Since its creation just thirty years ago,
has collected more than 100,000 films, ranging from the first Lumière
films to the most recent productions, which are added to the collections
thanks to the system of legal deposit. Every type of feature-length
and short film is represented: fiction, documentary, advertising films,
experimental works. Almost 10,000 titles, of every genre, have been
conserved in the framework of the Plan for the Safeguarding and Restoration
of old films.
The work accomplished in terms of identification and restoration of
films by the Archives du Film du Centre National de la Cinématographie
serves to demonstrate to the full all the richness and diversity of
the world cinema heritage. The estimation and placing in context of
the restored films, grouped by genres, authors and themes, results in
a growing demand for their use and is particularly appreciated in the
presentation of retrospectives and festivals, both national and international.

FILM / FILM NOTES
The films shown in this tribute to the Centre National de la Cinématographie
focus on a rare and unexpected corner of the vast holdings of the Archives
du Film - a selection of long-disregarded Hollywood "programme
pictures", often made by up-and-coming directors who used them
to develop their skills and sometimest explore subjects that might not
have found favour for more expensive productions. In addition we are
showing a brief restored rarity from the French film heritage, Edouard
Emile Violets La Main.

"Unabile
produzione, talmente abile, che nessuno potrà accusarla dimmoralità,
oscenità o volgarità" (Variety, 7.7.1916).

The film was remarkable in its day for its daring display of nudity.
Encouraged by its notoriety, Mutual set a price of $100 a day on rentals;
and Variety said that "it is one of those features that will advertise
itself after the first showing and the announcement of the last screening
should necessitate the calling out of the police reserves to keep the
crowds from breaking down the doors of the theatre in their efforts
to see it". The film sets out to exploit the charms of Audrey Munson,
the model who had posed for all the female nude statuary at the Panama-Pacific
Exposition; and to quote Variety again, "she walks before
the camera about every three hundred feet clad mostly in a smile
[giving] an audience about eighteen good peeks at the girl". The
price of such pleasures is a high-flown allegorical tale justifying
the purity of undress, along with a melodrama story of a virtuous young
woman who poses for an artist in order to earn money to publish the
work of a neglected young poet (Nigel de Brullier). The poet, unaware
that it has all been done for his sake, at first spurns her on learning
of her self-exposure; but repents and recognises that to the pure all
things are pure. "It is cleverly produced, so cleverly in fact
that none can point a finger at it and declaim it as immoral, suggestive
or salacious" (Variety, 7.7.1916). -DR
RIDIN WILD (Robert J. Horner Productions, Aywon Film Corp,

mio albergo."
seguente: "Non abbiamo trovato alcun dato sullesatta natura
di questo film." -DR
A spry but run-of-the-mill programme western, with the young Kit Carson
in an early appearance, this film has two points of curiosity. It was
shot in Tucson, Arizona and the climactic scene is shot at the actual
Tucson Rodeo at that time evidently a remarkably informal and
unpretensious event. The film also reveals attitudes of the period towards
pulmonary tuberculosis. The hero is one of the east-coast victims of
"the white plague" who go west in the hope of improving their
health. In Tucson however he founds himself unceremoniously ejected
from a hotel: "I cant keep lungers [sic] in my hotel".
The disease is also referred to as "the Con". The film eluded
the compilers of the American Film Institute Catalogue, who comment
only that "No information about the precise nature of this film
has been found." -DR

Grazie a didascalie
a double entendre, a brillanti qui pro quo (il caffé si sparge
spesso e volentieri sui pantaloni dellimbarazzato Nagel), a costumi,
-LC
Anticipating Cukors Adams Rib, this smart adaptation
of a stage comedy stars Norma Shearer, in top form, as a criminal lawyer
and Conrad Nagel as a district attorney with whom she is sparring both
professionally and amorously. With witty intertitles, brilliant innendoes
(a lot of business over coffee spilt over the embarrassed Nagels
trousers) and de luxe MGM wardrobe, sets and camerawork, this is a worthy
but neglected screwball harbinger. -LC
THE ROAD TO RUIN (Broughton Productions, US 1928)

ribella". Kevin Brownlow nel suo Behind the Mask of Innocence
2.500.000. -LC
The French title, Les Esclaves du vice suits this moralistic
prohibition pamphlet about teenage deliquency better. It shows the lurid
effects of alcohol abuse and free sex. With lots of scenes of vice-strip
poker, speakeasies, brothels, not to speak of the climactic scene in
which a father gets paired off with his own daughter in a bawdy house.
It is a B-picture indeed, but very well done; and the print is pristine
(a rare feature for the B-domain, as we all know). "La jeunesse
moderne", declares an early sub-title in this French release version,
Kevin Brownlow
devotes two pages of his book Behind the Mask of Innocence to
this "cheap exploitation picture" that cost a mere $ 2,500
and grossed more than $ 2,500,000. -LC
WEBS OF STEEL (Morris R. Schlank Productions, US 1925)

in inglese / English titles.
Unaltra rarità sulla quale i compilatori dellAmerican
Film Institute Catalogue avevano dichiarato forfait: "Non abbiamo
Union Pacific in genere. Un vagabondo riformato viene coinvolto in una
complessa, affascinante "rete dacciaio" ferroviaria.
senza ricorso a effetti speciali.
-LC
Another rarity that eluded the compilers of the American Film Institute
Catalogue, who noted, "No information about the precise nature
of this film has been found." It proves unmissable for lovers of
The General and Union Pacific at large. A hobo endeavouring to
reform becomes involved in the complex, absorbing "webs of steel"
that are the railways. The dangerous stunts are staged without special
effects, Keaton style. It is unusual to enjoy a B-action movie of the
20s in such a perfect state of preservation. -LC
