited national distribution at the
time. The only Norwegian silent animated short which we know was screened
outside Norway is Fanden i nøtten (The Devil in the Nut,
1917), made by Ola Cornelius, which was well received in Stockholm and
Copenhagen. In Denmark, Robert Storm-Petersen was the best-known cartoonist.
"Storm P." had an international reputation by the late 1910s,
at least in the other Nordic countries, but as far as we know his animated
cartoons were not shown outside Denmark.
One Nordic animator achieved international success: the Swede, Victor
Bergdahl. Bergdahls animation debut, Trolldrycken (The Magic
Drink, 1915), was sold to eight countries outside Scandinavia, including
Brazil, and eight copies were sold to Russia. Bergdahls most famous
cartoon character was Kapten Grogg. The first Kapten Grogg film
was Kapten Groggs underbara resa (Captain Groggs Wonderful
Journey, 1916); thirty-five copies of it were sold outside Scandinavia,
including Latin America. Besides Russia, the German-speaking countries
in Europe seem to have been the most loyal Kapten Grogg audience
outside Scandinavia. A few copies were sent to England and the US, but
they were probably never distributed. This lack of success in the English-speaking
world may be one reason for Bergdahls lack of recognition in the
international history of animation, even though his films were among the
best in the field in the 1910s.
In the 1920s most of the animation made in Scandinavia was cinema
commercials. In the late 1920s four or five animation studios were making
advertising films in Oslo. The first Swedish cinema commercials were animated
films made by Arvid Olson, and both Victor Bergdahl and Storm P. made
several advertising films. Storm P. worked closely with De Danske Spritfabrikker
(The Danish Liquor Factories), while in Norway the biggest commissioner
of animated commercials was the tobacco company J.L. Tiedemann Tobaksfabrik.
This program includes films by all the leading figures of silent Nordic
animated film. Most of Bergdahls and Storm P.s shorts still
exist. This, then, is just a little taster. In addition, we have included
several advertising films which show that Nordic animators also worked
in other techniques than cut-outs and paper/cel cartoons. We have even
included a short pornographic film from the 1920s, Liten årsak,
stor virkning (Small Attack, Huge Response). This is shown in a Norwegian
version, but who made the film, and where, are still unknown.
More information about these films and artists can be found in my
article "Caricatures, Cartoons and Advertisements: The Pioneers of
Nordic Animated Films", in Nordic Explorations: Film Before 1930,
edited by John Fullerton and Jan Olsson, published by John Libbey and
released at the Giornate last year.
I would like to express my thanks to the staff at the archives of
the Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian film institutes, the National Library
of Norway in Mo i Rana, and director Jens Bing at the Storm P. museum
in Copenhagen, for their generous and encouraging help in the research
and preparation of this programme. Gunnar Strøm

SCHEDE FILM / FILM NOTES
KAPTEN GROGGS UNDERBARA RESA / [CAPTAIN GROGGS WONDERFUL JOURNEY
/ IL MERAVIGLIOSO VIAGGIO DEL CAPITANO GROGG] (AB Svenska Biografteatern,
S 1916)
Dir., anim.: Victor Bergdahl; 35mm?, 176m, 830" (18
fps), Sveriges Television. Didascalie in svedese / Swedish titles.
selvaggi, tempeste e affabili bricconi.

The first of the thirteen Kapten Grogg films Bergdahl
made between 1916 and 1922, this is a typical example of the series. The
Captain and his companion Kalle sail to foreign shores, encountering wild
animals, stormy weather, and friendly villains. Animated in Bergdahls
special technique, whereby he made his drawings on cards on which the
background was printed in advance. GS

