First part of a retrospective of silents made by the Fox Film
Corporation, which will include not only masterpieces from the company's
star directors - John Ford, Raoul Walsh, Frank Borzage, F.W. Murnau,
Alan Dwan, Howard Hawks - but also reveal how forgotten journeymen like
John G. Blystone and Irving Cummings were on occasion capable of producing
outstanding work. Nor will we neglect Fox's stars: the company invented
the Vamp in the person of Theda Bara; later luminaries included Mary
Astor and Dolores Del Rio, the western idol Tom Mix and Buck Jones and
the ideal romantic team of Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell.
A special feature of the Fox presentation will be screenings of the
surviving silent films which were supplied with synchronised Movietone
musical sound tracks in the first days of sound, 1927-29. Traditionally
these have been ignored by historians and archivists, offended by the
different musical tastes of the twenties, or dismissed as a "hasty"
industry compromised with the new technology. In the past, festivals
(Pordenone included) have even suppressed the authentic music to provide
new accompaniments of their own. This year's Pordenone presentation
will demonstrate that these accompaniments were in fact prepared and
recorded with great care and cost, and represent the best evidence we
have today of the musical provision in the silent cinema.
This concession to "mechanical" music does not mean we shall
be dispensing with our well-loved team of regular musicians, who will
provide piano accompaniments for the rest of the 100 hours of film which
Pordenone offers during its eight days.