GS

FANDEN I NØTTEN / [THE DEVIL IN THE NUT / IL DIAVOLO NELLA

Dir.: Ola Cornelius; prod.: Eyvin Ovrum; ph.: Hans
Berge; anim.: Cornelius, Ovrum, and Marie Walle; 35mm, 199ft.,
2 (24 fps), imbibizione / tinted, Norsk Filminstitutt / Nasjonalbiblioteket
i Rana. Senza didascalie / No titles.
GS
This was
the central piece of a 160-metre cartoon film made in 1917. The copy shown
was presented as an advertising film for Melange Margarine made in the
early 1920s. The 8-minute 1917 original was the first Norwegian cartoon
to have some success it was even screened abroad. It is based on
an old Norwegian folktale telling how the Devil hides himself inside a
nut. GS
DET NYE AAR? / [THE NEW YEAR? / LANNO NUOVO?] (Bio Film,
N 1921)
Dir., anim.: Sverre Halvorsen; prod., ph.: Ottar Gladtvet;
35mm, 50m, 225" (18 fps), Norsk Filminstitutt / Nasjonalbiblioteket
i Rana. Senza didascalie / No titles.
nuovo. Lanno vecchio anno è così descritto: "1921:
proibizionismo, conflitti linguistici, tasse, punizioni divine, inquisizione,
repressione". Oltre a pronunciarsi sulle scelte politiche attuate
GS
Using
pixillation and drawings Halvorsen sets up two situations before
and after New Year celebrations. The old year is described as "1921
Prohibition, Language, Taxes, Visitation, Inquisition, and Pressure".
As a comment on Norwegian taxes, language, and alcohol politics, the film
hopes for a better new year, with less pressure. GS
LITEN ÅRSAK, STOR VIRKNING / [SMALL ATTACK, HUGE RESPONSE /
PICCOLO ASSALTO, GROSSA REAZIONE] (?, N?, 1920s)
Dir.: ?; 35mm, 70m, 345" (16 fps), imbibizione / tinted,
Norsk Filminstitutt / Nasjonalbiblioteket i Rana. Didascalie in norvegese
/ Norwegian titles.
GS
A pornographic cartoon about a man being stung by a bee, with
unpleasant results. The titles are written in rhyme, and the language
in the titles, and the pictures, are both very direct. It is still a mystery
where the film was made, and by whom. GS
TROLLDRYCKEN / [THE MAGIC DRINK / LA BEVANDA MAGICA] (AB Svenska
Biografteatern, S 1915)
Dir., anim.: Victor Bergdahl; 35mm?, 76m, 340" (18 fps),
Sveriges Television. Didascale in svedese / Swedish titles.
GS
Victor Bergdahls first film was made using simple
drawings on paper. But it is still a very effective and touching story
about drinking habits and the dangers of alcoholism. This negative focus
on alcohol is very untypical of Bergdahls films. In the Grogg
films, alcohol keeps the Captain going. GS

1916)
Dir., anim.: Victor Bergdahl; 35mm?, 99m, 527" (18 fps),
Sveriges Television. Didascalie in svedese / Swedish titles.
In questi film lintreccio conta meno
GS
This is the last of three cartoons Bergdahl made about

metamorphoses and transformations. Here Pelle turns into a snake and starts
to eat objects. GS

Dir.: Ottar Gladtvet; 35mm, 50m, 243" (18 fps), Norsk
Filminstitutt / Nasjonalbiblioteket i Rana. Didascalie in norvegese /
Norwegian titles.
Schwartz in collaborazione con Eyvin Ovrum. GS

2 (22 fps), Norsk Filminstitutt / Nasjonalbiblioteket i Rana. Didascalie
norvegesi in rima / Norwegian rhyming titles.
Aveva appreso i principi fondamentali

GS
An advertising film for Tiedemanns

The quality of both animation and storytelling in this film is superior

early 1927 and the style of animation resembles advertising films
Bergdahl did at the time. GS

Dir., anim.: Storm P.; ph.: Karl Wieghorst; 35mm, 173m,
820" (18 fps), Danish Film Institute / Film Archive. Didascalie
in danese / Danish titles.

breaks open in front of the Three Small Men. The lost hat emerges from
the egg. This was the last animated cartoon Storm P. made with his enthusiasm
for the medium still intact, and his storytelling is here at its best.
